Historic Cottage on Ware River Estate
About this cottage rental
Come spend your vacation in this quiet, peaceful setting on the Ware River. This charming and romantic 2 story cottage has hand hewn post and peg construction dating to the 1890's. There are fireplaces in both the living room and bedroom with ceiling fans in the bedroom and on the front porch. Just in front of the cottage is a restored icehouse used to store vegetables and dairy with blocks of ice brought from up north by steamboats down the Chesapeake Bay. The waterfront is a short stroll down our private oyster shell drive and has a pier with a floating dock, table, chairs and fishing gear. This is a perfect spot for watching our beautiful sunsets while enjoying a glass of wine, fishing, crabbing, or launching your canoe or kayak. The Cottage is 1 hr from Richmond or Norfolk, 2 hours from DC, 45 min from Williamsburg, 30 min from Yorktown, and 20 minutes to the Arts and waterman community of Mathews. It provides a great home base for exploring this beautiful and diverse region of Virginia.

Excellent base for exploring Williamsburg, Yorktown and Jamestown. Beautiful historic cottage on expansive grounds. Dead quiet.

We did a short stay over a weekend - the weather was bad so we weren't able to do much in the area, but the host answered all our questions and was very pleasant to work with. We enjoyed our stay!

Lovely accommodations. We felt like we were staying in our personal B&B! Clean and decor quite appropriate for the era. This would have definitely been a 5-star rating if not for the TV situation. We would have liked watching TV at night after our long days of sightseeing. However, you cannot simply watch network TV. So know your passwords for streaming!! Also, if you have ANY mobility issues, you will have difficulty navigating to the bathroom and bedroom which are up high steep stairs. But if you don’t have mobility issues or TV concerns, you will love your stay!

This lovely cottage is about an hour's drive from the Historic Triangle: a little farther than we had anticipated, but this in NO way spoiled our trip! The "Middle Cottage" offered us a place to call "home" from our travels.

The host had everything prepared for our December visit, including holiday decorations and fire laid in the fireplace! The cottage is thoughtfully designed and furnished. The surroundings are peaceful. We did not hear a single car, plane, or siren for our entire stay. And the stars! We would definitely rent this cottage again!

Very relaxing visit. Nice property. Nice owners. Our only issue was with the fireplace, which was more trouble than pleasure. Very disappointing.

This was a perfect place to celebrate our birthdays/anniversary trip since November is our celebration month. Precious house that gave us excellent down time and special memories. We loved every minute!

The cottage was beyond adorable! It was decorated to perfection, and the property was quiet and peaceful. We took many long walks with our small dog who was in heaven!

This beautiful property is the perfect place for a wonderful, relaxing, long weekend. Even our dog, Misty, fell in love with this location. Sitting on the swing reading, looking at the stars, watching the ospreys and herons from the dock, taking long walks, and exploring the area were exactly what we needed. We are looking forward to returning as soon as we can.

We had an amazing stay here I only wish we had more time to fish on the pier and explore more. We plan to return soon. Our 4 year old daughter loved the treehouse and tire swing they had as well! The history of the place is very interesting and the gardens are nice we got to drink our coffee and watch the hummingbirds.

The property is absolutely stunning, with beautiful gardens and access to the Ware River. The Cottage is small and tidy with decorations appropriate to its location. The kitchen is well equipped. Great area with lots to do either on the various rivers or bays or in the quaint small villages. A gem!

We enjoyed staying in this beautiful cottage and having access to the dock a short walk away. Beautiful property with all of your needs.

This is a great old-modern house! The cottage itself is from the 1700's, but it most certainly does not feel like it when you're staying there. All the modern amenities, including super-fast 500MBit/s wifi (yeah, I'm a techie, it matters to me ;] ). The property is gorgeous, access to the dock is a huge bonus, the river is just so peaceful down there. Just thoroughly lovely and enjoyable all around, we'd love to come again.

We had such a wonderful time staying at the Middle Cottage. It is a beautiful quiet property away from the hustle and bustle of things. The owners, John and Sherri, were wonderful hosts and John even took time to tell us about the history of the Glen Roy estate. The cottage is the perfect size for two people and I absolutely loved relaxing on the swing on the front porch. Thank you John and Sherri! We hope to return in the future.

My son and I enjoyed spring break at this beautiful historic property. It was our base to learn about Virginia's colonial history, but we found ourselves longing to get back to the cottage and estate to enjoy the peace and quiet and watch the ospreys down on the river.
The cottage is beautifully maintained and while historic has everything that we needed, including excellent WiFi.
A huge thank you to our hosts for a wonderful spring break getaway.

I was going to sleep on pull out couch , but mattress soiled and old with what appeared to be a blood stain. There was a clipped post mark envelope dated from 2019 on the mattress. I could not sleep there. Friend slept upstairs and I slept on the floor on a blow up mattress. House lovely and beautiful property Linda Whitman

Stunning restoration of original cottage on old Virginia plantation. Lovely interior space, well-appointed kitchen, beautiful grounds by the river, well situated to visit local historic sites. Owners on the grounds and very responsive. Our little dog loved it too!

Small, quaint and quiet, this was a beautiful way to get away from it all for a special occasion. The hosts were kind, the property was clean, and it is a memory that will last. Thank you so much for helping to make our 30th special~!

Quick drives to everything we wanted to do. We also explored the town and enjoyed the local hospitality. Property itself was very nice, exactly as pictured. Perfect fit for our small family.

Again, what a beautiful location and home! This is really a perfect spot for a couple who is celebrating any kind of special occasion. My son and I did have the opportunity to kayak Sunday morning before check out what a delight! On my next visit I really want to take the opportunity to experience everything this location has to offer such as more kayaking fishing and grilling outside.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The house was just right for us and the area was spectacular. It is a great place for walking, relaxing, and porch sitting. We especially enjoyed our after supper walks to the pier to see the sunset.

We truly enjoyed our stay and plan to return next year. The renovations of this historic property, done by the owners, are fantastic. The cottage sits on a beautiful tract of land and access to the pier was an added bonus. The cottage is small, but the space is well thought out and perfect for two guests.

My boyfriend and I had an amazing time at Glebefield. The cottage was perfectly set up and easy to access. Margaret even accommodated my dog who seemed to be the happiest he’s ever been on the property. We brought our own kayak and managed to get my dog to ride in it for the first time. We used the fishing rods and crab traps provided on the dock and were able to catch our own dinner for the evening- Margaret even provided us with a crab steamer from her personal residence.
Amazing time and looking forward to coming back :)

The Middle Cottage showcases the talents of its owners in the beautifully restored property on the Ware River. From the woodwork, to the artwork, the books, beautiful gardens, a dock already outfitted with fishing poles & crab pots, the property and owners, John and Peg, welcome guests to Glebefield. The cottage is the best equipped rental we’ve found: cooking with local produce and seafood was a joy. Our dachshund loved running rabbits in the grassy fields. Launching the kayaks from the floating dock and swimming were refreshing on the hot days. We trailered our Sunfish over to the nearby boat launch to sail.
We look forward to a return visit.

The middle cottage was the best part of our trip. Situated on several acres adjoining a couple of houses on the river it was picture perfect. The cottage was immaculate. Peg thought of everything you needed and then some. It felt like being at home. We enjoyed our stroll down to the river and sitting on the dock watching the sunset. Beautiful rural views. I loved visiting her gardens. So happy I found this place. Thank you Peg and John. Hopefully we will be back

God's beautiful creation comes to full view in this arena of old twisted trees, colorful frames of blooms, and the untouched shores of a healthy river! The cottage was warm, inviting, and exceptionally accommodating. It's design brings in the light and breeze of the outdoors as welcome company while reading or just relaxing by the fire! We are truly thankful for the experience!
