The romantic setting in the middle of nature

The Hlane Royal National Park is a gem of a place, and a real must-see for visitors to Swaziland - it is like Africa-in-Miniature, where you can see an amazing variety of animals. The waterhole is a huge plus, as you get to see rhinos, hippos and all sorts of antelope throughout the day just a short distance from the main area of the camp. I loved the fact that there was no electricity, just the use of paraffin lamps in the evening, which made my stay there in the bush even more authentic (though there is a plug in the bar available for charging devices). Great tours and activities can also be organised there, and I particularly loved my bush walk in the rhino section.
Some of the staff were welcoming and friendly, some did not seem to enjoy speaking with or helping visitors - strange considering this is probably one of the main sources of their salaries. It was also not easy communicating with the Lodge in advance - initial enquiry emails sent outside booking.com sometimes needed chasing up, and although I booked meals and activities in advance with Ronald on booking.com as I was told it was peak season and need to book in advance, the reception didn't know about any of these when I arrived. I had to book and pay as I went, which wasn't always easy, and I sometimes had to wait until the last minute to see whether an activity would go ahead or not.

We were definitely able to connect with nature. There's no electricity in the rooms, but there are nice lamps for you to use to light up the room and walk around the park during the night. The dinner was great. It was buffet-style and there were quite a few options to choose from, and the cake was really good. It had a really nice light custard sauce that you can drizzle on top. That with a cup of hot rooibus tea was an amazing way to end the evening. The sunrise drive was my favorite part. Nelly was a great guide. He was funny and he made learning about the animals fun.
We booked for the sunset drive, and I made the mistake of forgetting that it is winter in August in Eswatini and followed the summer schedule. The start time for the sunset drive was 15:30 in winter, but we arrived at 15:50 for the 16:00 summer start time. It would have been nice if the staff who we paid for the activities to had informed us of the start times. Granted, it was busy and there was a long line. The staff probably meant to tell us but forgot, and we should have asked ourselves. Luckily, Nelly was so kind to take us. It ended up being a great drive. And then, he was our guide again for the sunrise drive.

We stayed at the Bubesi Camp, the houses are in a beautiful place but very old and they definitely need to be refurbished.
Old houses, average food, slow staff.

We saw the most amazing game right by the main lodge at the watering hole. It was incredible.
We weren't told we needed to arrive before dark to get across to our cottage on the other side of the park, so after a lot of persuading we convinced them to let us drive ourselves across in the dark. We weren't told we needed to book onto game drives in advance so they were booked up.

What not to like to be in an authentic part of Africa? The location is amazing, inside the national park, only a few steps away from hippos and rhino taking their baths in the pond while guests are sipping coffee at the restaurant. The rooms are so charming, clean and have all the necessary comfort for being in the middle of a National Park.
Nothing. My only recommendation to future guests rather than the property: arrive during the day because after dark you cannot drive in the park and will not be able to reach your rooms ;-)

Had to wait forever for the dinner

The staff was exceptionally friendly and accommodating. The camp was very neat and the houses above expectation! We were pleasantly surprised.
The gravel road to Bubhezi camp was a bit of a challenge.

The staff gave us a warm welcome & friendly, helpfull & informative of activities. The stay was comfortable without any hick-ups. The chalets were clean, neat and well equipped. Fire wood was supplied and added a nice touch to be able to light the fire place inside. Stunning views and the sound of the bush. We saw alot of animals without even searching to long. Well worth the trip.
Only thing that made me a bit dissapointed was not seeing the lions.

Not all route signs very clearly marked in the reserve

The breakfast and dinner were very good.
The staff were extremely friendly and helpful.
I found it impossible to get through to Hlane by phone and my emails went unanswered. Very frustrating.
The parking too far from our chalet and in a muddy area.

Incredible place: great location, beautiful park. Saw lion, elephant,.hippo, crocodile, rhino and lots of amazing birds.
Saturday night was a buffet supper which was delicious but we'd have preferred a la carte.

Cottage was spacious, with more than enough room for all travelers. The kitchen was utilitarian, but more than enough to prepare all meals we weren't taking at the restaurant. Nice location within the reserve, with easy viewing to the ever active water hole. Pretty decent birding around the lodge.
There was a pervasive gas lamp smell that stayed in the air throughout the night.

The place, location, the water hole, the wildlife.
No free wifi, incompetent staff, mostly. There was one competent lady, though.

We stayed in the Big Hut, and it was big for sure! I had booked a bigger accommodation since no double room was available at the time, but not complaining about the spacious living & dining area, kitchen & large bed room! As mentioned, there's no elektricity in the house, only at the restaurant. Didn't see any sockets there either, so charge in your car or take a powerbank/spare batteries for your camera (and enjoy the no-phone time ;-) ) In the evenings they provide you with parafine lamps, which gives a cosy vibe to it all.
But now, let's talk about why you should really stay here! And that's the surroundings! The national park is great: from the lounge chairs in the garden or restaurant, you have a nice view of a drinking pool. We were lucky a few times and witnessed rhino's drinking, hippo's chilling & an elephant bathing, just metres away from us. The drives & walks are also recommanded: just be warned you might get closer than you would ever dreamed to rhino's & other beautiful animals. Great & very friendly staff. Easy to reach by car.
Not really a big negative since it comes with the location: but the water from the tap is brownish so stock up on bottled water for drinking, brushing your teeth & cooking (if you have the intentions of doing so). I wasn't too keen on showering with the water either since it had an odd small for my European nose, but you do what you have to do.

the property is amazing for people willing to visite Hlane NP, the value for money was great and the property was really charming
be aware of the fact that there is no electricity and that therefore it can get tricky at night so take a lamp and power banks. same goes for WiFi. but it’s part of the expierience and the charm of the place :)

Firewood, nature, great little house. Animals
It is a few km of gravel road to restaurant / main gate. It is not a problem if you have time though.

We stayed in a rondavel hut located just a short walk from the restaurant area. The accommodation was clean and well provided for with a comfortable bed and full mosquito net. There is no electricity in the huts and we were provided with two paraffin lanterns for lighting, plus a candle. The on site restaurant provides very good food at affordable prices and overlooks a water hole where we watched rhino, hippo, giraffes and antelope. The whole ambience is one of peace and tranquility, at one with nature. We thoroughly enjoyed being here.

Amazing experience! Would definitely stay there again. I brought a portable phone charger and I had my data plan on and I was able to get service in and out. Stayed in the Nvlodu camp with no electricity but the water is super hot for a great long shower and the lanterns they provide make the atmosphere so unique and pretty! Rooms are super clean and comfy, restaurant is good prices and staff are wonderful and helpful. The safari was amazing and we were able to see lions. Giraffes elephants hippos monkey baboons were all coming to the water hole. Beautiful park!! Can’t wait to take the kids

There were Rhinos visiting the restaurant area. There is no electricity so the soft light from the paraffin lamps gave a magical feeling to the place. They allowed us to camp when the heat in the chalet became unbearable at no extra charge.
We booked for 7 adults and we got chalet number 1. There were 3 double up in the roof area. It was unbearably hot as the heat rises and of course no aircon as there are no electricity. The mosquito nets were almost dark brown with all the dust. The bath water is a brown colour. No shower. The communal seating area were so dirty with food stains that we could not sit there. We visited the restaurant on the first night and the even though we were the only table in the restaurant, some of our plates of food was cold. There was no ice !

The location was beautiful we woke up to a a group of rhinos and that was just amazing
It was truly exceptional and I would definitely go back. I would recommend that they fix the road leasing to some of the camps

We thought because we booked something without electricity it would be very simple, but this was one of the nicest rooms we had during our trip in South Africa. it was spacious, beautiful and the location is just stunning.
The waterhole as a central point where you can spot so many animals is amazing and the food (buffet) also very good. First time we ate properly as vegetarians.
Nothing.
