The traditional style, location and how welcoming staff was. We loved experiencing a traditional Ryokan accomodation. You have your own tea set in the room and your beds are folded. We could hear the soothing river from the room. They allowed us to keep our luggage both before check in and after check out until we went back from Narai the next day. The bed mats can be a bit thin, but it was ok for one night.

The owners were truly lovely and incredibly kind. The lady showed us everything and personally accompanied us to our room. The bathrooms were very clean, and the shower area was spotless as well. The location was perfect after completing the Nakasendo Trail, especially since we were continuing our journey afterward. The room had everything we needed, and tea was provided. We did not eat at the ryokan, so I cannot comment on the food. Overall, the owners were very welcoming and kind, and the location was convenient for our journey.

One thing that would have been helpful is mentioning in advance, including by message, that payment must be made in cash. I understand that many things in Japan are paid for in cash, but it is always better to make this clear beforehand. The price also felt quite high considering what was included, especially since breakfast and other meals were not provided. Unfortunately, the pillow was extremely uncomfortable, making it impossible to sleep properly, and it also smelled damp.
