We had the coziest, loveliest Christmas at The Squirrel's Nest. A well-appointed cabin, in a fantastic location, with a responsive and helpful host made our vacation a dream. The wood stove kept things warm. The kitchen had all we needed for making our Christmas feast and treats. Smooth connection to wifi and TV made it easy to watch our Christmas movies. We brought games, but there are a bunch in the cabin as well. And it is right across the street from the lake. Our host provided everything we needed and was very responsive to our questions and gave great instructions for everything. We will definitely be back!

We had a great stay at this cozy and charming spot. Listing was accurate and the host couldn’t have been nicer. Bed was really comfortable and the house was sparkling clean. Refreshing and fun to stay somewhere with so much classic Tahoe charm.

We loved the location of this adorable cabin. Very close to the lake! Definitely very rustic but quaint. Would consider new downstairs soft furnishings soon. My 5 year old loved the loft! Thank you! ♥️

Two old college friends meet on Sweet 16 weekend to watch basketball, make a few wagers and talk about old times. This was the perfect place. A great neighborhood where the snow at some street corners was 22 ft. Snow removers came and had to clear away the snow so people could see the street signs. Mary's cabin is cozy, sleeps 2-3 and very close to the lake (i think but the snow impeded our view). I plan to stay there again, perhaps this summer and use it as a base camp for some fly fishing excursions into the high Sierras.

A very cozy cabin with the perfect location close to Donner Lake! We really enjoyed our stay and hope to return.

The Squirrel's Nest provided the perfect little winter getaway for us. The cabin is cozy, close to the lake, and full of charm! I especially love the wood flooring that was reclaimed from an old gymnasium. The open feeling of the upstairs bedroom/loft was a bonus. We went up mid January when there were a series of serious snow storms. We were nervous about the Sonora Pass closing. Mary kept in great communication with us, putting our minds at ease. She was delightful and very helpful! I highly recommend this charming cabin.

The place was clean and full of all sorts of conveniences - pots, pans, dishes, kitchen basics, and sleds! we enjoyed our stay.

Well-stocked kitchen (gadgets, knives, pans, etc.)
Well-populated book and game shelf (even for a child 16-months!)
Cozy home, especially with the wood-burning fireplace—which is elevated so it was safe from above-mentioned toddler hands!
Easy entry. Quick and helpful communication from owner.
Washer & dryer in-home very useful.
Queen and twin(?) trundle beds upstairs loft (nice and warm; soft mattress; view of lake through trees)
Queen in bedroom (able to fit Pack-n-Play beside the bed)
Even had a handful of adult and toddler-sized hats & gloves.
Walking distance to park with playground & lake access. Short drive to downtown Truckee and Sugar Bowl.
Perfect getaway space for us—and toddler LOVED practicing on the carpeted stairs.
Would recommend and definitely stay again! Squirrel!

We enjoyed out short stay at Mary's house. It had a traditional rustic mountain feel and was located in a good dog walking neighborhood. Mary was easy to communicate with and responded quickly. We'll be back in the spring.

Local get away
We loved Donner Lake! Walking, hiking, water fun, fresh air and relaxation! I have always wanted to use the public docks and they are fantastic for sun, water fun, fishing (next time) and lunch! The cabin is in a great location and you can tell this is a very special place to the owners. Lots of personal treasures and touches. One day we had rain and cool weather and the cabin was so cozy! We used the BBQ, great coffee maker & grinder with brought coffee beans, front porch to play cards and even a DVD from the collection. My only suggestion is a very nice dusting to be done.

Donner Lake gem
The location was perfect. Easy access to Donner Lake, the town of Truckee and Interstate 80. Wonderful setting in the tall pines - peaceful and virtually no traffic for early morning walks. Mary (the owner) was remarkably responsive to any questions, both prior to arrival and during our stay. We would definitely stay there again.

This is a beautiful little cabin in a great location. The high ceiling and huge windows made the place feel much bigger than we expected. It’s a convenient walk to the beach and a short drive into Truckee. We had a great time and highly recommend it.

We spent a couple of days at the cabin and all in all enjoyed our stay. It was cold, so the wood stove came in very handy, lots of wood provided. As is always the case with A frame cabins, the temperature differential upstairs and downstairs is something to be navigated. The kitchen was well stocked and plenty of extra supplies were provided. Wi-Fi worked well. No lake views, but a short walk to the lake and beach area.
The only negatives were that the place could use a deep cleaning, the heavy traffic areas are fine, but lots of dust and webs in other places. Also, the moldy caulking around the tub takes away from an otherwise nice bathroom.

Cozy and comfortable home in great location. We had high winds and snow the last few days and everything worked great. Lots of little thoughtful touches like tissue, hand lotion and plenty of wood and even fire starters. Kitchen a little dated but everything you would need to prepare great meals

This house is great and I love seeing the Blue Stellar Jay’s flying around. We also rode our e-bikes around the neighborhood and around the lake. It was nice sunny weather (with snow still on the ground).

The property was exactly as described. Warm, cozy and inviting. The layout was great for our family and we had firewood, games and a decently appointed kitchen. We enjoyed our winter stay and would love to try it again in the summer months. Our only issues were with the many lamps that were either broken or burnt out, so lighting was an issue and with the thick layer of dust on the decor and ceiling beams. I would also suggest an upgrade to the living room couch and chair as they are well past their prime. Otherwise a great cabin in a beautiful area of the world.

There are so many good things about this home that I have to stoop to nickpicking, which is great!
Pros:
- Mary gave great detail about check-in and issues we might face during the snowfall.
- easy to find (in daylight! Street signs are small)
- decor and layout are cozy and lovely
- the most well-stocked kitchen I've ever encountered in my years of vacation rentals
- bed was comfy
- every appliance worked and water got hot quickly
- lots of thoughtful little touches, like lotion, spare gloves, birthday candles, etc.
Cons:
- 2 of the 3 downstairs exterior doors will let you exit while locked so be very careful not to lock yourself out!
- a couple of light bulbs were out in lamps. Property manager might want to keep closer tabs on that.
- if you want your toes to stay warm downstairs, you'll need to use the heater and the fire combined. Upstairs will be tropical, of course.
- the hallway in front of the bathroom is narrow. Careful of the cabinet pulls!
Overall, very happy with the Squirrel's Nest! Thank you for a lovely stay!
