During the 19th century, reading rooms were once commonplace across much of rural Yorkshire: they were places to congregate, educate, debate and elucidate in a time long before mass media and 24 hour news. Practically every Dales hamlet had one, and this charming building was Oughtershaw's: located right opposite the village school, it was patronised by philanthropic Wood family, who owned nearby Oughtershaw Hall.
Today, the building retains all the period charm you could ask for. Topped by York stone roof tiles, surrounded by trimmed lawns and bordered by a tinkling book, it looks like it could have stumbled straight from the pages of All Creatures Great And Small. For those who have previously stayed at Oughtershaw Hall, it also makes an ideal village getaway if you're returning as part of a smaller group.
One well-behaved dog aged one and over is welcome.
Location-wise, you're in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales here, surrounded by green fields, hills and drystone walls: blissful isolation, and superb walking country. But if you do feel like being social, there are several renowned pubs within driving distance, and the market town of Hawes, 6 miles to the north, is on hand for supplies.

The Reading Rooms is yet another perfect property by Catch the Breeze. As you would expect the standard and the finish of the property was excellent. Two very comfortable spacious bedrooms left no-one thinking they had the small room. Good sized shower rooms with large heated towel rails for that extra bit of luxury. The layout downstairs was perfect with two lovely sitting areas (loads of room for everyone to sit comfortably) separated by the kitchen/diner with everything you could possibly need for eating in.
Outside the river at the bottom of the garden was a real treat with lots of birds and livestock in the neighbouring fields.
Lots of walking from the doorstep and very close by. The property was very rural and car journeys are very slow which may not suit everyone - no popping back to the shop if you forget something!
All in all a fantastic stay and the Catch the Breeze team on hand if needed.

The Reading Rooms were spacious, comfortable, clean and superbly equiped. We like to cook all our own meals and the kitchen had everything we needed. It even had a lemon zester. The setting was lovely and sitting out in the garden enjoying the stream and birds was so peaceful.

The Reading Rooms is a truly exceptional place to stay. Set in an idyllic location, it offers the perfect opportunity to completely relax and unwind. From the moment you arrive, you find yourself thinking, “I could live here.”
The house is equipped to an excellent standard, with high-quality furnishings and thoughtful touches throughout. Every room has been beautifully presented, creating a welcoming and luxurious atmosphere that immediately makes you feel at home.
The peaceful setting, combined with the comfort and attention to detail, makes The Reading Rooms a wonderful retreat. Whether you’re looking for a quiet getaway or simply a place to recharge, this property delivers on every level. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would not hesitate to return.

We had the most wonderful stay at The Reading Rooms in the Yorkshire Dales. From the moment we arrived, it was clear how much care and attention has gone into the place – it’s absolutely immaculate, with an outstanding finish throughout.
Everything you could possibly need is provided, making it feel like a true home from home, just with much better views! The location is beautifully remote, perfect for switching off and unwinding, with serene countryside all around. Waking up to the sight of sheep and lambs grazing nearby was such a lovely touch and really added to the whole experience.
We also made the most of the local area, including a visit to Hawes and the Wensleydale Creamery, which is a must. A Sunday lunch at The White Hart Inn was another highlight – highly recommended and the perfect way to round off the weekend.
If you’re looking for a peaceful, high-quality escape in a stunning setting, The reading rooms from Catch the Breeze is hard to beat, like all their properties We’ll definitely be back.
