This is a 300 year old Inn located in a beautiful part of Northumberland. The views from the beer garden are lovely and, on a sunny day, it's a pleasure to sit out and enjoy. There are some lovely walks right on the doorstep. The full English breakfast is large and well cooked. There is a selection of cereals and fruit juices as well as yogurt. The staff are friendly with a special mention to Charles who is an asset to the establishment.
Sadly, this establishment is extremely 'tired' and in urgent need of refurbishment. The carpets are dirty - in some places 'sticky' - and frankly need replacing. When using the electric shower in room 3, you would think a helicopter is trying to land in your room it is that noisy. The water pressure is poor. As mentioned previously, this Inn is 300 years old and therefore you would expect some creaks in the floorboards. The bathroom in room 3 has lots of them. The beer garden, which should be a major feature of this establishment, is also in need of some TLC with old - and in some cases, rotten - wooden bench tables. Old dying or dead shrubs and plants detract from what should be a feature area. From talking to locals and staff, it would appear that the owners have concentrated on the restaurant (the food is good with a ridiculously large menu) whilst clearly neglecting the rest of the business. This establishment has been taken over by new owners only in the last month and therefore there are the usual 'teething' issues when that happens such as supply issues. For instance, whilst having several pasta dishes on the menu, we were informed (only after ordering) that there was no pasta at all. Several other items listed on the menu were also "not available". In a 300 year old Inn, you would expect to have available several real ales on hand pumps. Sadly, there was only one - a local bitter which didn't do it for me. This couple of nights away was a surprise for my wife but, sadly, disappointed as the first thing she saw was a dirty old mattress resting against the wall outside the entrance - followed by the old and dirty carpets throughout. All in all, then, this could (and should) be an excellent place to stay for a short break. A character building nestled in a lovely little hamlet in beautiful Northumberland. Sadly, it currently disappoints for all the reasons stipulated above.
