Hotel Astoria

Convenient location, south of the river, a short walk from the train station, and easy access across the historic bridges to the old town on the north bank of the river. The hotel has roof top bar and ground floor Asian restaurants.

The hotel looks good, but on closer inspection, it is a budget hotel. Room has coffee machine with disposable paper coffee cups (not ceramic cups). Bathroom has insufficient towel hooks. The shower holder is basic, falling off the wall, not hotel quality. If it rains, the hotel will sell you an umbrella.

La chambre était basique. Pas digne d’un 4 étoiles. Pas de mini-bar. Le personnel ne parlait pas un seul mot de français à la réception alors qu’on est en Suisse !

Location plus adequate service

The room was very modern, spacious, and generally very clean, the bed was very comfortable, and the air-con was great. The location was fantastic, right in the heart of the city and only a very short stroll to both the station and the waterfront.

We've stayed in rooms with open concept bathrooms before without issue. However the layout of our room meant that the bathroom light wasn't isolated – meaning if you wanted to get up in the night to use the bathroom, you either had to do it blind or fill the entire room with light, which isn't ideal if sharing with others. The "gym" was essentially a bunch of machines in a basement storage cupboard and absolutely stank of musk. If you're looking at booking because of the Penthouse bar, then don't – the night we went up, the outside rooftop wasn't even open, so something to bear in mind. This is also the first hotel I've ever been to where they HAVE umbrellas but don't lend them out to guests – you have to pay 10 Swiss Francs to BUY them. Despite having our credit card details should an umbrella go missing. Not exactly the peak of hospitality. Overall we found the the hotel generally quite cold with a pretentious atmosphere. We'd try somewhere else next time.
