Frequently asked questions

Where Is Belize City?

The former capital, primary port, and largest city in Belize is surrounded on three sides by the Caribbean Sea and is bifurcated by the Haulover Creek. The city is generally divided into the Northside and Southside, containing many small neighborhoods linked by a collection of bridges as three canals also run through the south side of the city.

What Is Belize City Known For?

Belize City, the transportation, judicial, economic, and educational hub of Belize, is served by an international airport, as well as hosting the Supreme Court of Belize. There is an annual Street Art Festival at the end of February, and Carnival is celebrated every September. Belize City is known both for its history and landmarks, as well as the starting point for every other Belizean adventure. The best parts of Belize are outside of the city.

A Quick Guide to Belize City

  • St. John’s Cathedral and House of Culture: Directly behind Government House in Fort George and completed in 1820 using slave labor and bricks brought from Britain, this is the oldest Anglican church in Central America, and one of the oldest buildings in the country. Note the formidable pipe organ inside and the ancient cemetery outside. House of Culture, a two-storey colonial mansion, is also worth a quick visit as it has recently been renovated from its former Government House which housed Britain’s governors of the city until as late as 1996. Its new purpose features many exhibits of Belizean art and history while maintaining the Colonial architecture and gardens.
  • Museum of Belize: Built as a prison during the British Colonial era, the building was renovated into a museum in 2002, and features 3,000 years of Maya history and culture, as well as a thorough overview of the colonial period.
  • Swing Bridge: This famous and well-trafficked bridge is thought to be the last manually operated bridge remaining of its kind in the world today. Though rarely opened, it does still function 100 years after installation. The main thoroughfare connecting both halves of the city is used by everybody daily and - as a note of caution - is said to be the preferred hangout of the area’s many hustlers looking to separate visitors from their belongings. Haulover Creek offers a pretty view downstream of the bridge.

Popular Destinations Near Belize City

  • Ambergris Caye: A true tropical paradise complete with sparkling, soft white sands, and fantastic snorkeling are what this small island right next to the Belize Barrier Reef, the second largest barrier reef on Earth, are known for. Spend the day sailing or snorkeling at Hol Chan Marine Reserve or swimming, kayaking, windsurfing, or bicycling on the island. Only a quick ferry ride from Belize City, many tour operators run trips here and to other neighboring cays.
  • Lamanai: Surrounded by dense jungle and overlooking the New River Lagoon, Lamanai is one of the oldest and biggest sites in Central America of Mayan archeological ruins dating back to 1,500 BC. The ruins are known as much for their impressive architecture as their lush setting. Lamanai is about halfway between Belize City and Orange Walk, and is accessible by boat or bus.
  • Orange Walk Town: Nicknamed “Sugar City” due to its main industry, Orange Walk Town is 53 miles northwest of Belize City, accessible by bus and the fourth largest town in Belize. Due to its history of British Colonial rule, English is the most common language spoken here.

Best Neighborhoods in Belize City

  • Fort George: The most upscale and well-developed neighborhood is also where you will find the best accommodation and restaurants in the city. Streets are lined with stately historical mansions in various states of maintenance, and the area also includes Museum of Belize, Memorial Park, Marine Promenade, and Fort George Lighthouse.
  • Barracks Road: Just a short taxi drive north of downtown, most of the land on Barracks Road is public park land that stretches one mile along the Caribbean Sea before turning inland to an area of modern, middle-class houses. The area is home to a handful of restaurants and hotels. A great choice for people seeking the peaceful seaside and parkland setting, while still maintaining distance from, the hustle and bustle of downtown.
  • Southside Commercial District: Along Regent and Albert streets heading north from Haulover Creek, this is the commercial downtown of the city with many small shops, restaurants, banks, offices, and budget hotels. This neighborhood is home to many points of interest including the Swing Bridge, St. John’s Cathedral, House of Culture, and the Supreme Court. A word to the wise, this is also where some crime is known to occur.
