The Baltic Sea island of Usedom—“Here one finds peace and fresh air, and these two things work like miracles, filling one’s nerves, blood, and lungs with a quiet bliss.” Theodor Fontane wrote these lines to his wife Emilie in 1863 while on Usedom. With an average of about 2,000 hours of sunshine per year, Germany’s second-largest island is one of the sunniest vacation destinations in Europe. Forty kilometers of the finest sandy beaches, numerous biking and hiking trails, and idyllic fishing villages round out the vacation experience.
