The Grand Hotel Nanaimo

One of the nicest hotels I have ever stayed in, the room was bright, sparkling, clean, beautifully decorated, comfortable, and absolutely quiet. The continental breakfast was lovely as was the dining room

Ferries cancelled the last sailing of the night. In my desperate attempt to book a hotel. I came across this hotel on Booking.com. I needed a one-night stay. All other hotels downtown were fully booked. I arrived late at the hotel. The door was open, and a lady was waiting for me. She greeted me with a smile and made me feel comfortable the moment I walked in. She was very professional, patient and answered all my questions. She had all of my info online and got my room set up immediately.

It was a one-night stay. There was nothing I didn't like. The hotel itself had a unique decor and an Eastern European vibe. Almost had a Titanic look. If I were to pick one thing, it would be the lack of automation, physical key cards, and registration.

I enjoyed the breakfast, but it is not hot, it is more like a continental style. The staff at this hotel is exceptional. Francine at the front desk, Tanja, Jenny and Stacy ( I hope that I'm remembering her name correctly) go above and beyond. Also, the chef in the restaurant makes the most delicious seafood linguine I've ever tasted. Our room was spotless and the view of the garden through our two large windows on the main floor was beautiful to wake up to. The gardens in the back are relaxing and there are areas where you can sit and read or just relax. This hotel is quaint, cozy and welcoming, and Brad, whom we chatted with, took the time to visit with the guests. We travel a lot, and that just does not tend to happen. By the way, if you want to know the best places to see while you're there, ask the staff - they have the inside scoop! Joanne

The only thing that I can suggest is that the furniture in the foyer is a little uncomfortable to sit on for any length of time. The style of the furniture suits the ambiance of the hotel but needs a little face lift comfort wise.

We were there for high tea the next day, so stayed the night before.

Room size was good, decor was "tired".
