Region: A E Housman once wrote that Shropshire was “the quietest place under the sun” and today the county remains something of a rural idyll, recognised as one of the least crowded and most peaceful regions in England.

Town: The pretty market town of Ellesmere with its Tudor, Georgian and Victorian buildings quietly nestles between the Shropshire Meres and the well-known Shropshire to Llangollen canal, in an area renowned as Shropshire's Lakeland. Steeped in history and originally fortified as an Anglo-Saxon settlement, this peaceful town boasts a lovely church with a 15th century roof and was home to Thomas Telford during the building of the canal network in the late 18th century. The town also boasts a good variety of shops, pubs and restaurants, as well as an abundance of entertainment on and around the meres in the surrounding area. Stroll through Cremorne Gardens, go fishing or boating, take some time to explore Colemere Country Park with its wonderful wildlife and scenic walks, or walk along the canal. A lovely location offering something for everyone at any time of year.
