Fort William is known as the ’outdoor capital’, and is home to the World Mountain Bike Championships, Excellent climbing, skiing, snowboarding, mountain biking and walking are popular outdoor pursuits. Golf fishing, kayaking and sailing are also available nearby. The area is famous for its breath-taking scenery, used as a backdrop in many film, including Braveheart, Rob Roy and the Harry Potter movies. Many of the islands including Skye, Mull and Iona can be reached by short ferry crossings and the steam train to Mallaig makes for a great day out. Wildlife is abundant with golden eagles, porpoises, red deer, otters and pine martens often spotted. There are many historic castles, monuments, sandy beaches, gardens and museums to explore.
