excellent breakfast and perfect location, slightly off the crowded touristy bit and yet super close to all the shrines

Was a little further from the main town than I realised, but some may prefer that!

How do I summarize this bizarre experience? We were greeted by a loud and eccentric woman whose tone was consistently brusque and insincere throughout our stay. We were upsold without our consent. We weren't given the option not to have dinner there on our second night, which was confusingly communicated as "included," but we were charged an additional ¥7000 each--and unfortunately the dinner was long-winded and desperately fussy. This is also not a ryokan, although it is listed on Booking as one. It's a modern Japanese hotel.
