We stayed in a two-bed unit and it was perfect for our family of four (two adults and two kids). Obviously the units had been recently and very well renovated. New kitchen, new bathroom, new carpet! The kitchen was kitted out with everything ( it even had a rice cooker), the only thing missing was a bread knife. Lovely fluffy towels and lots of them. The gardens were very beautiful and in full bloom. Little playground for the kids was a bonus, so was the BBQ area.

If it hadn’t been for the disappointing service, I would have rated this motel a 10. On our arrival at the mentioned check-in time of 2pm, we were met with a locked reception door and a rude sign saying “No checking in before 3pm”. As we were only staying two nights, so we were eager to make the most of Kaikoura. Upon hearing us talking, the owner poked his head out of the garage to tell us that they were behind on the cleaning. What’s most upsetting is the bluntness and lack of welcome - we were essentially being told off for arriving on time! So we went to lunch and came back an hour later. This was not a good first impression. The second incidence of rudeness happened when the other owner entered our unit whilst we were out. My five year old son - who had not wet the bed for months by the way - had a little accident during the night. There was no waterproof cover on the single beds so the electric blanket got wet too. Upon our return from whale watching, we were met with a blunt “It’s wet through and going to cost you $50 to clean it”. I mean, I’m actually fine paying that as I understand it’s not considered ‘normal cleaning’, but what bothers me is that the request for new sheets didn’t come from us and that she’d gone in without our permission. After all, this isn’t a hotel and we expect a certain amount of privacy.
