Ruffner Mountain Retreat: Explore Alabama’s Wild Side
Alabama is a hidden gem for biodiversity, ranking highest in freshwater diversity in North America and featuring the second-largest river delta. Its rich ecosystems are reflected in our unique home design!
Each room highlights Alabama's ecological diversity: The main living area has a woodland theme inspired by nearby Ruffner Mountain. Murals of a scarlet tanager and tulip poplar create a forest atmosphere. The Wetland bedroom features an abstract mural complete with herons and prothonotary warblers. See if you can find the secret passageway to the Black Belt Prairie room! The Longleaf Pine Master Suite showcases endangered species like the red-cockaded woodpecker, indigo snake, and gopher tortoise. The River Delta bedroom captures the essence of winding waterways, while the River Bottom entertainment room features unique river rock art.
A river-themed hallway ties these ecosystems together, making the home feel like a living gallery of Alabama’s landscapes.
Ideal for families, groups, or couples, this retreat offers a memorable, immersive experience. Explore secret passages, enjoy local murals, and embrace the natural beauty of Alabama while relaxing or adventuring in the outdoors.

All of us - two elderly couples - loved our stay. Carter was very welcoming, plus easy to communicate with and very accessible. The lovely nature- based decorating was so artfully done and delightful. The house was clean, the beds were comfortable and the nicely remodeled house felt homey. It is a neiborhood in transition, but we never felt unsafe. If you don't need "fancy", and appreciate a celebration of the natural world, we highly recommend staying at Mountain Hideaway.

We had a griffins with Carter as a careful and responsive host. The cottage is a great location and we loved the artwork.
