The Bell Hotel, Saxmundham

Lovely room above the pub. Clean, spacious and quiet with a large comfortable bed and good bathroom - looked like it has recently been refurbished. All very nice! I arrived after dinner and left early so didn't have breakfast but did enjoy a pint in the bar when I arrived and where there were lots of people still eating, so I'm guessing the food was good!

Crack in window pane ; a curtain could not be drawn ; the lock on the en-suite sliding door somehow locked us out . A little bit pricey for the standard .

Food at dinner the first night was nice (we ate elsewhere on the second night); breakfast, when it finally arrived (first day) was good, although quite a few items had run out and did not get refilled/replenished. The very few staff who were there tried hard but were not efficient. Breakfast on second morning was fine. Room was pleasant but very small.

Not sufficient staff to look after guests; on our first morning some guests had to wait half an hour to get a table for breakfast; the first morning at breakfast was bad: very long waits, food ran out without being replenished (pastries and juices and toast) inefficient service; we had to ask for a strainer for our leaf tea. Generally not sufficient staff around for anything during our two-day stay; quite often we had to search for somebody when we needed something. After the first night and during the day before our second night our room was not made up properly: the bed was made, used glasses and cups were taken away - however, no new glasses, no new cups and no new tea bags were left in the room. I had to go and fetch them from the bar. The bathroom was not 100% clean (on arrival), i.e. the tiles over the sink had not been cleaned, the soap bottle and holder had not been cleaned in a while and were very sticky. The soap dispenser in the shower was empty, which we only found out when we wanted to use it the first morning in the shower. I left it empty on display but our bathroom was not cleaned after our first night, either; soap was still empty and toilet had not been cleaned at all, which is bad news when the bathroom does not contain a loo brush, either! I had to go to the bar again (the bar was on the ground floor, our room on the second floor) to ask for more soap for the shower, which was left in front of our door, very nicely, but turned out to be hair conditioner when we tried to use it the next morning. While we were at the hotel we noted a couple of other guests complaining while checking out (they even got a discount on their bill), and when we checked out on the second morning an American couple walked in who had had a room at the hotel the previous night, told staff they were attending a wedding, so might be late, but then got locked out at night and had to spend the night in their car.
