The staff was very friendly and helpful. The hotel was beautiful and kept to the original 1898 timeframe. Attention to detail.

Need grab bars in shower. I am home now and can take a shower

Very friendly staff. Free delicious cookies in the afternoon. Elevator is not easy to get in and out of, because it’s very old. Location in historic downtown is great. Fee parking.

Older building with lots of history. We were in the second building, second floor, up a staircase. Had problems with the TV, but the front desk responded quickly. Wife (who is very short) had problems getting onto the tall bed. Good place to stay for the Durango to Silverton train ride.

Lovely room, quiet, but wish it had more amenities in the bathroom. (tissues, said etc.)

The hotel was lovely and the service was excellent. There was a musty odor as we approached the checkin desk that was unpleasant which was a bit distracting. The room was well kept and very comfortable beds. Our room was right on the Main Street so it was very noisy with traffic and we could hear our neighbors next door so earplugs were necessary to sleep. Overall lovely hotel and full of nostalgia.

Everything was great except we went out to enjoy the night life and when returning to the motel we were locked out. Rang the buzzer for 30 minutes before someone let us in.

We stayed the night here while we played Santa and Mrs Claus for Noel night. Friendly staff and lovely historical decorum

The value was not very good for the amount charged for this stay. I expected much more for the cost. This property is mediocre at best.

My wife and I had previously stayed at the more upscale, period Strater Hotel nearby and loved it, but never this more affordable,19th Century gem. We'll definitely be back. The beautiful lobby with attached library and sunny sitting rooms charms you the instant you walk in and the the friendly, helpful staff who greet you further your sense of satisfaction and ease. Stepping into our room was like going back in time (aside from the very adequate, wall-mounted flat screen TV). The bed was super comfy, there was plenty of storage and we enjoyed a very quiet, comfortable night. The free, hot breakfast was a nice surprise (although no protein was available). My only caveat concerning this property - the elevator is ancient and very small, barely accommodating two people and two suitcases. It's also a bit of struggle to get in and out of, requiring you to open a heavy door and pull back a metal, accordion style gate. Coffee is always available on each floor and in the lobby, where you'll find free cookies as well. Oh, and free, off-street parking is included with your stay. This really is a delightful place, full of character, comfort and charm.

Beautiful old hotel in great condition, right smack in downtown Durango, CO. Lots of activities and restaurants to walk to. The only negative was the free breakfast. Could have better selections and more room for sitting and eating. The young man attending to the breakfast was not very interested in his job, I.e., cleaning, taking care of food, etc.

I just loved the western nostalgia and the warm cozy room. I would definitely come back.

Liked the nostalgia of staying in this historical, 1890's, hotel. Conveniently located too. Note: beds comfortable, however, be sure to pull them away from the wall before sleeping as any movement causes banging on the wall, therefore, occupants got woken up often.

Loved the history and background. Great location. Very comfortable. The old style elevator was interesting but a real pain.

One of the best hotels ever! Classic hotel, immaculate, excellent breakfast - five stars all around.

Great location. Comfortable. Friendly staff. Felt like we stepped back in time.

Front desk staff was excellent. No housekeeping during a four day stay unless requested. When I requested housekeeping, I got a pile of towels and the garbage emptied. No communication regarding separate building, second floor, no elevator. No breakfast one morning due to cook being ill, daily charge was refunded. Toilet required maintenance. Room heat functioned when it pleased. Not terrible in October but could be an issue in December! Wonderful for access to Durango-Silverton railway and historic Main Street.

This hotel as built in 1898 and it has preserved it’s history yet has modern amenities

General Palmer was charming. We loved the location and the ability to walk around downtown and be right beside the train. The town of Durango was beautiful and family friendly. We were disappointed when we arrived because we were looking forward to actually staying in the hotel. No one informed us until we arrived that our family would be staying in a hotel room outside of the hotel in a side building. The breakfast wasn’t the greatest either. We wish they would have provided different choices but has the same meal every morning but re-named the dish.

We love visiting Durango and usually stay at the Strater for sentimental reasons. We tried The General Palmer this trip and loved it! Much quieter, brighter and a hot breakfast! Generous room size and updated bathroom with a tub. Convenient location near the train station. Front desk staff was very friendly and helpful. We’ll be back.

When I arrived in my room I tried to set the thermostat
to higher temp because I felt cold. I spent about 30 minutes
trying to figure out the wall thermostat which seemed simple enough
with temp displayed and up and down arrows. But it did not seem to have
the desired effect. Then I discovered that in addition to the TV
remote there was another remote on the table. It had temperature
readings, and it did have an effect when used. I asked the next morning
about what was going on and was told the wall thermostat had been disconnected.
I told the receptionist that it would be a good idea if they put a label
on it that it was disconnected, and got the response "Yes, that would be
a really good idea". But I did not see that he made a note about it
which I have seen in other hotels when I point something out.
No fridge in room. No handheld shower.

Picked this hotel due to its location and the historical wow factor. Great free parking in the centre of town and next to the railroad station which can be noisy but only at certain times, so wasn't a problem. The beautiful part of the building is really only the lobby. We stayed across the parking lot in the 'Palace' section, which is a palace in name only. Room was ok but we were right next to the main door into this are and by the ice machine so it was very noisy and the walls in the room are really thin so we could clearly hear the conversation and worse from the room next door. Breakfast offering was ok but the waffle machine was clogged up and unclean and the dirty dishes remained stacked up from other users and was a mess. Often found group of staff smoking on the steps into the building so overall it was a disappointing experience and I would not stay here again. Overpriced for what you get and there are better places we've stayed at in Durrango. Even on check out there was only one person there and they were on the phone so I was asked to leave my email address to send my receipt to - I had to remind them to do this several days later. I had hoped for so much more and the great parking and free coffee and cookies in the lobby were appreciated but overall it's a no from me. I would not recommend it.

We arrived in the middle of a rainstorm and went to the front desk to check in. The employee said you will be in the back building around 100 ft, behind the main hotel, as we are fully booked. I had reserved this Hotel for a King Suite 2 months prior. We then had to carry our luggage up two flights of stairs in the rain. My wife has had hip surgery and could barely make it up these stairs.
Once we got in the room we realized it was very small and old and had a double bed.
The next morning we cancelled the remaining 2 nights and left town. This was a terrible experience and they expected us to pay the full price for a terrible room which was about $300. This is horrible customer service!

Worst hotel I’ve ever been in. Would not get in elevator and could not do stairs. We only stayed one night and left. The room was so small we could not turn around in it. Awful hotel

Beautiful hotel. Needs some updates. Our room had no outlets next to the bed. 300 rooms are located in the main building. 9 rooms are in separated building and has no elevator. Service was great.

We loved our room in a deluxe King room. It was very clean, comfortable, accommodating in every way. We especially loved the location. The General Palmer is in walking distance to great restaurants on Main Street and the Durango/Silverton train. Ample parking, safe, happy we stayed here!

I loved the three outdoor verandas. The views are spectacular.

When you book with Experian you get the rooms without an elevator. Not a problem for us but was a bit of a surprise. Nice hotel in great location.

Downtown location convenient to restaurants, shopping, and train station.
