The proximity to Circular Quay was a welcome feature. The staff were friendly, helpful and sincere and gave every indication that they enjoyed working at the hotel. The hotel was located in a quiet and respectable area.
Nothing comes to mind.

Location
Construction site directly outside the room , starting work at 630am . Reverse beepers, angle grinders, the works!!!

Location was the best part of the experience, with the relatively cheap cost for that part of town.
Dead and Alive Cockroaches in room, one functioning shower in the three shared bathrooms made available for 14 rooms.

Great Location, near Cruise terminal. Room was clean. Pub downstairs was very vibrant. Staff were helpful and friendly. Not a modern accommodation but quaint !
Common toilet, no lift.

The location is excellent and the staff are friendly and helpful.
The room we stayed in is in some need of renovation - the door to the bathroom would not close as the architrave at the top had bowed outwards (likely due to the building having shifted over the years). Not being able to have privacy in the bathroom without jerry-rigging a temporary doorstop is a bit beyond the pale and really should be fixed. Also, the water temperature for the shower was only just warm enough with the hot tap on max and no cold tap, and the lack of a toilet brush & bars of soap etc in the bathroom was disappointing. Fix those things up and this would greatly improve the experience.

The Location
Everything else! Not the Pub part. the accommodation - whilst this property is very old, we like old, old can be nice, this place is neglected old. the room has peeling paint, rotted door frame in bathroom a whole inch, spa is worn and old and a weird grey colour in the base, shower has the grate over drain missing, you could lose a foot down it. very grotty. sink and toilet clean. Bathroom light decided when it wanted to work or not. very noisy party in from 11.30 am till closing, room is over this so no minute of peace as not double glazed. shouting and screeching all day and night. Pub has nice restaurant but could not reserve a table for Dinner, they dont take bookings, but the party had booked a whole area out, obvs money talks, our little $200 a night is nothing to them, so we went down to the Orient Hotel and had a slap up meal and drinks and a great evening, great staff there too, pity they dont do rooms.

One of male staff were not nice to offer me clean towels when I requested it. Cockroach showed up in my room during the night which freaked me out.

The food in the restaurant is very reasonably priced and has good portion sizes. The Guinness pie is highly recommended.
We had a room with an ensuite, which was huge. The bed was extremely comfy and loved the fact that there were 2 types of pillows ie, a softer feather type and a latex type which was great for my neck.
Fantastic place to stay, we will be back again, next time we come down to Sydney for another cruise.
Thanks again everyone at the Mercantile for your warm hospitality.

Mostly chilled although it’s a pub. love the staff members. Everyone seems lovely. I turned up 2hrs early and the lovely lady at the reception let me check in early as my room was already made for me. I love the location and can’t recommend it enough.

Location was ideal for our Rocks trip. Bedding and towels were very clean. Live music was really good.
Extremely run down. I understand that it is a listed building, however I feel that doesn’t excuse disrepair and dirt. The windows were unbelievably dirty, my partner’s bed was falling apart (base coming away from legs), the wall had big chunks of missing plaster/paint and long cracks in several places in our room. Flimsy door locks in communal bathrooms. Soap/shampoo dispensers dirty.

Friendly staff, helped carry our luggage upstairs. There is such a vibe in this location. Our room was comfortable. Own ensuite. This is an historic hotel and has lots of character. Our bed was comfortable. The room had a portable aircondioner that was adequate. Entertainment was good. Meals were enjoyable. Try the Shamrock pie 🙂 Close to Circular Quay. We walked to the ship for our Carnival cruise. Late check out is available if you ask. Luggage storage is available. Would definitely stay again.
