The slow cooked lamb shoulder was amazing.i really liked how the hotel's history is woven into the Maori/Pakeha context. Staff were brilliant.
Our room opened onto a common internal courtyard, which was quite noisy from the extraction fans from tge kitchen (I think).

Dinner was delicious! Exceptional food.
There was nothing we didn't like about the accommodations. It was a wonderful hotel.

Staf were excellent, and let us check in at 2.15pm. The Duke's 3pm check-in is late compared to some motels we have stayed in, so this was appreciated.
We booked a queen room with a balcony. The balcony was a deck, with no privacy and the deck needed a clean.
Balcony suggests privacy - just saying. $190 for a small queen room is average Value For Money.
We also had an air con unit going outside our room quite loudly - we were in room 108 I think.
We also discovered during a recent stay (on another occasion) that the key to the back door is a skeleton key for other rooms, after we accidentally opened a room by mistake We let reception know.

Beautiful, historic location with a great backstory. Great gym and close to nice cafes, walks and watersports
The food was mediocre.

Didn’t have breakfast due to a lack of options on the menu, average selection and found it difficult to find a staff member.
Rooms were really nice and dinner was great

great location in Russell. Well maintained old hotel with excellent staff. Rooms are very small but comfortable. Food in the restaurant is good with lots of seating for chatting with friends. Parking is free and very convenient in a reserved lot across the street.
Rooms very small.

Classic hotel located on the shore in historic Russell. Outstanding evening meal. Convenient parking across the road from the hotel.
The public areas bar, restaurant are a disappointment - we were here 30 years ago and the patio now seems to have become the focus for guest dining. Smart TV not available so no Netflix or TVNZ Plus.

The wonderful ladies at reception exceeded our expectations in terms of friendliness and helpfulness! When we were stuck without a ride to Omata estate they organised it so one of them dropped us off. We were absolutely delighted at this kind and totally unexpected gesture. You ladies made our trip!
The restaurant. The food was terrible, no other way of putting it. Very expensive- fine dining prices, for very average food.
The price of the room was also a little disappointing. When I booked, I chose a Superior room for 2 people. It was tiny. Another member of our party booked the same room, but for 1 person and he was given a much larger room which made no sense.

My first breakfast was a little cold and my eggs way undercook. Rest of time it was good
Slightly bigger portions of food otherwise had a lovely stay

We were in an internal courtyard facing double room which was fine.
The staff were friendly. We were there for a family wedding and it was busy and they managed everything well.
The breakfast closing at 10.00am on a holiday weekend was odd - we ended up having to have breakfast outside both days.
There was no privacy (our room faced an internal courtyard), as the curtains needed to be either open or shut - there was no film curtain which you could use to get light but still have some privacy.

The Duke’s big breakfast was great!
Given it was a superior room the bed was tired, flat and uncomfortable

Great, character accommodation in a beautiful spot.
Very difficult to order lunch as the bar code system didn't work.

Everything was beautiful and it’s such a special location! The food was outstanding highly recommend the shared lamb platter it was the best lamb we have ever had.
The only negative in the room was the air con is too loud and too strong and the shower head needs improving it was quite harsh

Asked about bathroom fan being on 100%, reception said they would notify maintenance to look into issue. Heard nothing further with fan being on all night, affecting our sleep. very annoying as only issue with stay.

The Duke is a well restored heritage hotel and accommodation of the era. Whilst being modernised it retains and oozes charm with a majority of its original features remaining. This place packs a punch with its colourful background and back-stories. Represented through art and artefacts throughout the common areas.
My room was large, well furnished and comfortable, looking directly out to the beachfront, with a private balcony. The lush Pohutakawa coastal trees, and the lapping of the waves on the beach...setting the scene. All well equipped and provided for. It is not a high-end super niche boutique place to stay. Rather well appointed, comfortable and welcoming - whilst being a boutique stay.
The Russell / Kororareka area is steeped in history of first European settlement, the significance of the interactions and engagement with local Maori. And the pathway taken to what became New Zealand / Aotearoa
There was nothing I didnt like here. You are staying in a historical icon, it is old. Remember that when you may hear the odd conversation or person passing your room.
