Everything was amazing from the history to the architecture to the onsen.

Steeped in history - 300 years old, but wonderfully maintained! Staff were also great, from little touches like greeting us at the outside entrance (timing it with the bus schedules!) to being super accommodating with booking the private onsen. We didn’t realise onsens close at 10am and don’t reopen until 3pm (for cleaning) wanted to get a soak in before we checked out and missed the last booking - fortunately they let us have a quick soak before we checked out. Food was also amazing, and although it’s expensive, it’s worth the money! Wish we checked in earlier to chill and fully try out the amenities - nice tea/snack/wine/sake bar all included with the stay.

We had an absolutely delightful stay at this hotel! The hospitality was exceptional - the staff went above and beyond to make us feel welcome and always were happy to answer any questions we had. The food was a highlight of our experience. We enjoyed eight courses of traditional Japanese cuisine, and each dish had beautiful presentation and was incredibly tasty. We booked family room with private onsen. The private onset was a luxurious touch, offering complete relaxation and tranquility. Highly recommended for anyone seeking an immersive Japanese cultural experience! Thanks again for everything!

I went for my birthday and the staff was so amazing! They gave me all these special treats for my birthday and I didn't even tell them it was my birthday they gleaned it from my check in details. They were very accommodating in general and having the private onsen was amazing. The beds were so comfortable, the staff was amazing, they had free drinks in the common area constantly which was great. The welcome drink was also a very nice touch. Be prepared to be pampered!

Dinner and breakfast were both excellent multi-course meals of Kaiseki cuisine. While I eat everything, my wife and kids are vegetarian. We had let them know in advance and they customized the food for all of us. The onsen in our room as well as the public one were very relaxing and the room itself was extremely comfortable. It would be hard to find a ryokan that tops this one!

you will need a car to travel around Hakone but if you only want to stay in the hotel the location doesn’t matter.

One of the most amazing, if not the most amazing place we have ever stayed in. Every detail was looked after. From the communication before the arrival, to the moment when we said farewell, the hospitality was best in class. We wanted to enjoy the Ryokan experience and looked for one that would be special and unique, as we were on our Honeymoon Trip. Matsuzakaya Honten for sure exceeded all expectations we had. The lobby, the rooms, the onsens were all decorated in a traditional Japanese fashion. The dinner, served in the traditional Japanese way was an amazing experience I would recommend anyone travelling to Japan to try. The hospitality of every single member of staff was just outstanding. Special mention to Ana, she served us dinner, and during the time she was with us feel super special, sharing details of the Ryokan, the Japanese culture, etc. Loved absolutely everything of the experience, every single second of it. The traditional bedroom, the onsen in the room, the private onsens of the complex, the dining experience. An immersive experience of the Japanese culture which I would repeat every single time I visit Japan. Can’t wait to return to Japan and stay again at Matsuzakaya Honten!

This is hard question to answer as everything was just perfect. Location was probably the “worst” part, although being where it is, in the middle of the mountain, is part of what makes it special.

A little off the beaten track, but this onsen is over 360+ years old and you really feel like you've stepped into a quiet and peaceful realm. The place is very beautiful - there are little areas to sit in and relax, both traditional and modern. They have little historical rooms to peruse, free drink stations if you're thirsty, and a small gift shop. Their public onsen was so incredibly gorgeous (just a note, they seem to change sides in the morning - so keep your sleepy eyes open to avoid stepping into the men's baths by accident)! The room we had was comfortable and cozy, the perfect space for us to relax and soak in Hakone's hot spring mindset. Additionally, we didn't realize we would be getting an 8-course dinner and breakfast with our stay!! Everything was prepared so meticulously and so very delicious. We hope to return again and spend a little more time here! For future guests: I recommend familiarizing yourself with the Hakone busses and getting Pasimo or Suica on your phone to navigate to this location, as it is away from the larger Hakone attractions. Simply jump on with your Pasimo/Suica and take it to the Ashinoyu bus stop - it's less than 4 min walk to the ryokan from there!

Our private onsen bath was unfortunately unusable. The temperature was lava-hot for our foreigner-skin and the valve to adjust the temperature didn't seem to make any difference despite any direction we turned it in! Could only admire the bath and dip a few fingers in. Luckily, the temperature in the public onsens were just fine!

Phenomenally warm service. Accommodating staff, delicious food, gorgeous facilities, and soothing hot springs in nature. Would definitely stay again.
