According to the Rimouski Heritage Society, between 1870 and 1900, the population of Rimouski was concentrated in the Saint-Germain district, around the cathedral. The streets that run through the downtown core today were mostly opened between 1898 and 1907. In the first half of the twentieth century, several important buildings were built, including City Hall, the Bishop's Palace, St. Joseph's Hospital and the Fifth Seminary (now the Cégep).
