The pictures on booking.com are very misleading and must be from when the hotel just opened. Current outer appearance is very dilapidated. It looks almost abandoned. The room rates are too high compared to much more modern hotels next door. I would rather recommend Nautilus which had lower room rates and much more modern, spacious rooms and had activities to do.
The rooms smell like damp, so do the towels, the aircons didn't work properly and had mould on the outer unit, the bathrooms drain was blocked and flooded the entire bathroom. They changed our rooms the next bungalow to do room maintenance but the smell remained.
The food was priced similar to most areas in Zanzibar, the taste was good with a very broad menu. Breakfast was good and changed daily.
The staff were very friendly and attentive, catering to your needs, however we were the only guests at the hotel.
The beach area is extremely quiet in low season, not much going on around. If you are looking for a very quiet atmosphere with no resort activity, this might be a good choice, if you need more avtivity, I do not recommend. We left on day 2 of 5 days because it was just too quiet, the hotel would also not accomodate date changes and blamed booking.com for removing their listing on the site, which was done after we had already booked

You can't beat this hotel for value. For a reasonable price, we had a beach bungalow located directly on the beach. The staff was very helpful, the restaurant was good and they had a very nice breakfast every morning.
My only complaint is the shower. It took a long time to warm up and there wasn't enough water pressure. Totally worth the tradeoff though for the location of the room.

The facilities and location were great. The staff were extremely friendly. The pools were brilliant for the kids. The breakfast was really nice and dinner was nice as well.
The villa is not suitable for staying with small children. The banisters were too wide and the stairs are dangerous when wet. We could have done with a pair of curtains upstairs that were not see through. But the good things outweighs those.

The pictures on booking.com and the reality is quite far apart.

I did actually live in the Deluxe Double Room with Balcony and Sea View (friends got the bungalow) - and it was fantastic. Nice big balcony with a view to the pool, coconut palms and ocean.. ..and the warm comfortable ocean wind. Room was big enough with a huge comfortable bed and the bathroom was also roomy enough with both shower corner and bath.
The breakfast had big enough choice of fruits, pancakes and cakes and staff asked how would you like your egg. And the restaurant had a nice sea view, too... ..and crabs sometimes walking on the floor.
The cook was good, so the dinner was very tasty. And the administrator (a kind Italian guy) was very friendly, smiling and helpful - and also all the other staff was very friendly.
Well.. ..just a small hint - if you arrive very early then it is the low tide time and the beach may look patchily ugly, dirty and low.. ..but it will change fast, no worries. Administrator will say that and it is true. The only possible downside of this property is the relatively big distance to the islands capital and most of the bigger tourist attractions. Also the electricity and water may very often go missing on Zanzibar and the hotel will have a generator for such times. But you can never fully count having on the electricity or water in the early morning if planning any early activities.

Pieceful stay in Uroa, next to the beach.
If you would like to enjoy nice sunrise, quiet life of Zanzibar, go for this family hotel.
Superfriendly staff members, gorgeous garden, swimming pool. Ismail will always surprice you with fresh fruits or coconut: such a big help!
Delicious varied breakfast, just high recommended. Wish to come back again!

Personel was very friendly! Garden and view look very nice, pool is refreshing. Poolbeds are good, nice they provide bathing towels.
Family room and bathroom were far below acceptable standard. Regular (=daily) issues with electricity and/or water. No water at all (in the middle of a shower), cold water only...
Restaurant was expensive given the simple dishes served (pictures on booking not at all representative). Restaurant personel very friendly, yet not capable: very slow, incorrect servings (boiled iso scrambled eggs), drinks (cola!) not available and so on. Breakfast of very low level. No free drinking water.
All in all, after a few days we were glad to leave this place.
All in all a disappointing experience.

The staff were really kind and helpful it felt like home, not crowded and its a beach front hotel. The area is secluded and far from town therefore very private and good for relaxing.
The bathrooms could be modernized to look and function better, the kitchen at the restaurant as well needs an upgrade and more neatness.

Nice cool swimming pool but need to be cleaned regularly
We stayed at Moonshine Uroa hotel quite recently and while we had been excited to enjoy our stay, on arrival it became pretty evident that our expectations were not going to be met. Also the hidden charge of 4 dollars per person daily was unexpected, Having stayed in so many hotels in the island this was a first to pay that amount. Infrastructure tax is 1 dollar per guest per day and yet they couldn't justify why they had settled for 4!!! We weren't impressed and we let them know about it but I guess once you're there that's it you just have to pay. There was zero ambience, no music no entertainment just quietness that was uncomfortable.. We found their menu to be rather basic and their charges ridiculous. We were more than happy when we discovered the hotel next door that was way cheaper and offered more varieties! The room was ok and was cleaned daily but the shower slippers could be better, they were hideous, Overall stay was ok. Not a place we shall be returning to. Value for money was not met, they can do better.

This is a quiet beach hotel on the beaches of Uroa. The staff is super friendly and welcoming and I would certainly recommend staying here! The Hotel is perfectly integrated in the environment, directly on the beach, the rooms are cleaned every day. Maasai security with the Boss also very good.
Food in the restaurant bit too expensive, but there is in the near other beachfront restaurants. :)

Amazing hotel- we were a group of 6 people and all of us are fully satisfied.
We once had a problem with the water and the staff fixed it in 5 minutes- this is all the bad things I can say :D
The food at the restaurant is great, the staff is very polite and smiling, the rooms were cleaned every day and sprayed against insects. Overall the hotel is great- you wake up, open your door, pass through a frangipani and you are on the beach! Really amazing place for friends or for couples :)
there is nothing I didnt like

Really the place in itself is not too bad, but the owners, the directors of the hotel are very aggressive even threatening, there is a rottweiler running in the lobby ! I mean if you have children its not the place yo want to be in, the place is unclean and not welcoming, its a human serious problem..., we ordered a 4 nights stay but upon arrival, my wife immediately asked to leave, she thought it dirty, the swimming pool was a swamp, the beach ( its not so much the hotel fault is the dirtiest we have seen in ZANZIBAR) I asked the director if we can leave and before we spoke he started to scream at her violently apparently to annihilate any questions about the payment, now i didn't care to pay ... but the violence he used was disproportionate, he threatened to obstruct us from going out of the hotel and to asked the massai security to detain us !!, my wife asked to call the police and he didn't do so ! really like a street brawl like a street thug, and i was in no position to fight, I mean i am on holiday with my wife and daughters !!!, especially that I didn't care to pay !, so I calmed down the situation and paid it all; we left the next morning thanks GOD... I mean at first he was nice but underneath there is dangerous behavior that you don't want to be confronted with on holidays !

the majority of the staff were welcoming and very helpful. the local “security” would engage when we were playing with Boss the dog. it does offer almost complete seclusion and privacy which is nice if that’s what you’re looking for
even after being arranged, hotel transport was not there. we waited, walked the parking lot, and even had locals assist in trying to contact the property. once we were finally able to get in touch with someone, she stated that the driver must have forgotten us and instructed us to get our own ride with no assistance. once we arrived to the property, the main Italian manager told us that the driver was there we must have simply “not seen him”. we made arrangements for transportation and reservations to a Restraunt earlier in the day to an island for dinner. we were told to be downstairs and ready by 6:30 for the reservation at 7. the owner once again had not even called our taxi we were 25 minutes late for our reservation. thankfully the restraint was accommodating and did not mind. one evening while sitting on the patio, a wooden beam fell from the patio where construction was belong completed and struck my fried in the head and face. thankfully we are in healthcare and realized while injuries were present, the outcome could have been much worse. while apologetic, the manager did not offer any type of complimentary stay or discount. while he did insist “he would deliver the biggest bottle of champagne to our room” it did not occur. one of the workers did bring us a glass of wine though while tending to our friends injuries. lastly, the pool was under maintenance while staying. this was never mentioned or relayed as we would have booked somewhere else since the beach was not available for most of the day due to tide. unless you walked extremely far out.
