ViVa! Santorini

This is a brand-new, clean, and spacious hostel that isn't overcrowded — an excellent accommodation option for travellers who don't want to spend a fortune while vacationing on Santorini. Vaki, the wonderfully friendly and charming owner, will walk you through the ins and outs of your stay, offering helpful tips and advice (thank you for the dinner I shared with Christo and Maria, the hostel staff, and the guests). The hostel is located right next to the bus terminus where local buses on the Fira–Perissa route arrive and depart. The beach is just a stone's throw away; the area is full of small shops, bars, eateries, etc. Personally, I see it as a hostel’s plus that there is an option for dorms not only for women but also for men — a rarity in Europe. The dorm is quite spacious (accommodating up to 12 people, though the third tier of the bunk beds wasn't in use — it was the end of the season) and features a kitchenette with a fridge, lockers, and a shower with a toilet. Two towels (sic!) are included in the price of the stay. Don't worry if the bathroom happens to be occupied: there is a designated area in the yard with four additional toilets and showers — feel free to use them, especially in the morning or late at night, so as not to disturb your roommates. A nice touch is the "Feel free to use" option: a shelf with food and a bag of toiletries left by other guests for everyone to share.

There is air conditioning in the room, but it’s very weak; if necessary, open the door and crack the window to air it out. Remember that the water on the island is salty, even from the tap; for cooking, buy a pack of regular drinking water at the supermarket.

Everything! Vaki is an amazing host, and you can tell that she genuinely cares about the place and the people that stay in her hostel. She’s a seasoned traveller, so her experience staying abroad in hostels is reflected in how she’s set the place up. The bedrooms are clean and tidy, and comfortable. Each bed has a curtain, wall power point, and a phone holder. Each room also has a kitchenette and fridge, which is really handy. The kitchen has everything you could possibly need to cook a meal, you might even find some food on the ‘free shelf’ — otherwise there are supermarkets a short walk away. The hostel is in the perfect location, too. It’s right by the bus stop to get to Fira, and right around the corner from the beautiful beach. There’s also plenty of food joints and shops around to peruse. I seriously cannot recommend this hostel enough. I miss it and Perissa, and really really hope to be back again one day. Thank you Vaki!
