Above the clouds, on the slopes of Mauna Loa the Lava Bus has come to rest on the Lava Land Homestead. 100% Off-Grid, this former tour bus will delight adventurous travellers looking to experience the star-gazing and "other-wordly" experiences of upper Ocean View. Coffee Lovers will enjoy grinding their own Ka'u coffee, perfect with local honey to sip at sunrise. Have a BBQ or small fire to stay warm while you enjoy the epic sunsets.
The space:
The bus features a memory foam mattress with
high quality sheets and blankets, a dining table, chess board table, loveseat and kitchenette. We include Hawaiian coffee and local honey along with fresh eggs from our chickens when available.
the bed is full-sized and there is a 2" floor sleeping mat with sleeping bag and pillow.foe children or an additional guest.
The bus has a hot water shower with fresh towels and wash clothes and a compost toilet. We service the toilet every other day.
Life on the volcano is always an adventure and the weather can add to the excitement, bring a few warm clothes and sturdy shoes.
Please note: This is a remote location, some cell phones may struggle to get service. WIFI may be available, please ask. Lava can be difficult to walk on; this adventure is not recommended for people with limited mobility.
Guest access
You are invited to walk around the homestead gardens or explore the 2+ acres of lava, but watch out, there are many immature plants! Our property is very young so many areas are still being developed.
Toss your leftovers to the chickens, Turkeys like fresh greens and rabbits too- plus carrots or fruits and veggies!
Roosters like to welcome the day around 6 am. There is sometimes barking dogs and other agricultural noises though usually very quiet at night.
Other things to note:
You do NOT need a 4x4 vehicle. The road is paved the the way.

Check-in was easy, Luca was very nice and gave a tour of the off-grid homestead. The owner was very nice. The bus itself was as described. It is very close to the road, with a very close neighbor, but also quiet at night. Staying on a lava field is very unique. Our only issue was some pests, so promptly had to remove our things for the evening (only a 1-night stay). Pests are not unheard of on BI.

The bed was amazingly comfortable, especially after a long flight. This was our first stay in our trip and it was just for the night. Our main complaint was there was no hot water, like not even luke warm it was just cold. We weren't there very long so we did not message the host to see if it could be fixed we just took cold showers and went to bed. They had several amenities, and the experience was amazing. There was a really good coffee shop not to far away.

This entire experience was nothing short of amazing. At first I was apprehensive to live completely off the grid but after staying here I would definitely do it again. When we first arrived the host met us, gave us an entire tour of his property, including his beautiful animals as well as explaining what it’s like to live off grid. Made us feel right at home as if we had been friends a long time. The home was cozy, it does get a little cold so be prepared. The grill and fire pit was a nice touch in the evening. We only stayed one night and wish we had stayed longer.

Magnificent accommodation with everything you need. Sleeping in an old bus, and on top of that, on a lava field, was an amazing experience.The host was very responsive and the cleanliness was impeccable.
