The place has been a magic place for our stay in Zanzibar. We couldnt expect such a good vibes and relax at Mama Root.
The host has been always available and friendly with the us, trying to explain the best things to do according to the season.

The Staff were brilliant, the beach is beautiful, the food was good, the games available and the honesty bar were great. The dog was lovely, the wildlife and sealife were very special. People in the village were friendly and not pushy.
I didn't realise there was no aircon and it got very hot and we just didn't sleep even with the fan on. Our host brought us a second fan the next day which made a lot of difference, thank you.
The pillows were lumpy (although clean) and the sheets were bobbled, I imagine due to age and cleaning. It didn't make sleep very comfortable so I 'borrowed' one of the seat pads as a pillow. In retrospect I should have asked our host for another pillow because she would no doubt have given me a new one. Later in the stay our sheets were changed to be ones which weren't bobbled.

Ik genoot van de zee, het dorpsleven, de vissers, het eten, de kalmte en de traagheid van de dag. Olivia is een perfectionist, en dat zie je aan alles.
Het avondeten is over het algemeen wat overpriced vonden wij. Maar het was gezellig, makkelijk en zeker niet verkeerd.
Genoeg andere mogelijkheden in het dorp, mocht je elders willen eten.

Por onde começar? Localização - Esta zona da ilha é idílica para descansar! Não vão encontrar o movimento de Paje nem a loucura turística do norte da ilha! Este alojamento é uma pérola escondida no cantinho de uma praia que foi das melhores que encontramos na nossa estadia de quase 1 mês em Zanzibar. É uma praia de pescadores e por isso haverão muitos barcos mas podemos nadar em maré alta e até fazer paddle ou snorkeling. Actividades- O alojamento dá a possibilidade de alugar prancha de paddle por 10 dólares por hora: façam isso porque valerá a pena a diversão, sobretudo perto do sunset! Existem muitos livros e jogos que podemos usufruir livremente e inúmeros recantos confortáveis para o fazer nos vários espaços comuns. De noite, acedem a fogueira no jardim e podemos ficar só a ver as ondas do mar debaixo de um céu de estrelas.
Staff- alojamento familiar gerido por uma família com uma simpatia que as palavras não podem descrever. Sentimo-nos em casa desde a primeira interação. A mãe está sempre disponível para nos ajudar em tudo, um sentido de humor apurado e uma honestidade e empatia que tornaram a estadia memorável. Todo o restaurante staff foi sempre tão simpático e disponível, com um sorriso no rosto, nota-se que gostam de trabalhar no Mama Root e que tem orgulho no seu trabalho.
Comida- o melhor pequeno almoço que comemos num mês na Tanzânia! Farto, fresco e cuidado. Trabalhamos na área e sabemos apreciar todo o esforço. Servem também jantares (reservados com antecedência) e foi sempre uma refeição incrível, sem uma única falha e por um preço muito justo.
Outros pormenores: decoração cheia de cor, vida, e de aproveitamento de materiais. Detalhes inacreditáveis, com um uso de recursos como nunca vi em mais nenhum outro lado. Não há pormenor que não tenha sido considerado: há um frigorífico com bebidas num regime de confiança, toalhas de praia, loiças feitas em Zanzibar e shampoo e sabão de empresa local sustentável. Um mapa para colocarmos um pin de onde viemos.

The location is absolutely beautiful. The restaurant served a delicious meal for us, I would recommend the fish with rice. The hotel dog was a cutey pie and friendly with adults and children and mainly minded his own business so it's OK if ur not a dog lover. Once you go out the hotel, the atmosphere does change, and u see more of the local life so be prepared for the massive change in scenery.

We loved the host and the unique atmosphere of this place. We felt in paradise, far from touristic area, only sharing the place with local fishermen. The place is decorated with very good taste and you really feel in your dream home.
We also enjoyed to rent a paddle and navigate along the coast on the crystal clear water.
We wish we will come back soon !

The food was excellent and the hospitality from mama root is as if you are at home. All the arrangements for so organized and also the beach is so in front of the property that you will just sit on the beach whole day and still will not be bored.

My husband and I loved staying in Mama Root at the end of our trip in Tanzania (Kilimanjaro, safari tour, Chumbe Island) and found Mama Root to be one of the highlights of the trip. It was amazing to just relax at the hotel and read in a peaceful environment (and after more than 2 weeks of adventure, it was just what we needed). We ate every meal there and everything was delicious and they helped my husband set up a cute beachside dinner our last evening as a surprise. There are dogs on the property that are friendly and would walk with us on the beach. Overall an amazing experience! Wish we stayed longer and hope to come back again.

We spent the last 3 nights of our honeymoon here and we couldn't have found a better place. From the welcome to the goodbye we felt like staying with a family. Our room was very nice, good sized and the bed was really comfortable. Bathroom was creatively decorated. We loved the common areas inside and outside with loads of handmade decorations and board games. The food was out of this world! They have the best chef and we had 3 lovely dinners and 1 lunch during our stay. The breakfasts are great as well, you have a choice of either eggs or pancakes but think a large plate plus coffee or tea and a fresh juice. There are 2 lovely dogs but they keep to themselves. Mama Root and her little family will stay in our memories forever. Thank you

beautiful place with a homely atmosphere, run by a great multicultural family with good taste and respect :)..kind of at the end of the world :) but it was exactly what we needed at the end of our trip. Mama Root is the perfect getaway in Zanzibar. The property is right on one of the most gorgeous and less touristy beaches, the hotel is small and intimate, the included breakfast is great (lots of fresh fruits fruits and your choice of eggs or pancakes), and the owners and staff are amazing and always checking in to make sure all your needs are met. This place is truly an amazing find. No notes.

We loved every minute of our stay at Mama Root. The location is stunning with beautiful views of the ocean and the sunset and a beautiful white beach where you can walk and look at all the different shells. We spent a lot of time swimming and there are also some nice things to see when you snorkel. Our room (number 1) was super comfortable and, like the rest of the hotel, stylishly furnished. So many cool features of upcycled furniture and decorations. The place feels very peaceful and quiet, just exactly what we needed after the otherwise quite busy places we visited. Great food too! We will definitely be back and I can recommend Mama Root to anyone who is looking for tranquility and beauty. Mama and Baba Root were lovely hosts, thank you so much.

Our room had a garden view, but the property’s garden is fully equipped, so you can relax and listen to the wawes of the ocean. A few step on the stairs and you’re on the beach in front of the apartment. The staff was really amazing. They handled our special food requests (like gluten free and lactose free meals). They shared their own food with the guests. They were very friendly, and their daughter was sooo cute. :)
Maybe a fridge could be in the room, and the matress of the bed should be renewed. But these are not a big issues.

I love the overall vibe, the hospitality and that was the first room where I wasn’t sweating during the night :) The bed was really comfy and the owners make the entire place so cool with simply and clever ideas.

great location directly at the beach, not touristy, extraordinary owners and amazing food. everything is built with their own hands and so much love to detail. highly recommended if you are looking for a place to still feel and experience the real Zanzibar. Mama and Papa Root are organizing trips as well, we booked the Safari Blue via them and everything went perfect

This holiday home is amazing in every way, every detail is so thoughtful and beautifully thought out. The food was all fresh and delicious and the staff extremely friendly and kind, they were at our disposal with everything we needed.

We had an amazing time at Mama Root. The owners were very hospitable and catered for all our needs. The restaurant offers fresh, local food that was absolutely delicious! The room was very well designed and decorated, we felt right at home. The hotel is right next to the beach and offers an incredible view over the sea. There are various sofas, sun chairs and hammocks to lounge in and sunbathe. Perfect ro relax and explore the less touristic side of Zanzibar.

My fiance and I had the most magical week at Mama Root. Olivia and Zube took so well care of us and made us feel like family. We've traveled quite a lot but no other place compares to Mama Root and we hope to be able to come back.
The rooms and hotel are beautiful with many nice spots to relax and recharge. When travellign food is very important to us and their cooking was by far the best food we had during our three weeks in Tanzania. Having a sunset dinner at their restaurant is what life is about.
Kizimkaze city in itself is very quiet, but there are some good restaurants and the possibility to buy some basic groceries. That being said we were happy to stay in Kizimkaze over the more touristic cities and beaches, which we still discovered through day trips.

A beautiful small hotel located directly located on a a picturesque beach in the south of Zanzibar. The Hotel and the rooms are clean and well maintained. The Hotel offers a great vibr, wirh alot of details and areas to relax and enjoy. The area around the Hotel does not offer much in terms of entertainment, except some small local shops and local restaurants close by. So it is perfect for enjoying nature, relaxing and spending time around/in the Ocean. Food and drinks are also available in the restaurant area. Food is excellent. Finally the staff is extremely friendly and supportive, which made the stay even more enjoyable. I definitely would stay there again. Best tip would be to rent a car beforehand to have better access to the entire island, and be less reliant on bus/taxi.

First time on Zanzibar, but if we found a real treasure in Mama Root. It was all perfect. The location, the hotel and the beach. So if someday we are coming back that will be the destination again for sure.
South is peaceful and quiet. We also stayed in Jambiani and Nungwi but this is really different. if you looing for cozy places where you can meet local life and want to enjoy the vibe.
You can jogging alone on the beach and then you can swim alone in the marcellous ocean in the rising sun behind you.
only 4 nights, that was a mistake :)
