🏰 Must-See Attractions (within 15 minutes)
The Château de Pau (National Museum): Located just 10 minutes away, this is the region’s iconic landmark. This is where Henry IV was born. You can tour the royal apartments, admire a unique collection of tapestries, and stroll through its 22-hectare park and gardens with views of the Pyrenees.
The Jurançon Wine Châteaux: Along the wine route, some estates proudly bear the name “Château” and combine heritage with wine testings:
Château Jolys (Artiguelouve): A magnificent estate with superb views of the hillsides.
Château Lafitte (Monein): An organic estate featuring traditional architecture and a modern winery open to visitors.
🛡️ Medieval Fortresses and Gardens (less than 45 min away)
Château de Morlanne: A brick-and-stone fortress built by Gaston Fébus in the 14th century. The site has been beautifully restored and features gardens open to the public with an exceptional panoramic view.
Château de Viven: Best known for its “Remarkable Gardens.” It’s a perfect idyllic stop for lovers of roses and French-style gardens.
Montaner Castle: Located on the border between Béarn and Bigorre, this castle features an impressive 40-meter-high keep offering a 360° view of the Pyrenees mountain range.
🌊 Getaway to the Ocean (1 hour away – Basque Coast)
If you’re taking advantage of your proximity to the coast (a 1-hour drive), don’t miss:
Château d’Abbadia (Hendaye): A neo-Gothic observatory castle built by Viollet-le-Duc on the cliffs. It’s a magical place, blending science and architecture, overlooking the Atlantic.
Urtubie Castle (Urrugne): A 14th-century fortified castle, still inhabited by the same family, surrounded by a 6-hectare park.
Host’s Tip: For the Château de Pau, I recommend visiting at the end of the day to enjoy the golden light on the Boulevard des Pyrénées right after your tour!

Here are the most popular and iconic hikes, organized by area:

🏔️ In the Ossau Valley (the closest to Pau)
The Ayous Lakes Loop: This is THE star hike of the Béarn region. It offers the most famous “postcard-perfect” view in the Pyrenees: the reflection of the Pic du Midi d’Ossau in the waters of Lake Gentau.
Starting point: Lake Bious-Artigues (the parking lot fills up very quickly in summer).
The Artouste Train: Ideal for those who want the view without the extreme effort. It’s the highest narrow-gauge train in Europe. After the ride, a short walk takes you to Lake Artouste.
The Cirque d’Anéou: At the foot of the Col du Pourtalet (Spanish border). Very accessible and popular with families who come to see marmots and herds roaming freely.
🦅 In the Aspe Valley
The Chemin de la Mâture: A spectacular and impressive trail, literally carved into the cliff face high above the abyss (once used to transport masts for the King’s ships).
Lac du Montagnon (heart-shaped): Has become extremely popular thanks to social media. Be warned: this is a more challenging hike (significant elevation gain).
The Cirque de Lescun: Nicknamed the “Dolomites of the Pyrenees.” Hikes around the village or toward Lac de L’hurs offer spectacular alpine views.
🌊 A little further away (Hautes-Pyrénées—about 1 hour 15 minutes)
The Cirque de Gavarnie: An UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is the most visited site in the French Pyrenees, featuring a monumental waterfall (one of the highest in Europe). The trail is wide and accessible to everyone.
Lake Gaube and the Pont d’Espagne: Located above Cauterets, this is a stunning site that’s very easy to reach (chairlift option available).
💡 Practical tips for your travelers:
Arrive early: At sites like Bious-Artigues or Gavarnie, the parking lots fill up by 9 a.m. in July and August.
The `MaRando` or `Visorando` apps: Very useful for getting precise GPS routes for these trails.
Equipment: Even for “tourist” trails, good hiking shoes and water are essential, as the weather changes quickly in the mountains.
Hello, please bring your own towels and bed linens for your stay.
Please leave the apartment as clean as it was upon your arrival and return the keys to the box.
Dishes must be washed and put away.
Please empty the trash before you leave; the recycling bins are located in the parking lot: the yellow bin is for plastic and packaging, the green bin is for trash bags, and the brown bin is for compost. You are responsible for disposing of glass yourself.
I do not charge a cleaning fee; however, you will be billed if you fail to comply with the house rules:
Minor mess (dishes, trash) €15–€30
Significant mess (very dirty floors, bathroom) €40–€70
Textile cleaning (wine/food stains) €50 - 100 €
Smoking / Pets (if prohibited) 100 €.

Have a great stay and have fun!
