Well supplied cottage on the plains of Kansas.
Close to Tall Grass Prarie preserve...be sure and bring food that you need as you won't find other than basic groceries near by.
If you're over 55, you get a discount on booze!

The place was very suited for our art retreat and we immersed ourselves in the tall grass prairie and rolling hills of early fall.

What a great time! The cottage was immaculate and had everything you need to be comfortable. Immediately behind the cottage is 20+ acres of tallgrass prairie which is amazing. Matfield Green, the town, was quiet except for the train that rumbles through hourly, but it is a good half-mile away and not bothersome at all.
Peace and quiet, and relaxation is abundant.
Cottonwood Falls is a short drive north with alot to see and do. Chase County State Fishing Lake, just west of Cottonwood falls was astounding if you want to hike and see great waterfalls.

We had a really nice stay. It was mostly quiet, except for the trains. We were disappointed to find that the near by restaurant was permanently closed.
The shower was awkward and difficult to use with no good place to put stuff, but otherwise it was great and a very relaxing long weekend.

Such a cute little house. Love the decor!! A peaceful get away for a few days. Wish we could’ve stayed longer. Definitely would recommend this host. Thank you we had a wonderful time

The property was perfect for our needs and and private. Open fields to the east (perfect to watch the sun rise over breakfast) and a Kansas juniper wall to the west to block off neighbors. Very nicely appointed in the kitchen for preparing meals (and you might plan on it since the entire area is very rural. A few nice places in Strong City, Cottonwood Falls and Council Grove, however. One thing to note: there are a lot of freight trains passing by about a quarter mile away. You can hear them though the sound in the house is quite muffled AND since there are no crossings, there are no horns etc. We can hear trainssix miles away in KC and blowing their horns at every crossing, so . . . we did not consider it a problem.

We had such a wonderful stay! The house was even better then I pictured! This was the perfect place for our mini family vacation. The house has everything you could need. We are already planning coming back at the end of the year!

This was our second stay and we enjoyed the quiet setting and the house itself. The only problem was that it was locked when we arrived. We were able to track down someone with a key, but it was an aggravation and we received no apology afterward.

The host has clearly paid attention to every detail in creating a retreat space for introspection, relaxation, and reflection. The simplicity, yet charming comfort of Prarieside Cottage is a welcome delight! Thank you SO much!

Prairieside Cottage is a quaint retreat with a comfy wabi-sabi feel. You will find a treasure of books - may not have time to read them unless you extend your stay - but you can make a nice list of books to look up later. The bed is firm and comfy. The futon - would have to call the owners to know how to work it. The couch would have been comfortable and firm enough to sleep on as well. The cabin out back is one open room and has a desk and worktable. Would be perfect for projects, morning reading, crafting etc., while enjoying the morning serenity, natural light, nature, etc.
Anyway, the house has a wide variety of books, objects d'art, pottery, original art on the walls. Every time we looked around we saw something delightful. I would love to know more about the house, the renovations, the history, who may have lived here, etc.
The property has many native and perennial plants and herbs. We saw a variety of birds and butterflies. Grassy walkway paths surround a clump of wildflowers/prairie plants. Dozens of hummingbirds buzzed around a thistle patch.
A previous reviewer said the house is in need of TLC...this is an old prairie farmhouse. I saw a little weather stripping coming loose on a window. The tub is an old cast iron tub - naturally it is going to show wear and tear but it was clean and will probably last another hundred years. There was nothing that detracted or affected our stay in any way. I expect historic properties to show some wear - and love. This is not a corporate property. Everything was neat and clean.
The house and property are a photographer's delight - and a hiker's delight as there are many trails in the area, the Tallgrass Prairie Preserve and other sites in Council Grove and Cottonwood Falls.

My family stayed at the prairieside cottage recently and loved every minute there. From the well stocked kitchen to the contemporary style to the private location we couldn't have asked for a better house. We will definitely be coming back. That said, if there was one thing that could have been better it would be the communication with the property manager while we were there. There was little information provided about the house from what to do with garbage to who to contact in case of an emergency. Since the cottage is in a fairly remote area it would be nice to feel like someone was available when needed. The house also seemed to be in need of a little TLC. It is just so beautiful I really want it to be taken care of properly :)

Second stay at this edge of the prairie locale. Cottage is spacious and beautiful. Happy to find 2 Bistros in the kitchen for making great coffee. Beautiful dining area lined with square windows framing a prairie view and beautiful sunrises. Great night sky viewing unfettered by city lights. I chose one of the two decks for an opportunity to sleep under the stars. Plenty of space in two seating areas and a great library for relaxing read or visit in the evenings. Found PrairyErth on the shelves alongside many volumes of area specific nature guides and memoirs and essays. Definitely slated for a twice a year pilgrimage. I checked sightseeing as something I recommend this property for...and you have to understand the sights are vast layers of rocky flint shelves, grasses, wildflowers, sky and clouds and stars and the moon..laced with barbed wire fences and gravel roads... and in scattered between are farmhouses, hay bales and cows and horses and yes...the occasional herd goat.

This place is incredible. Stayed three nights but wanted to stay thirty. Decent privacy yet close to many interesting day trips. Great book selection with an atmosphere that literally screams relaxation. Decor is cool and nice and light during the day with unbelievable star gazing at night. Absolutely loved it! Will definitely be back.

I stayed here on an 'art ladies' retreat. Completely wonderful! We were here as the prairie was starting to bloom, lush and green and went out to paint it every day. About the house; we loved the abundant windows (which we opened to the prairie breezes), the light, the views. The library was wonderful as was the fact there was NO TV! (Please don't add any!) Don't miss Ad Astra restaurant in Strong City on your way in or our (or both!) We left rested, refreshed and invigorated. We loved it and have already booked our next stay.

This is our second time staying here and we have really enjoyed it each time. It is really lovely inside and out. the house is adorable, creative, well kept. it has a fabulous kitchen. the deck looks out over the prairie and is sublime in the evening. it is a swell place to stay.

This retreat place was excellent for the view, for the artistic touches, and for the kitchen amenities. Bed was comfortable, dining room had imaginative lighting. Added to the charm were the places where the "old" met the "new," such as a kitchen cupboard and in the bathroom. I rested and was renewed, as I had hoped. There are just few places where renovation is not quite complete, such as the loft, and I am sure these will be added soon! Thanks for this place in which my heart could find itself again!

I stayed at Prairieside Cottage twice in 2014. In the fall my sister and I visited together and had a fabulous time enjoying the house and grounds and exploring nearby sites, especially the Flint Hills/Nature Conservancy location. In December, I returned for a personal retreat and really settled into the cottage for a peaceful time of relaxation and rejuvenation - the beauty and comfort of the house and the surroundings make this an ideal place to get away with others or on your own. The cottage has a fantastic decor, wonderful kitchen; lots of magical places to read, write, draw, take photos, and relax; and everything to make yourself at home. I can't wait to return!

My husband along with our son and his wife spent Christmas week at the Prairie Side Cottage. We had an enjoyable day on Dec.24th in Cotton Wood Falls visiting the western store, the Artists' Cooperative gallery, and and had lunch at the Hotel. We were comfortable in the cottage and enjoyed daily walks around Matfield Green and around the cottage. The porch "dining room"was too cold for our use because of the winter weather, but we brought one of he tables from the studio and set it up in the living area which worked very well.
We enjoyed the extensive house library, played board games, ate and watched Netflix on our computer. It was a time to relax, unwind and catch up with each other's lives in a lovely setting. We returned to Kansas City feeling relaxed and refreshed. We had the thought that it would be a wonderful place to return in the Spring to spend time outside drawing, painting or photography the beautiful country side.

This house is a joy to just be in, with its very clever use of materials, colors, and eclectic design sensibility. Every part of it felt homey and comfortable but exotic at the same time. The glassed in porch was a lovely spot for breakfasts and dinners and watching deer at the edge of the prairie.

This is a magical house with a lovely studio "mini-house" directly behind the main house. It is perfect for artists, writers, and people with kids. The kids will love their very own studio or the adults can use it to write, draw, read or just hide out. The glassed in porch provides a beautiful place to watch the deer run across the meadow. There are two fantastic porches on the back and front of the house. The driveway is cloaked by two rows of trees making the setting very private. Matfield Green is a charming town with endless expanses of green prairie, it is a true jewel to experience.

This place was terrific and well appointed. A beautiful old house located in the middle of town, but with the feeling of being far away from everything. There were amazing hikes, either out the front door, or a short drive away. I loved it!
