The location is wonderful, makes for a thoroughly relaxing stay. The staff are helpful and always polite. The site and building itself is absolutely stunning which is the reason I never want to stay elsewhere.

The downstairs areas are beautifully laid out as are key areas on the 2nd floor e.g. the library and music room. But some of the guest bedrooms are still disappointingly appointed for the price. Year after year there are badly stained carpets or signs of iron burns, poorly performing small cramped showers, traditional sash windows that don’t open properly, which all together combine to provide a tired, jaded and somewhat misleading dilapidated appearance which is not a true representation of how the property deserves to look. The microscopic provided flat screens don’t exactly add any real ambience to this in my opinion.

Such fun staying in this castle which was clean and luxurious. Recommended for those with a hire car although proximity to Railway is good too. Loved the gardens and walks in the woods. Excellent breakfast to set us up for a day of sightseeing in Edinburgh and surrounds.

More variety on the menu

The common areas were lovely, furnished with antique furniture. The property overall was charming, and the gardens were vast and beautiful.

The room we were given on the first night was very small and not particularly clean, with insects present because the window had apparently been left open. The spring mattress was old and uncomfortable, and kept sliding off the base. The hairdryer was stored on the floor of the closet. The next morning we noticed a stain, likely mold, under the mattress, and asked to change rooms. The new room was slightly bigger and had clean sheets, but it still wasn't well maintained — for example, the hairdryer was partly melted. Overall, the rooms don't live up to a 4-star standard or the price paid.
