A beautiful building and the annexe rooms are nice too, but lovely to walk back into the main building for the bar and restaurant

There’s nothing not to like

An attractive hotel from the outside - not so much on the inside. Handy for our trip on the Great Central Railway commencing at Rothley Station The outside patio and gardens are well kept and it was nice to sit there for a drink.

Please be aware that the hotel has pet friendly rooms which are not shown when booking. We were in the annex and our room smelt of damp dog on arrival and on asking at reception it was confirmed that it was pet friendly room. It was "refreshed" by the staff which lasted until bedtime .... and then the smell returned even though we had our window open at it's maximum. The whole annex needs updating - the minimum being a coat of paint ! The room itself was shabby BUT clean. The breakfast room is dark and dingy although of course full of history. Unfortunately we felt that the full English breakfast was mostly deep fried. There was a good choice of cereals, pastries yoghurt and fruit. The coffee was poured out of a flask by the staff, the dining room was very busy and most of the guests spent time trying to attract the attention of staff for a refill or fetching it themselves. Coffee in a pot / flask on each table would save the staff time and energy
