Perfect location in Union Square zone. Free breakfast included. Staff was really friendly. The private bedroom with bathroom I shared with my daughter was really nice. We store our luggage during a two day trip to Yosemite without any problem or cost. Price was unbeatable for San Francisco.
Everything met my expectations, considering that it's a hostel, not a hotel.

Can't say enough good things about this hostel. I left a more detailed review for another set of dates that I stayed here. It's clean, desk staff and housekeeping staff are wonderful, the location is very central to lots of fun things and the rates are great. Stay here if you can! It's got a great vibe!

I've stayed here several times. It is truly one of the best hostels I've ever stayed in. Desk staff is friendly and very helpful, with lots of helpful tips for getting around the city. The place is super clean! Considering that there are several shared hallway bathrooms and shower rooms and so many people using them, the place remains pretty impeccable. I always see the housekeeping staff cleaning! Well done! And they are always very kind and cheerful. The location is very central to many other parts of the city. You do need to be careful as parts of downtown are sketchy to say the least. Just be aware of your surroundings is my best advice. The hostel itself is EXTREMELY safe with their locked front door and 24 hour desk staff. And there are also parts of the area that are perfectly fine and easy to walk around. San Francisco is a wonderful city! Recently, I very absent mindedly left my backpack in the lobby for about 30 minutes. I rushed back for it and it had been put behind the desk. I don't recommend forgetting such a thing, as I did :D but if you are going to leave behind something important, chances are it will will be there at this hostel. Of course no one can guarantee such a thing, but it was my experience! I highly recommend this hostel! Thank you Hostelling International Downtown!

Love the location. It's near public transportation. Powell station is the nearest if you come from the airport.
Breakfast is enough for me.
The kitchen is clean and there is free water, tea and coffee.
The bedroom and bathroom are clean.
Check in and check out are easy.
The staff is kind, polite and friendly.
I don't use the lounge because i always go back late.

the staff were incredibly friendly and helpful, the included wifi and breakfast was extremely appreciated.
ammenities were a bit outdated, but the showers were hot and they were kept relatively clean.

they were doing so much renovation that started at 7:30am every morning. they are very loud rooms keep up all night from street noise and that’s on level 6

The staff was very nice and friendly, the room itself was comfortable with cleanliness maintained and fresh towels every other day. The location is decent, but it's right at the edge of Tenderlion which isn't the safest area and coming back at night to this hostel wasn't the safest experience. But for the most part, it was alright, and I liked that it was close to shops and transport. The shared facilities were also kept clean which was really good and I had a comfortable stay.
I think there was a problem with the cage under my bed (lower bunk), it would get stuck all the time, and when I forced it out, it would snag against the bed mesh base and create a lot of noise. My roommates were very nice people who understood the problem, but it still wasn't nice that everyone would get disturbed by it. The flooring and toilet/bathroom door creaked a lot too, which made it difficult to move, or use the toilet when everyone else was asleep.

Hostel was very quiet. But oh the street noise and honking when the day commenced.

the property is clean, good for solo travelers, and has all of the thing you need.
showers could be a bit better and the toilet window should be open :)

Like other HIs I've been, it is always clean, comfortable and the amazing staff tops it all off
