Real paradise, real kindness.

Staying in Malakati was an exceptional experience. Locals are incredibly welcoming, kind, and helpful. Families took turns in preparing delicious fresh meals 3 times a day. There are many opportunities to explore the island and surrounding areas such as caves, snorkeling, diving, fishing, and hiking as well as learn about Fijian culture. I would recommend this picturesque village for real travelers who are ready to experience Fijian everyday life. I am hoping to return soon.

Our family loved our time at Malakati and hope to come back one day!

We had an incredible experience at Malakati for three nights. It was worth trading in some creature comforts for the experience to get off the beaten tourist track, away from all the curated resorts and have the opportunity to immerse ourselves in the Fijian way of life. Our bure was VERY simple, but it was all we needed. It was located on the beachfront, with the village behind us, and the bay is absolutely stunning: White sand, turquoise warm waters and gorgeous sunsets. We were even treated to multiple rainbows after some tropical rain. We were invited into the homes of the villagers for each meal, where you sit on the floor and are treated to their local cuisine. It was lovely to have a chat with each family and learn a little about them, and kids were always peaking in at us from outside. We purposely booked over a Sunday so that we could join them for their church service. We are not a religious family (and the service was all in Fijian) but knew that the power of their music would be moving. The choral harmonies were incredible and gave me goosebumps. What a unique experience it was. Our children (6 and 8) had a wonderful time playing on the beach with the other kids in the village, collecting shells and swimming in the ocean. It was great to expose them to an authentic experience, where they were immersed in the Fijian culture and saw not just how they lived but also what they valued. If you are an adventurous and curious traveller, who is up for more rustic living in exchange for unique and amazing experiences, this should be high on your list. Couldn't recommend it more. PS. Take the Yasawa Flyer instead of the Tavewa Seabus - way less seasickness on the Flyer route (having done both we learned our lesson!)

Exceptional

It was an amazing experience for our family! The location and the beach and bay are simply stunning. The village people are very welcoming and super nice. Lots of „Bula!“ wherever you see someone. The kids a curious and happy to show you around. The water is superb for swimming and playing around in. We loved the different dog characters hanging out at the beach - all very friendly. You pay your „entrance“ fee and that‘s it, you are guests of the community instead of feeling like customers - the concept works really well and seems fair for everyone. It is simple, as that‘s what village life in the Yasawas is, but if you‘re somewhat open minded and up for trading some less comfort for having a unique and closer-to-authentic experience then this is for you. The hike up to the ridgeline in the early morning was fantastic. Amazing views and some village children and dogs as good company. We just loved it!

An incredible place to stay with wonderful people

A wonderful place. When you stay here you become part of village life, eating with a different family for each meal in their homes. The food prepared was delicious. As much as you want to eat- fresh fish, papaya, mango, rice and dahl. Big breakfasts that were delicious. As a solo traveller it was perfect as I got to talk to so many people and learn about village life. The children are a joy to talk to. We sang together a lot and watching them play on the beach was all the entertainment needed! You can donate to the village school also. Everyone was so friendly and happy and it is a stunning location. Take a hike up the nearby mountain for a great view of all the islands.

Just to say it is basic so don’t expect to have tea or coffee in you room. if you bring it with you, you can find someone to give you hot water to make some. Nothing is lockable so let go of worrying about your stuff. it’s a small village and you can trust that everything will be where you left it. Bring bottled water with you if you are concerned about drinking here. also bring toilet roll if you can. resources are short here.

Real Fijian Village experience - wonderful people

The beach is honestly the most beautiful beach we'd ever laid eyes on and our accommodation was right on the shoreline. The bure we were in was very basic but had loo roll, soap, access to a loo and shower (didn't work for us due to water shortage). It's rough and ready so be prepared for that but if you're happy having a true experience and don't mind lack of luxury then this is a great place. The food was very good, home cooked traditional Fijian food and every day we ate each meal with a different family, which was a lovely way to meet as many people from the village as possible. The people in the village are incredibly welcoming and friendly and you can go up to anyone to ask anything and they'll help you out. They suggested activities for us to do, took us fishing and hiking, made us hats and gave us a kava demonstration. You have to pay in cash for all of these but it's very reasonably priced and worth it for the help it gives to the community. All of the money you pay goes to their church and school and the families that cook for you. Also great for families with young children as there are lots of kids in the village who are always up for playing and are energetic and will invite you for a volleyball game every evening!

We liked it all. There were mice in our hut but it didn't bother us. Worth knowing before though if rodents scare you.

Absolutely amazing location, but you will definitely experience village life!

The view and location is absolutely stunning!!! The people are so friendly and welcoming!!!!

It was quite a full on experience having every meal in someone’s house. It’s much nicer to have meals brought to your bure so that you can eat them in private. If we did it again we would skip breakfast and ask to have lunch brought to our bure and then go to dinner with a villager to their house. Also, we had a mouse in our room which freaked my wife out. Bring enough bottled water and snacks for your stay. (Note: there is no fridge, kettle or microwave, but there is plenty of solar power for charging devices.)

Most memorable Hospitality in Paradise

Super special Fiji experience to be staying in a village. Every meal we had with a different family was a great way to taste different food and meet another family.We did our own snorkeling during the days or local activities . We learnt about many aspects of their lives. The children went to school everyday on a boat in front of our hut. We said that if we could be 10 % Fijian after this experience we would be. This is because they shine as kind hearted, generous natured people...Thanks so much to this being available.

Village hut living is more basic...so be prepared.

our stay was great! a fabulous opportunity to get to know the real Fijian lifestyle, wonderful people, great food which was prepared from different families and eaten in the different houses, we were surprised about having our own “real” toilet and shower, nice and clean room! beachfront location, very quiet area, beach for our own

This was an experience to make us appreciate life in the USA.

Breakfasts excellent. Location beautiful. People friendly & welcoming. Children SO cute & just endearing.

Full disclosure of costs. The boat cost more than originally thought, the meal plan ended up more than we read it, the yoguna for the chief cost twice as much as we had been told plus we were expected to give him cash on top of that. There were mice in our place. On woman was picking her nose when she came to ask if we were ready for our breakfast!

Nice village, great experience!

Highly recommended ! I loved my stay at Malakati Village Beach House! The village is so beautiful and very different from other ones in Yasawa islands. People are super nice, food was served in front the ocean with the view. Locals help tourists to enjoy the stay, they took me for a hike on the hill, from where you can see amazing views. I attended the church service, which was very interesting and kava ceremony at the chef’s house! Plenty of activities, but also possible to enjoy the serenity and the beach , as not many tourists at the same time. The blue house is super accommodating with 3 beds and private bathroom. They provide cole for the mosquitoes, which is very important for a good night sleep. 💤

Interesting authentic experience; friendly welcoming people; very basic accommodation

Beautiful beach & swimming in the area. The property is right in the village and you are thrust into the community the moment you get off the boat. Was a great insight into real Fijian life. You are made to feel special and part of the village. Each meal is served at a different persons house so you get to meet lots of people. We felt very welcome and met some wonderful people. Mosquito net over the bed was good and the bug screens on the window were great so we could have some air going through. We had a wonderful stay, it is very off the beaten track and suitable for hardy travellers, not people looking for luxury. Would recommend a 2-night stay.

The bure was extremely basic and the bed was sagging in the middle which made it very soft. We had very heavy rain on multiple nights and we had water drip through the roof (luckily the mosquito net stopped some of it reaching us). When the weather is poor, there is not much to do in the area so you are confined to the bure, so be prepared to keep yourselves amused. Families provide you with great hospitality however meals were repetitive in each household (Expect a lot of fish and starchy vegetables). Rain water is provided for drinking so take as much bottled water as possible. Facilities were limited, there was only one toilet (although clean and working) for 2 bures and the shower is barely a trickle so not much to wash in.

3 Night Homestay

The beach is wonderful and it is a quite location. Far from a resort kind of stay, but very close to more traditional Fiji lifestyle. The village is friendly and there are a couple activities to do such as a hike to the top of the hill and a hike to caves (though I did not do this because I ran out of cash, this is a cash only place).

Only one bungalow has electricity (the blue one), it happened to be the one I stayed in, but the two other huts are without which was less convenient for the other tenants. The prices are affordable, but also fluctuated a bit depending on who you talked to. The water is safe because it's rain water, but the food did a number on my stomach. There was a lack of variety as far as food went, but this understandable considering the economic state of the village. I stayed for three nights, but I recommend just two nights.

Exceptional

My wife, me and our 9 years old daughter stayed 3 days in Malakati village and this was by far the best part of our Pacific trip. The Malakati people are wonderful, smiling all the time. Bure was comfortable, with good beds and mosquito net. Food was really great. Every meal with different family, excellent local food, ample meals, vegetarian friendly. Beach is one of the most beautiful I ever saw, you can swim on high or low tide. There is a great reef for snorkeling on south side of the beach. There are several activities offered in the village, you can ask anybody from the village. They also have a shop where you can buy bottled water. We spent a lot of time with villagers and that was the best part. It helped us to learn a lot of about culture and way of life in Malakati. Evening volleyball was also great. We loved every minute spent there and we will come back for sure. This is by far the best way to spend vacation in Yasawas.
