Zanzistar was such a great discovery! The staff is the kindest we met in Zanzibar, they are professional and lovely and we loved our time there. The location is perfect, two steps to the beach and the surrounding was our favorite part of Jambiani! The room was beautiful, clean and nicely decorated, and the same we can say about the common area. We loved the banana garden. We had a night movie while having dinner. The food is delicious and so are the cocktails!! Overall one of the best time of my entire trip! Do I recommend it?!!! 100%!

Authentic structure, clean rooms and pool, staff were so friendly and helpful.
There wasn’t AC, also generator doesn’t supply the room next beach, WI-FI wasn’t stable, foods were average.

The room was quiet and directly at the beach. We really enjoyed the beautiful sunrise. Staff was very friendly. The Zanzistar restaurant (banana garden) was really cozy. Relaxing place with a nice restaurant at daytime next to it.
The room was quite small und simple. Everything o.k. but for us one night was enough.

The staff was friendly and resourceful.
The room had many artistic decorations.
Terribly hot - the fan was situated not above the bed and didn't cool, an extra standing fan didn't help much. the room was at all times hot and stuffy.
If the hotel would have been on the beach it might not have been necessary, but it's not.
I heard later of nice hotels for the same price on the beach and with air-cons.
So this hotel is simply too expensive for what it offers.
Further, the room was not comfortable - the lights were on the opposite side of the bed so reading in the room was not possible - no other chair to sit on.
Another very unpleasant feature - the "private garden" was mainly a square of sand, with only a tiny stone just before entering to put your shoes on. As a result your feet were ALWAYS sandy and the room and the bed as well. I went usually directly to wash my feet, but the shower was on the other side of the room...
Again, if the hotel would have been on the beach that would have been understandable, but it's not.
And further, the sitting in the "private garden" are 2 very low (say 20 cm from the ground) - very uncomfortable - and of course on returning to the room the feet are full of sand again.
Ans last, the restaurant is really very expensive, and while okay, it's really not any better than the other ones on the beach. (For example a mixed fruit juice cost here 10,000 TZS, while 4,000 in other places. Curries are 32,000 here, 20,000 in other places. without any quality differences.

Small scale of the place, nice african authentic but colourful ambiance. Done simply but with very good taste.
Lack of air-conditioning, thats the only thing, every thing else was great!!!

Dear Zanzistar. This place is so nice. We enjoyed our stay so much. The surrounding is beautiful- you sit and eat in a bananapalm garden and chill around in a very cozy cool vibed and nice well designed little place. As family we enjoyed hanging around and play card, take a dip in the pool etc. And the Zanzistar beachbar, wich you quick go to, is lovely and again very cool and beautiful.
We absolutely had the best food here. Delicious breakfast. The staff is friendly and do their best to help you.
And very much thank to the manager that keep this such a beautiful oasis.

I booked this hotel because it has beautiful photos of being on the beach. When I booked 8 months prior to arrival, it did not say in the description that it was not on the beach (this has since been updated, although the description is still a stretch.) When we arrived, we immediately realised it was not on the beach or near it. It is on the other side of the road with a walk along the road about 300 meters; then, down the path, only then do you arrive at the beach and the hotel's 'beach club', which is an overpriced small shack on the beach. Nothing like the images make out.
The place is tiny, with a tiny pool and dark rooms. The rooms looked OK, clean and tidy. There was work going on next door to our room on a separate village property jackhammering and there is no insulation or aircon. We had booked five nights and two rooms which was unfortunate because we decided that we could not stay there tucked away in a dark beach shack that was not anywhere near the beach. Other people arrived at the same time and they too expressed the same concerns. We lost all our money with no offer of a refund or partial refund. It was a real dampener to our trip. For some reason on Bookings the reviews were all good. But on Google reviews (we found afterwards) they were a bit more honest as to the reality of the property.

A beautiful property, super clean and perfect for our 23month old.
staff were also amazing!
A fridge and kettle would be great especially storing milk and sterilising baby bottles.

the staff were fantastic.
the service was amazing.
the food was of a high standard .
the website is misleading .when we booked this accommodation. we had specific criteria:
1. beachfront
2. pool
the property is not beachfront which was a big surprise and disappointment when we arrived. They have a beach bar which is beach front but this closes at 7.30pm.
The rest of the hotel is on the road behind. it is very small and enclosed. There is no air flow through the restaurant or accommodation so it is very stifling .
The rooms ( although very nicely presented ) are not designed to allow any air through so are incredibly hot and uncomfortable even with a fan . they are also quite dark with very little natural light.
The pool was in fact the smallest pool I have ever seen!
it was just a plunge pool maybe 3m x 3m in size.
The food was of a very high standard however a little more pricey than other places. A few of the prices were a bit unreasonable ie 10000sh for a tea or coffee.
the beach bar was nice but very small and seemed a bit cramped.
We did not spend much time at the property for the above reasons. We had booked 3 nights however had this been a longer booking , I would have complained as we paid for a beachside property with an expectation of a good pool.

Located in the village, a few minutes walk from the beach. Super friendly staff and owner. Delicious breakfast. Very clean rooms (daily housekeeping).
The lack of ventilation in the room maded very stuffy and despite having 2 fans we struggled to sleep here. We booked 4 nights but chose to leave after 3 nights. This place didn't feel as good value as the other places we stayed on the island.

such a beautiful and comfortable property! all very well thought out and the staff are wonderful. Peter the manager is also great at managing everything! Never want to leave this wonderful place.

rooms were incredibly dark with almost no windows and we could barely breathe in the rooms it was extremely humid with no air coming in and constantly smelled like insects repellant. only air we got with extreme heat was from a fan which kept switching on and off during the night due to power outages which woke us up 4 times per night so I had the worst sleep I ever had in a hotel

This place is absolutely perfect. The room is adorable, with a little private garden with hammock and chairs. The beach bar is stunning, just a 2min walk from the main restaurant/hotel - also so beautiful and well cared for. But the best thing is the staff: so thoughtful, friendly and helpful- they made our stay memorable. a special thanks to Peter for all the advice and help.
just a tiny note: the rooms could use a little more air- maybe an extra fan?

Everything was great, especially the staff and the relaxed feeling of the bar and accomodation with sandy ground.
The kitchen is amazing as well. They went above and beyond every time and we were lucky to be there on a Sunday when they organize movie nights so we dined watching a movie and drinking cocktails which are also fantastic.
On the beachfront they also have a bar perfect for lunch and just chilling out.
The bed was extremely comfortable.
Nothing I can think of, everything was perfect.

Staff were super friendly, perfect safe setting for our toddler and staff went above and beyond to play with him and make him welcome, beach was fantastic - quiet, calm, good for swimming and beachcombing with a 2 Yr old, the local kids were also sweet and friendly. Peter and his staff went out of their way to organise a lovely birthday surprise for me with the best cake I've tasted in Tanzania and the massages are amazing! Just so helpful to organise everything we asked as well. Fantastic breakfasts/ food as well. Delicious cocktails...
We have to leave!

Friendly staff!
Mouldy odour in room, lot of noise due to party in neighbouring resort (extremely loud until 3 a.m., apparently every monday)

The rooms were very clean, food delicious and the beach bar served delicious food.
The beach bar is not attached to the hotel. You have to walk from one facility to the next. However it’s very close and not a issue.

An extraordinary beautiful place with super friendly staff and delicious food! Everybody working there is really warm and they help you with anything you need. The hotel has a very aesthetic style and is located in a safe area next to small shops and other restaurants. Another plus is that it’s really authentic - in the middle of the local life of Zanzibar.
No super fast internet, so probably not suitable for zoom-meetings or similar. not sure if there are options nearby though.

Nicely designed property and room decor. Great food served and really great management and staff.
The room was unbearably hot. a small ceiling fan and an additional floor fan that was very, very faint and went off at times meant we slept really badly. It was the last of 9 hotels we stayed in all over the island and this was the only one where this was a problem for us. Also a toilet with just mosquito net in between it and the nearby eating area felt awkward and cramped. You could hear the nearby diners while sitting on the toilet! It’s a shame because the staff who run this hotel are really great and the room was lovely apart from that.

Do you know the sensation of arriving home? It’s the second time in Zanzistar and that’s the way we feel. Among friends, at home. Peter is the perfect manager, Simon and Rafa are amazing and Jerry Is the most amazing DJ 😁.
Everything is amazing

Such a beautiful, quaint and homely place just minutes away from the beach. Literally less than 5 minutes away. The room was spacious and clean. The beach bar and restaurant is right on the beach and their food is so good. Their coconut smoothie was on of the best things I’ve ever had in my entire life! The owner is so lovely and super helpful.
nothing, I loved everything.
