Room for a crowd at Akey Valley in southwest Wisconsin
About this farm stay rental
Check the calendar to plan your 2023 stay in the country with us at Akey Valley. Akey Valley, LLC. is a vacation rental home located in scenic Richland County in southwest Wisconsin. Join us in the country! The Akey Valley farmhouse is over 140+ years old. The original house was built in 1879 with an addition built in 1980 (ish). The home is fully furnished and sleeps 12 comfortably with 6 bedrooms (five bedrooms upstairs and one on the main level) and plenty of space available for air mattresses. The house has a large remodeled kitchen, a sitting parlor room, dinning room, two bathrooms both on the main level and a large great room. Make yourself at home for the week or weekend. Akey Valley is a family affair, we are not part of a property management company, resort or hotel chain looking to make tons of money off our rental. Dennis and Angie own the property and are active in the farm operation. They are just taking over the rental management from Eric & Amy, Angie's sister. Their son Ethan does the lawn moving. Angie's mom, Marilynn, does the laundry. It is a working farm and the cows in the pasture and the tractors in the barn belong to Angie's parents. At Akey Valley, we want people to experience and enjoy time in the country. The home includes a living room, dining room, sitting room, and two bathrooms both on the main level (there are NO bathrooms upstairs). The large fully equipped kitchen was remodeled in 2012. It has a wall oven, electronic cook top, oversized refrigerator, dishwasher, microwave, coffee maker and other small appliances like waffle maker, toaster, popcorn maker, blender and a tabletop George Forman grill. All cooking utensils, silverware and dishware are included. Guests will need to bring in and prepare their own food. All bed linens and towels are provided. We offer great accommodations but please know it is NOT new construction. The main floor has central air but there is no AC (for summer) or heating (for winter) to the upstairs. For the summer, we have box fans in every room with large windows. In the fall, we have big comforters to keep cozy. We close the farmhouse during the winter. The house also includes a 26x26 great room addition that’s perfect for gatherings or activities with a larger group! We installed Wi-Fi at the house in October 2014. It has worked well for guests but know it's not super fast (we would not advise streaming movies). Some things we don't have: cable or dish network (we do have a TV with local channels). Cell phone service can be spotty - it works for some and not for others. We hope our guests enjoy the beautiful scenery of the driftless region and have a time to sit back, relax and truly get away. There are so many things to do in southwest Wisconsin and the driftless area. Enjoy Frank Lloyd Wright destinations like House on the Rock and Taliesin, along with the outdoor American Players Theater and great golf at The House on the Rock Golf Resort in Spring Green (only 15 minutes away). Enjoy fishing? Richland County alone has over 270 miles of class I and class II trout stream. Along with the Wisconsin River and nearby fisheries, this area is the ultimate getaway. Within a 20 minutes drive, enjoy the Wisconsin River, Willow Creek, Bear Creek, Whitemound Lake, Ash Creek, Melancthon Creek and Mill Creek. If you want to drive a little farther, you can explore Blue River, Fennimore Fork, Black Earth Creek, West Fork of the Kickapoo River, Billings Creek and Devils Lake and State Park. If golf is more your style, you can golf a different course every day of your stay with multiple courses all within a short drive. Visit The House on the Rock Golf Resort in Spring Green (15 minutes), The Baraboo Country Club, Baraboo (55 minutes), The Reedsburg Country Club, Reedsburg (40 minutes), Viroqua Hills Golf Course, Viroqua (45 minutes) and the West Brook Hills Golf Course in Plain (25 minutes). There are a handful of great local Wineries within easy driving distance too-Wild Hills Winery (15 min), Narrows Creek Winery (30 min), Baraboo Bluff Winery (50 min), Wollersheim Winery & Distillery (45 min) and Spurgeon Vineyards & Winery (30 min). Area attractions within a half hour’s drive include: American Players Theater, Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesen, the Spring Green Art Fair, The House on the Rock Golf Course, Tower Hill State Park, the lower Wisconsin River, the Morel (mushroom) Festival in Muscoda, the Fall Art Tour, Oakwood Fruit Farm, and the Mid-Continent Railway Museum. Our back country roads are perfect for biking, pedal or motorcycle! Area attractions about an hour away include: the House on the Rock, Governor Dodge State Park in Dodgeville, the Circus Museum, Devil's Lake State Park, the International Crane Foundation in the Baraboo area, the Wisconsin Dells, Mount Horeb, Cave of the Mounds. Madison is 60 minutes east, Viroqua is a short hour northwest and La Crosse is 90 minutes northwest. Enjoy country living; take in the beauty of the area and be amazed at the peace and quiet of the country. Travel time (ish): Madison 60 minutes, La Crosse 90 minutes, Chicago 3 hours and 30 minutes, Twin Cities 4 hours, Rochester, MN 3 hours and Wisconsin Dells 60 minutes. This was our fourth stay at the Akey House. It is a fine place for a family gathering; we had five adults and two dogs. We enjoyed sitting on the front porch watching deer, listening to birds and coyotes, reading and just relaxing. The house is ideal location for those who wish to canoe, hike, and bicycle. It is modern (kitchen is great) yet retains that old-time feel in the dining room, porch, parlor and bedrooms. Very comfortable for large or small gatherings.

This place was extremely well kept, and all information presented accurately. We were there in Nov. - While there was no heat upstairs, still very comfortable with the transfer vents, never felt too warm downstairs. The large group dining/gathering room is fantastic for larger groups (we had 11 in our group). Plenty of blankets and additional places to sleep (comfortable couches). The had EVERYTHING you could possible need - and everything was clearly labeled. The surrounding land is beautiful - just a true gem for someone looking for a true historic spot to rest.
Thank you Amy & Eric!

What a beautiful place, with a great house and a family vacation! Loved the view in every direction. A little remote, but that was so appealing to us!

We needed a place to stay for a special wedding that was in Spring Green WI. This was the place that would hold all the family (12 people) traveling from Missouri and allowed our dogs.
Perfect place!!!! All the essentials and more!!
Thank you for sharing your home with us.

Our group very much enjoyed the house. The working cattle farm was great to watch. We enjoyed the bike paths that were close by. We did some board games in the evening. The kitchen was well supplied with equipment. T

Three families (6 adults + 7 kids ages 8-13 yrs) stayed here and we had plenty of space. The property had even more amenities than listed. We were welcomed by cows in the pasture and local cheeses in the fridge. The kids had so much fun running around the property and having campfires that they asked if we could live there forever. The kitchen was well stocked, the beds were comfortable, and the owners were responsive and easy to get ahold of. Next time we have a family reunion, we will definitely stay here again!

When we walked into the house, we were happy to see that some of the vintage charm has been preserved. It was nice having a remodeled kitchen, though. It seemed like the house was more than a typical farm house. However, it achieved a feeling like living on a farm. It sits on a quiet road away from loud traffic. We spent time sitting on the front porch and watching the cows roam in the back yard. It was very quiet and real, perfect for a relaxing vacation. Even though there was a lot of room in this house, my husband and I want to return someday.

Akey Valley is excellent! It is spectacularly roomie, gorgeous, historic, and has all the modern conveniences! Additionally, it is set in one of the most beautiful parts of the state - stunning views from every window & close to beautiful parks (Devil's Lake, Governor Dodge, and Wyalusing) Amy & Eric are excellent hosts! Akey Valley was ideal for our extended family.

We really enjoyed this spacious old farm house, with many modern amenities. So much room, so much character and so very very interesting. The hosts were easy to communicate with, accommodating - Lori's dad especially was an all around pleasant and inviting guy. He dropped by the first day to make sure we got settled in okay, answered all our questions and then left us to ourselves.... well mostly - except that we begged him to come back and show us the old school house across the street, which he was more than willing to do :). For anyone who loves the bucolic serenity of the Driftless region, needs space for a group and wants to bring their dog along for the journey, I couldn't imagine a finer place than this one. For the number of people this old house is fit to accommodate, and the fact that they allow pets, it is AMAZINGLY pristine. The owners clearly either go to great lengths to keep it in good repair or they're selective with who they choose to rent to... or perhaps both! We'll certainly be looking for a reason to go back very soon! Thanks so much!

Wonderful time in Southwest Wisconsin!
We had a family of 20 stay at the house for an extra long weekend. We had a great time! Plenty of space to hangout, fully furnished with all the things anyone would need, and a very peaceful rural setting to disconnect from such a crazy world!

Family wedding weekend
Loved Akey Valley! Youngest daughter got married at the Octagon barn near Spring Green. We wanted a place where our 4 kids, spouses, 3 grandchildren and 2 dogs could function together without being cramped. Akey Valley fit the bill. We were close enough to the barn and to wal mart for last minute fixes. We had a huge kitchen to have meals and fix appetizers for 150. There was plenty of room for hair and makeup to get done for 11 in one place. Amy was wonderful answering any question we had as we were not familiar with the area and she even loaned us an extra crockpot and roaster. Only down fall was only bathrooms are downstairs but we adjusted just fine and made the best of it! Thanks Amy we hope to be back so we can explore the area!

I’m coming back here
Beautiful and relaxing! I loved the farm, the scenery, and the house character. It was a beautiful stay for 4 nights and those were the best bed sheets I’ve ever slept in. I slept so sound during the night and there was always something to do during the day.

Well-appointed, roomy house
The house was comfy and roomy, and well supplied with everything we needed. The front porch was great for hanging out and we appreciated the garage to store bikes and golf clubs. We really appreciated all the throws and blankets available, especially for cool nights at APT.
Almost all the members of my group had stayed in Akey Valley before, and knew that the only bathrooms are downstairs, while five of the six bedrooms are upstairs. So, yes, there were middle-of-the-night encounters on the stairs.
The only deficit mentioned by more than one person: inadequate lighting in the bedrooms: only one inadequate reading light in the horse-themed room; battery-run lanterns that did not work; no bedside light in some rooms; and no spare batteries for battery-run lamps.

Ladies weekend
We enjoyed our time at Akey Valley. The house was Nicely decorated with lovely old furnishings, but modern conveniences. With 10 of us staying there it was nice to Cook our meals there and have a large dining room to eat in. Love the location. So quite, so peaceful and short drive to different areas.

Magical stay at Akey Valley
Eric and Amy were terrific about communicating prior to the visit .
The property is charming in beautiful Southwest Wisconsin.
Farm house was clean and well appointed.
Loved reading some of the history of the property in the binder that the owners put together.
Fantastic to have six bedrooms for the family gathering.
Fire pit was a really fun feature.
Overall, a fantastic place for a family reunion!
We would definitely consider returning as our stay was wonderful!

Beautiful property!
I rented the house for my 31st annual girls weekend. The house was perfect for the 7 of us. All had their own bed to sleep in. There was a large and well supplied kitchen, 2 bathrooms and a wonderful great room to gather in for the long chats. The house had so much historical character and the farm land was so beautiful. The hosts were very good with communicating all the details and answering my questions. The house was very clean when we arrived. I will stay here again when I come back to explore more of Southwest WI.

Nice location at a very rural location on small country roads not very close to the APT theater.
The Akey Valley property is most pleasant & in a most relaxing setting but returning to the home after evening theater via country roads can be rather daunting! The home itself is very warm & welcoming and the owners have managed to update the interior while retaining the 1880 ambiance of the property. The kitchen is extensive and the nice front porch was a great place to sit & read. The bedrooms proved to be what we needed, though two bathrooms for 8 or 9 adults is a stretch. (Apparently, another bath is planned for the 2nd floor where presently there are none.) We did not use the bicycles due to rainy weather but would if we return next year & we were pleased to see them. There was even some homemade jam & a bottle of local wine to welcome us! All in all, a very pleasant & relaxing place for a 3 night Labor Day weekend.
The only negative was having to pay VRBO $100+ to process my credit card for the 3 night stay. Whenever, I attempted to reach the processing firm somewhere in Texas, the email bounced back & I had to deal with Amy Lord who actually knew something about the property because she & her husband own it. The profile listed by VRBO was incorrect as to the number of bedrooms but since it was impossible to contact the agency by email or 800#, Amy had to endure several emails & responded to them quickly & helpfully in every case. Why is there no 800# or other phone contact listed by VRBO? Why is there no email contact?? Again, the property owner was exceedingly helpful, while VRBO took over $100 merely to process the credit card transaction, I can't imagine another resource charging this much just to book a B&B or other rental property for 3 nights. But hats off to Amy Lord at the Akey Valley home!

More room than you will ever need.
Great place, great location. Really nice house with all the accommodations. Really the only downfall that I can say at all is that the upstairs is not air air-conditioned. Window fans only. It was very comfortable when we were there and was no problem at all. Would like to thank the Lord's for a wonderful time.

Large home in a beautiful location
Loved our time here! The home is located on a country road nested between farms. We spent our time cooking out, using the fire pit, riding our bikes on the backroads and keeping an eye on the cows next door.
Great place for a family reunion, will definitely stay again in the future.

Fun in the country
Great stay for our family, 15 of us. In the country but close enough to town if something is needed. Plenty of room in the house to find aplace to "get away from the crowd". Plenty of games to keep all the different ages of the children occupied in our down times.
Great advice from Amy on the local attactions.
Loved our stay.

A few kinks in an otherwise amazing house
Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Akey Valley; however, I wish I had known a few things before booking. First, the air conditioning is only downstairs, and only in some parts, when all but one of the bedrooms are upstairs. If I had known this before I booked, I would not have. Several people in our family have trouble regulating body temperature (fans do not do enough to help) and when we saw "air conditioning" we assumed we'd be cool at night. Luckily, the weather cooperated and it wasn't too hot at night. I felt really bad for the people coming after us. Second, the wifi was advertised as "good not great". The wifi would connect to our devices but did not function at all. This meant we had no access to emails or streaming apps, and there is no cable in the house. They had warned us of the poor cell service, which I appreciated. It was much stronger than the wifi. This wouldn't have necessarily been a deal breaker, but it would have changed how we prepared for the trip.
The house itself is amazing and full of character and charm. I'd recommend it to people, but add these caveats. I wish the profile had included this information.
