In addition to the lagoon, Bacalar also boasts a rich history. Fort San Felipe Bacalar, built in 1733 by Capitán Alonso de Figueroa y Silva to defend against pirates from the southeastern side of the canal, features a museum that offers a fascinating insight into the history of the indigenous inhabitants as well as the French, English, Dutch, and Scots—who, as conquerors or pirates, repeatedly attacked the lagoon city. All locations in downtown Bacalar and near the lagoon are easily accessible on foot or by bike. The city center features a traffic-calmed zone where you can ride your bike undisturbed.
Bacalar has numerous Mexican restaurants and street stalls serving delicious food at reasonable prices. In the immediate vicinity is “Los Rapidos de Bacalar,” a recreational area where you can float along the beautiful blue river current and view the estromatolites from a distance. The estromatolites are among the oldest living organisms (“rocks” with microorganisms on their surface), dating back several million years. Along with the mangroves, they help produce oxygen and sequester CO2, thereby contributing to the area’s stunning flora and fauna. In addition, the lagoon has other relatively unspoiled spots, such as Sac-Ha or Laguna Bonanza, which are perfect places for barbecuing, swimming, or relaxing.
About 35 km from Bacalar lies the capital of Quintana Roo, Chetumal. It has an airport from which you can easily travel to several cities in Mexico and the U.S. By bus (from Bacalar) or rental car, you can easily reach other historic sites and recreational areas such as Akumal (Turtle Beach), Cancun, Chichen Itza, Coba, Cozumel, Isla Mujeres, Merida, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, or Valladolid, as well as dozens of impressive underwater caves (cenotes).
Let yourself be enchanted by the Lagoon of Seven Colors—spend an unforgettable vacation in southern Mexico!
