The Cistercian Priory, which gave the village its peculiar name in the 12th century, is now reduced to a single stone pillar, a stairway, and a sundial. The village green is surrounded by charming stone-built houses, shops, tearooms, two former coaching inns, and a glass studio that was recently featured in an episode of the BBC's "Countryfile" show. Although Rosedale Abbey features a 9-hole golf course, there are several other top-notch courses nearby for golf fans. A excellent selection of services, including eateries, boutiques, and marketplaces, can be found in the busy market towns of Kirkbymoorside, Pickering, and Helmsley. The abbeys at Rievaulx and Byland are also well worth a visit.
