L'emplacement...

Nice people, good location, nice food (although not many choices if you dont eat seafood), spacious bungalows, affordable great tour with whalesharks
No airconditioning! I was there in january and it was very very hot. Only one noisy fan above the bed that was not enough. No hot showers. No water pressure. Toilet did not flush (when I told staff they said to lift the lid each time and flush manually). Not worth the amount I paid at all.

Everything is amazing at Juani!
It's not a problem for me, but it should be advised that there's no hot water at the moment (July 23)

The staff and surroundings were extremely friendly and open. Our room was perfect and simple for our stay on Mafia. The food served was very fresh and always on point.
Another good thing is the location of the property, just at the beach, with beach lounges and activities in case you want to see some more than just being in the hotel.
Since someone is always around you can be sure that all of your belongings are a 100% safe and you can even decide to leave your room open or leave your phones to charge somewhere out.
The only thing was that the bathroom had a door but the toilet and shower itself were in two rooms though they didn’t have doors.

Right on the beach. Dinner was good and bonfire on first night. Musa was very friendly and nice and tought us some swahili.
No WiFi no hot shower beach was very durty couldn't swim. Nothing around at all. Overpriced!!!!!! Spent all our time in hotel along the beach as jambo didn't do food other than breakfast and dinner at 7:30 pm only small selection of cold drinks. Rats in our room(complained about this and got a thanks for letting us know as an answer) bacari was nice when introducing the hotel but once he knew you weren't interested in yours was not friendly.... They give you keys for the room but everyone has a spare anyway...

The location is superb with immediate access to the beach and the beginning of any excursions that take your fancy.
The staff are very helpful, fun loving and a great source of local knowledge.
The fresh, locally sourced food was delicious and lovingly presented.
It was all great.

We had an amazing stay at Juani beach bungalows. Truly cosy, comfortable, very clean, surrounded by greenery, with direct access to the sea and a super nice walk to the centre of Kilindoni. Food was delicious, staff lovely and Musa himself was an excellent caring and informative host. Most recommended!
This was not related to the accommodation but to the trip we organised through the contacts of the accommodation. We would advise all visitors of Mafia island to choose carefully the organiser of the whale shark trip and ensure that they are respectful of whale sharks and the sea, knowleadgeable of the sharks’ behaviour and of the best way to interact with them, and tell tourists what is and isn’t allowed when swimming with them. Chasing sharks with motor boat, stopping right in front of them and making tourists jump right next to them is sadly a rather common practice by some organisers, scaring and at times hurting the animals.

We weren’t the only guests to extend their stay at at these beach bungalows. The rooms are comfy and spacious(although cold water only), and the meals varied and good quality at a reasonable price (TSH20K).
We took the snorkelling trip to Chole Island, Blue Lagoon, plus barbecue on the sandbank - an excellent day out.
Our attempt to see the whale sharks failed. In fact on 3 days when we were there they failed to see them. I suspect the success of the trip was over sold, and, unfortunately, the price is the same for a once on a lifetime experience or 3 hours ploughing up and down the waves in a small boat seeing nothing.

Located right on the beach from where the boats go out for the whale shark trips. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Free hot drinks and filtered drinking water 24hrs self service.
There are so many mosquitoes and sandflies in the area, may be not the fault of the accommodation but I wasn’t expecting to get bitten during the day so I hadn’t applied insect repellent before I arrived and was bitten quite badly the first day. They do have insect repellent for guests to use if they don’t have any. Another person was bitten in-spite of applying repellent. you do need to be aware if you are one of those people who gets bitten a lot. As a solo woman traveller I felt very safe.

It's a large room with large bathroom, the location is rural and you step on sand as soon as you leave your building which was lovely. The staff is very friendly and helpful. Breakfast was pretty much the same every day, but it was enough to fill you up. The beach was lovely, but expect a lot of plastic rubbish. The hotel staff however clean the sand outside the hotel daily. Be also aware that during November-February there are loads of Nomad Jellyfishes which cause very painful burns...it's advisable to swim with a mask and snorkel so that you can see them (they are very beautiful if you keep your distance) there are also hundreds of colorful star fish if you fancy snorkeling.
There are a number of things how this hotel could be improved. 3 sun loungers were not enough for the amount of people in the hotel. The only other option was sitting on a chair or on the sand. Due to the rural location and gaps below the door I had a large cockroach running over me in the middle of the night (the mosquito net did not stop it) The cold shower was also barely a trickle and washing long hair took forever. For the price we paid, I expected a far better standard.

Fantastic staff, always happy and smiling, and the owner Mussa was super helpful when we arrived with the ferry from the mainland! The location is great, next to a nice beach with no beach sellers harrasing you. They also arrange the whale shark snorkeling tours right from the property at a fair price. Breakfast was super and the overall vibe of other travellers at this hotel was very good with people from all over hanging with each other. This was our favourite hotel during our whole trip in Zanzibar/Tanzania/Mafia and so good that we returned here for an additional night.
Nothing to complain about at all

The location and the beach are truly breathtaking. I enjoyed the outside facilities and the restaurant - the food was quite expensive but excellent. The staff and the owner are very friendly and always ready to help.
The water in the shower was always cold. This is fine for one night, but not for 3. The room was very basic and spartan and there was a lot of noise at night. They had no blankets available, just a sheet, and we were cold so we had to sleep with socks and a sweater.

Moussa and his staff are super friendly, always available to support and to make you feel home far from home. The location is wonderful and a perfect spot to enjoy a sunset walk or a drink. Food is also great, so we will definitely consider coming back!

Nothing. Wifi slow, but it's what I expected in a paradise like this.

Almost everything.Mussa, the owner is a happy good guy,Bakiri, the receptionist will help and organise you everything you wish, and Jabiri ,the chef cook the best dinner I have ever eaten in Afrika. If you don't expect a 5star accommodation, but a cosy, familiar one,you will enjoy your stay very very very much. The localisation is fantastic,a few steps,an you will find yourself a 5 km long deserted white sanded beach, which is perfect for long walks
Hmm.....nothing? Ok,the WiFi was not very good, but dont go to this beautiful island to use Internet.

Located right on the beach in a spaciously set up of bungalows. This is back to basic with a small business where the staff will try their best to make your stay as nice as they can. They can help you with tours etc if you want too. It is a fair walk away from town but it is also nice and quiet because of that.
Dinner or lunch have to be prebooked, which is in a lot of places. Wifi gets turned off all the time so you will have to ask them to turn it on/plug it in again.

This is a great place for its very chilled and friendly atmosphere and the fish and seafood suppers amazing!
All the staff were helpful and friendly and the owner genuinely committed to making our stay the best, helping with travel and diving arrangements as well as visiting local communities. You have to experience the Tuk tuk for travel ;-) Thank you everyone!
The only reason some of my answers are a "no" is that the photos didn't show how rustic the place and facilities are. However they were always clean and served the purpose (with tepid showers a relief really!), but all in all, was good value for the money. Be aware it's down one of the - usual- unmade roads and a short tuk tuk ride to the town.

Nice breakfast served by Karibu. :-) I have got fruits, pancakes, ginger tea, eggs,... With the most beautiful ocean view. They make delicious veggie burgers, nice seafood, etc.
Beautiful local bungalow - super clean. Cleaning ladies came 2 x a day to my bungalow to prepare room for my comfort. Very nice staff, always smiling, helpful. Owner Mussa is a great person. Highly recommend this place.

We stayed in a basic, yet very nice bungalow. The place is right by the sea and just a comfortable little beach paradise. Musa is a fantastic host and knows and organizes pretty much everything you would need during your stay at Mafia. Also the entire team was very kind and made us feel at home from the moment we arrived.
If we come back, we will defenitely stay here again.
