The Old Bell Hotel

It was a very pleasant stay, great room, facilities, staff and location

Fab place to stay, decor outstanding. We were upgraded and to be honest, i didn't want to go home! Very peaceful, nothing was too much trouble for the staff. Extremely comfortable. Bar area was very nice, very welcoming. Breakfast excellent. Parking was actually ok, which was a surprise given the position of the hotel

Breakfast portions differed a lot from one day to the next.

An attractive hotel with many quirky features.  The staff were friendly and helpful and service was good, apart from breakfast on our second day (more below).  Our room was large and comfortable and breakfast was excellent, with plenty of choice and all hot dishes cooked freshly to order.

Unfortunately, the hotel wasn't up to its 4-star rating.  When we arrived, there was an unpleasant smell of chemicals that pervaded the whole hotel, including the public spaces and our room and we had to open the windows all evening before it dissipated.  The hotel fabric is a little careworn and the stair carpet was threadbare in places, very nearly creating tripping hazards. On our second morning, the breakfast waitress brought us our tea and then disappeared, leaving us waiting to place our orders.  After a considerable wait, my wife found her talking to her friend around the corner. The restaurant's dinner menu was extremely ordinary and unimaginative, so we ate elsewhere.  Luckily there are several places to choose from in and around Malmesbury.
