A different experience, room in Thatched Cottage rather than Castle itself, we were only guests staying, so very quiet and peaceful location, just continental breakfast with limited range other than several fruits. A memorable experience but not a luxury experience befitting luxury price.

Let’s get it straight, this is not 4 star, in fact it’s not a hotel, a b&b at best, I booked a superior room with private bathroom, it was only private because no one else was staying in the neighbouring room (yes it was in the hallway) In the 2 nights I stayed, I never received a key for the room Breakfast is not until 8:30, and I’m told it’s just toast and cereal It has massive potential, but needs massive investment to get it there. Would be a great episode of the Hotel Inspector!!

I stayed only the 1 night of 2 booked. Upon arrival I found the reception area, rang the bell and was given a friendly slightly harassed welcome. I was shown to my room which on opening the door had not been made up, I was then shown to another room which had not been made up, third time lucky I was given a made up room. The cleanliness of the room was disturbing, carpets that needed a serious vacuum not just a quick go over, skirting and edges that hadn’t seen a hoover in a long time. The shower had black droplets hanging out of the head and the sealant had all seen better days. I didn’t have a shower. The bed crunched every time you moved. The telly didn’t work as no batteries in the remote, I got it so far but needed the remote. Just the nature of the property this one but you could hear everything from the person upstairs. Onto breakfast, lumpy off milk, strawberries that were discoloured and off, no hot water for tea, no standard breakfast tea bags in the tray, hard bread. Just awful. I got a cup of tea from my room and had that with a slice of toast. No one ate well that morning. It is staggering that none of this was noticed by the lady. I stay away a lot due to work and see a lot of hotels this was by far from start to finish the worst I’ve stayed in. I’m sure in its day it was wonderful as the setting and surrounds are great but it really has seen better days. I will not go back or recommend.

On reaching the hotel, there was no one around so had to wait. We were shown to where breakfast was going to be laid out, and told everyone eats outside in this weather. We were shown to the room and told the key would be on the bed, no sign and we did ask a few times throughout the stay. The bedroom and linen had seen better times . TV was so small and if you managed to view you were an expert. Bathroom area was small and to get a steady flow out of the shower was a struggle. We went to breakfast! Strawberries looked as they had been there a while and were rotten. The milk the same and was full of lumps and the smell horrendous. The bread had obviously been laid out a while as it was hard. One guest was trying to get a cup of tea and ended up going back to her room for one. Another walked in and just walked away. Absolutely disgusting! After this we packed up , made an excuse and left. We did not stay a 2nd night. How people have given this 10 out 10 amazes us. As the other client said you won't stay and managed to get another hotel. Would not recommend until major changes have been completed.

This is a magical place to stay. The remaining part of the castle, the gatehouse, is where our room was, and in fact we had use of a significant part of that building which is around 700 years old. We had a huge 4 poster bed which was very comfortable, and our own bathroom across the landing. We had access to the grounds which contain a chapel with 6th century origins. Some of the administration was not quite as perfect as we would have liked, but please persevere, as we did, and you will have a wonderful experience. A good continental breakfast was included. If you want to sleep in a genuine castle with a four poster bed, then you will struggle to find anywhere as good as this, and certainly not at this very reasonable price.

Lovely environment, beautiful garden, friendly and helpful staff, I thoroughly enjoyed my three nights stay here. For anyone who love and would like to indulge themselves in history, this IS the place!
