Breakfast was excellent with a variety of items to choose from. The hotel staff were all very helpful and incredibly nice. We SO appreciated Roger's help in connecting us with Alex, a driver who took us on a few excursions! Outstanding!
These are things that cannot be changed but I would have appreciated knowing ahead of time to prepare:
1. Toilets are very low to the ground so those of us with bad knees/hips, be careful. :)
2. The stairs are all wooden and if your room is located next to stairs or the cleaning closet (also wooden), you will be woken up by those traveling up and down the stairs or opening cleaning closet doors. Not a huge issue, but if you're trying to nap or sleep in, you may need ear plugs.

they were about to cancel our booking on the same day because of maintenance… but we insisted and managed to keep our room there

Everything, the Architecture, the rooms especially 212. public spaces all in typically Spanish/Moorish tradition. Staff could not be more helpful. Brilliant value for money.
This Hotel would be one my favourite places to stay whenever it was. However, in Ecuador it stands out as the competition does not offer this level of comfort for style at this price level

very clean and safe place. Central location. Very friendly front desk and service.
Basically no rooms with windows connected to some fresh air. Even with 10°C outside we had to run the AC all night. So called balcony all go to the inside, a roofed atrium. Needless to say, no fresh air here either. Also from here, you look down at the restaurant. While it's a nice look it's not practical at all. You have noise and smells from the restaurant coming up, going straight into the room, even with doors closed. Walls and doors, in addition, are very thin, so you basically can hear everything. If it says 2 beds and a couch in the description, that is not true. There won't be a couch. They say if there are two beds then there is no couch even if they list the room with two beds and a couch on booking.com.
In our case the AC was mounted in a way, so that the remote did not work unless you just stand right in front of it. No chance to control it from any of the beds. The wifi was very weak and there was no connection in the upper floor and bathroom. Lower floor had connection but the signal was very weak and not what I would expect. The bathroom, as well as anything else had no windows and a barely working yet very loud ventilation which was also connected to the light. So entering the bathroom you had to turn on everything. Annoying at night because of the noise and also not very energy efficient. Water pressure was ok but warm water temperature was very unstable, leading to some boiling water suddenly bursting out. Be careful.
We only tried the breakfast once, because honestly it was rather underwhelming and very expensive. Expensive seems to be the trend here. The price they ask for is not worth what you will get. Given the fact that they advertise with pictures, that are presumably from the one room with window access to the outside, is more than just a little misleading. They are also listed as a 5 Star hotel on booking.com which, even for Ecuadorian standards is simply not true.

Everything. Firstly, the staff were so friendly and always smiling. Secondly the breakfast was excellent and lastly the authentic feel of the courtyards and colonial and indigenous culture/art.

My husband and I loved that this hotel was only a few blocks from the Plaza Grande of old town. We enjoyed coffee in the plaza, walked to tourist sites, and checked out traditional handicraft stores - all within a mile on foot. The numerous pedestrianize streets in the vicinity made strolling along people-watching quite enjoyable.
I especially want to compliment Gabriela, one of the day time receptionists for Patio Andaluz, for her unfailingly pleasant assistance. She was also the one who answered questions via email for me ahead of time. Her written and spoken English are excellent and her manner is most gracious.
Our duplex room was quite large with the sleeping area and bathroom in a loft. The downstairs sitting area was comfortable. Sitting areas in other parts of the hotel were also pleasant for visiting with friends. (We met friends at the hotel prior to departing for the Galapagos.)
The restaurant seemed over-priced. We walked to nearby restaurants including an outstanding one called the Theatrum that offered a more varied selection of wines than most anywhere else in the old town.
The internet worked perfectly well but it was difficult to reach plugs hidden behind furniture. In general the wiring was old. I should mention that the building is around 500 years old so the ambiance is “historical” in both a mostly good way. It has not been overly modernized.
The night receptionist who checked us in at 12:30 am was glum. We were tired and he did not offer much in the way of welcome.
