For a culinary treat, head into Grasmere (4 miles) to sample its world-famous gingerbread. While you're there, explore Dove Cottage, where the poet William Wordsworth once lived.

Pull up in your private parking area (there's room for two cars) and store your outdoor gear in the entrance porch. Step inside your cottage and you'll be greeted by a spacious open-plan lounge/diner that's bathed in natural light from expansive windows that frame the beautiful country views.
