Heron's Hideaway - Davis Canal fishing dock & kayak launch - dog friendly
About this house rental
Nestled on a private waterfront lot, Heron’s Hideaway has three bedroom, two baths and a backyard that in the evenings lights up like a movie set. This family friendly home is located just a quick bike ride away from the beautiful beaches of Oak Island, restaurants, shopping and groceries. It features a fenced-in yard large enough to keep any pup happy and entertained. Watch the sunset from the fishing pier as you listen to the shrimp jump and the sounds of the tide flowing in and out. Launch kayaks from the floating dock and explore the quiet, serene, wildlife-filled Davis Canal where the blue herons fly overhead. Use the crab pot or cast out a few fishing lines to catch your own dinner - and don’t forget to ring the bell when you make your big catch. Enjoy yourself under the shady oaks of the large backyard. Put an umbrella in your drink and grab a book as you relax on the back deck. Rest on the hammock swing hanging on the crooked oak tree - it is the perfect place to enjoy a cup of hot coffee in the morning as you look out over the canal or stargaze with the fireflies in the evening. Roasting marshmallows over the built in bonfire pit is the perfect end to a relaxing day spent exploring Oak Island. With plenty of room to spread out or get together for a family dinner, this house is truly a great home away from home. Heron's Hideaway is waiting for you! Special note for boat owners: The dock and floating Roll and Ride shown in the photos can certainly support canoes, kayaks, John-boats and small fishing boats up to 14ft long/8ft wide/2k lbs that can be used in shallow water. Please be advised at low tide the canal can get as shallow as 2-3 feet. Having said this, there is ample space in the 100ft long driveway to park your boat trailer and drive to one of the many boat launches all over the island. You can quickly be out on the ICW (inter coastal waterway) which gives you water access to the Atlantic Ocean, Lockwood Folly River, Southport or Baldhead Island. NOTE: As of 4/1/23 from Apr-Sept Oak Island has implemented parking fees, similar to our neighboring beaches, from 9 am-5 pm for all beach parking. NOTE: there are two security cameras—one in the front yard and one in the back yard.

Our stay at Heron's Hideaway was spectacular. The home was perfect as were the outdoor amenities. The pictures are accurately reflective of the property and we wanted for nothing. The home is very spacious as well as the outdoor living. Our lab loved the fenced in yard as did we. It was still too cool for us to thoroughly enjoy the dock and kayak's, but plan to come back when we can. You cannot go wrong renting here, close to everything. Dawn and Tommy great to work with.

We arrived at night, so it wasn't easy to see. The biggest "suggestion" I have, which relates to the key in the lockbox, is to get another lockbox. There were no lights on the porch, and no matter how we entered the entry code, the box would not "pop" open. We spent 15 minutes in the dark, attempting to open the box and get the key. When we left, we had the same problems.
The owner said we could leave it at another location for the cleaning crew. Phew!
Other than that, WOW! We had a fabulous time; everything was clean, and the kitchen was amazing! All the beds were comfortable, and we were comfortably warm. There was ample wood for our night's out by the fire ring, and the birds were everywhere.
Another thing: we had to switch bedrooms, as the back bedroom's main rug, while beautiful, was flipped up. It had been taped down, but that did not keep the carpet down, and I tripped over it several times. So, we blocked off that room.
Besides the beautiful location, the owners were right there and promptly addressed our issues. They were professional, polite, kind, and extremely pleasant. We had a great, relaxing time at Heron's Hideaway!
Thank you!!

I took my parents on a little trip to celebrate their 45th wedding anniversary. Dawn and Tommy were so amazing from the start. The house was absolutely beautiful and perfect for us. The accommodations were amazing with the cutest little touches. We fished off the dock and hit the beach daily. We also cooked out and hung by the fire pit in the evenings. I would recommend to all of my friends and family!!!

We all thoroughly enjoy our week long stay at Heron's Hideaway. The mornings out on the dock drinking coffee and watching the birds was very relaxing. We enjoyed the fire pit for roasting hot dogs and making smores. The amenities were perfect. The leisure strole to the beach was just right. This was our first time on this end of the island we have previously stayed near the Oak Island pier. Oak Island is a great place to unwind and decompress.

The home was better than we expected! Not only was it well-kept and beautifully decorated, the kitchen had all we needed for the meals we pre-planned. The outdoor campfire sites were wonderful! The owner had plenty of wood available for us to use. The dock and unique outdoor setting made this one of our absolute favorites!!! The decorations inside the home, made us feel like it was not a rental property. The owner was prompt in answering any questions we had. We will definitely consider this home if we go back to Oak Island!

The home was very cozy and we really enjoyed being able to crab, fish, canoe, and grill at the home. We liked that the kitchen was fully equipped and had everything we needed for cooking. We were also able to make s’mores and roast marshmallows, which the kids loved. We would for sure book this home again in the future, the location was in the middle of everything.

Everything was better than we anticipated. The kitchen was very well equipped, everything was clean, the beds were comfortable, truly a top-notch place. We especially enjoyed canoeing on the canal. Our two little doggies enjoyed the fenced in backyard.

We loved this property, it had everything you could possibly want to have a great vacation. The house was beautiful and incredibly clean. There are several places to enjoy the outdoors with and without shade. Kayaks, beach gear, and chairs were available. My personal favorites were the wide variety of flowers, plants and beautiful pieces of art. We will visit there again!!

We loved our time at Heron's Hideway! The location on the canal was perfect. My son and husband fished morning, afternoon and night, and we enjoyed kayaking every day. The house and property are beautiful and had everything we needed. Our dog, Lacey, loved exploring and relaxing in the fully fenced front and back yard. The beach is close by -- 20 minute scenic walk or just a short drive. The owners responded to my questions/emails quickly. We will be back!

The house is beautiful and comfortable. The rooms are perfect to spread out and nap and relax. The living room was comfortable for the whole family. The kitchen was well prepared to cook at home, and we did nearly every meal. The back deck and gardens were sooooo nice. The canoes which we used were great! Just sitting on the dock was wonderful! I would definitely love to come back. And having the laundry there, as a mom, helped me not arrive home with a ton to do. They really did think of Everything. Now I do love seeing the beach at sunrise and watching the ocean, but this really is a very close second to that. And we did see the Hanks and the herons, I didn’t catch any fish or crabs, but they have a great cleaning station if you do. The walk to the beach is easy, you will see many doing it from the neighborhood. If you have a lot of stuff, the drive to the beach and parking is easy too.

Enjoyed. Very meticlous house, deco, and everything about the house/host were just simply on point.

This property is cozy and inviting. Lots of privacy even though neighbors are quite close. The dock on Davis Canal is a real bonus for those who fish and for birdwatchers.
The property owners quickly respond to questions. They obviously love the property, as it is well cared for, and one of them is a gardener :)
Amenities to suit everyone.
We plan to schedule our third stay next Spring :)

This home was very clean, comfortable and had everything that we needed for a two week stay along with the fenced yard which was wonderful for our fur babies. The location is great, close to the Oak Island beaches as well as surrounding beaches. Plenty of shopping and restaurants and the owner was so easy to work with. We would recommend this property to anyone who enjoyed comfort and privacy. Fishing from the dock was fun as well.

We stayed at Heron’s Hideaway for two weeks in late September. I echo the comments of others that the pictures on VRBO don’t do this house justice. It is so cute, and the yard is just gorgeous. I had to work for several days during our visit, as did my daughter. We found the wifi to be strong and reliable. There was plenty of room to spread out. The kitchen was fully stocked. Walk to beach was about 15 minutes, but it was such a pretty walk! Communication with hosts was fantastic — we were there for Hurricane Ian and they were in contact through everything. Can’t say enough about this place. Can’t wait to go back!

I rented this location for my sister and our parents. They had a great time and enjoyed the home. The dock in the back was great - they caught things and cooked them the same day.
I was very busy and was not communicative with the owners, but man are they nice people. They let me know when the house was ready early and were welcoming and let my parents in early. They were very friendly and down to earth in their communications and let us know about a toaster that was being delivered.
Many owners who rent are a bit defensive/offensive in their tone when they communicate with renters, these guys were the best!
My sister and parents had to leave a few days early as we have a serious family illness back home, but they still had a great time at this rental and definitely want to return.

Beautiful home!!! Very clean. My son said we were selling our home and moving to this house. Loved fishing off the dock. Close to the beach and many delicious places to eat. Amazing. 10/10 would recommend.

Relaxing
The home and property were very nice. The fensed in yard is a beautiful garden. There was a new kayak launch at the dock with two kayaks available in addition to the canoe. The two firepits were inviting. The owners are very attentive to any communication.

Favorite place by far!
This house is the best one we have stayed at by far! The pictures do not do this place justice! The house everything you need. Plenty of room for our family inside and out. We throughly enjoyed the dock! Good, quite neighborhood and convenient to stores and restaurants. We can’t wait to stay here again!

House was beautiful.
We didn't like how far from beach it was. And in order to use a golf cart you have to go way out of the way. Other then that we loved the property

We loved our stay here. The area is very quiet and relaxing yet close to the beach. My husband's favorite feature was probably the gigantic tv in the living area! My favorite was the hammock with wind chimes overhead. It overlooked the canal and was a great place to read one of the many books at the house. Our dog's favorite was the fenced in yard where she could explore without being on a leash. The house was only 5 minutes or so from 2 grocery stores and several restaurants and 20 minutes from Southport which was a great place to spend time as well. We hope to stay here again soon.

Perfect place for time to catch up with family
When we opened the front door, it felt like being welcomed into someone's home rather than a cold hotel with standard decor and noisy neighbors. Everything we needed was on site, and the two minor questions we had were answered by the owner within minutes. This was a great opportunity for us to spend time just enjoying time together, the house, fishing, incredible birds, and the fabulous weather.

Perfect spot for a relaxing Spring Break. The house and view are beautiful. We enjoyed walking to the beach and hanging out in the backyard taking in the view. The kitchen is well stocked for cooking meals. Fun was had by the humans and the canine!

Great house in a great location
Heron’s Hideaway is a gem! Easy access to the beach, nice walking, fishing, biking, and kayaking. The house is well stocked with all you need for cooking including a nice gas grill. The dock is perfect for an afternoon of fishing and the deck a great place to enjoy a good book. We highly recommend this rental. Our pups loved it too!

Heron's Hideaway goes above and beyond as a vacation rental, it is clean and comfortable and Dawn and Tommy have thought of everything and more. We did not have enough time to take advantage of all that was offered, however, we did take advantage of the excellent birding from the property. Heron's Hideaway's location on the canal, next to the marsh, next to the ocean, and adjacent to stands of native vegetation provided us with 49 species of birds from the property! The fenced-in yard was perfect for our dogs, the many choices for outdoor seating was perfect for us, and even when the weather was challenging the views from inside were captivating. In the evenings we loved being on the comfortable couch, watching the huge TV and feeling the warmth from the gas log fireplace. The walk to the beach on the 31st St boardwalk over the marsh was exciting every time. We enjoyed Thai By the Sea and Bar-B-Que House for takeout meals, although we could have cooked anything given the well appointed kitchen and Publix was a short drive away for groceries. My favorite object in the house was the tide clock next to the sliding glass door, all the maritime gadgetry was fun. It will be difficult for future vacations to live up to Heron's Hideaway, we hope to return!

We had a wonderful time at Heron's Hideaway. The house is very clean and nicely furnished. We enjoyed fishing off the dock and sitting at the fire pit. We had dinner on the deck with a fire going and the string lights in the backyard turned on. It was a magical setting. The fully fenced in yard was perfect for our dogs and made our time at the house stress free. I would stay here again and highly recommend it.
