The town was named after a pile of stones were taken the River Trents and used as gravestones for the two princes Ruffin and Wilfad. The church was built over these stones in 670 and lasted until the 9th century before being destroyed by invading Danes. Stone's reputation for excellent food & drink is cemented by the monthly Farmers' Market and the annual Autumn Food & Drink Festival.
