A gorgeous property that exudes old world japanese traditions and charm while keeping up with modern necessities. The staff were friendly and seemed really proud of the property. The moonlight club was a delight. The onsen were the best we’ve been to in Japan. The views were incredible.
The property shows its age a bit, but to us it added to the charm of the experience.
We wished there was some kind of laundry service. Wither self serve or full service.

Amazing location in the forest. Great ryokan experience in an historical building. Large public baths. Overall great service and high quality meals.
Nothing in particular.

The dinner was awesome!

Absolutely Stunning! From the building which is an old bath house from the 1930s! Which is also HUGE! Litterally i was lost a few times in it. And the natural landscape surrounding it. My room had a private bath which had a beautiful view as well it felt from a painting the dinner was top notch one of the best Ive ever had In japan beware tho it was a 14 course meal 🤣 I got full mid way. You need to starve yourself for days to be able to finish it. Lastly the Breakfast was average. I also liked that they have a shuttle from the station 👍
I guess the floor futon wasnt that comfortable to my back that's used to beds. But it was an experience.

We liked everything. The room bath, the public baths, the foot bath, the staff, the garden, everything was perfect!! The room was very spacious, and the view…
If you don’t book the dinner don’t worry, you will not be hungry as there is a small restaurant in the hotel with a few dishes (snacks) on the menu and it’s not as pricy as that fancy Japanese dinner (but it’s probably not as big either :D)

Onsen was beautiful and outdoor
there is an indoor bath in the room as well
facilities are very old, and the hotel looks very old and like in a movie.
could look haunted and scary.

This was a great hotel with onsen. The person that helped us through and explain everything was Vi and she was so nice and helpful and spoke great English.
The room was nice and spacious and had a great view. We opted for a private onsen in the room and that was the best decision ever. In the evening, they have people setup the futon for you to sleep in. The public indoor and outdoor onsen was also pretty big but the public outdoor one was really nice since it's set within the hill (men's onsen).
If you ordered the kaiseki breakfast, it'll be in the dining hall, but if you order dinner, it will be in your room. The breakfast was great and had a nice sampling of foods.
The shuttle ran pretty often during peak times and convenient. It runs from the train station to the hotel and vice versa.
If you didn't take the shuttle then there's a walkway down the hill to the main city area that wasn't too bad but it was plenty of stairs and a little steep.
Overall, great experience and highly recommended.

This place was a dream come true for me. Gero was a little out of the way of the itinerary I had made for my husband and me, but I'm SO glad I made this stay work. I loved wondering the halls, exploring all the different rooms and views this place offers.
We checked in late, but the staff was still so kind and friendly. Thankfully the front desk lady showed us to our room, as this place is a bit of a maze - but that's part of what made our stay so fun! There's something unique and beautiful around every corner.
We did an in-room dinner and it was incredible! The food was delicious (absolutely worth the fairly high price), and the girl who brought each course to us was my favorite person I met in Japan (management, if you read this, know that Ami is the best!).
We had an in-room open air bath and I would recommend the splurge on this too. These rooms are higher up, and the view over the mountains and Gero was beautiful. Our last morning there, it began to snow heavily, and I can't describe what it was like to sit in a hot bath with a fully open window to the frigid, falling snow outside. Magical!
Monkeys! Right after breakfast on our first morning there, we looked out the windows across from the dining room and saw ~5-6 monkeys and a baby monkey! For the next hour or so, we found them all across the outside of the property. Be on the lookout, they apparently love the red berries!
If you have an in-room open air bath, there is no need to reserve a private bath downstairs. This may seem obvious, but based on a previous stay at a different ryokan, I thought it could be a cool additional experience. The private baths here are fine but nothing special, and if you've paid for a room with your own, there's no need to waste an hour (or take it from someone else) using the reserved ones downstairs. No fault of the property, just an FYI!

We appreciated the beautiful hotel building and its surroundings, which met our expectations perfectly. Our room was cozy with a lovely view; I highly recommend choosing a room with a window. Staff was very friendly.
There were aspects we didn't enjoy: the staff's low level of English made communication difficult, and the Onsen's closure between 10-15 h seemed inconvenient. 5 hours that you cannot access the bath, which is the main reason we came here. The place needs renovation. You see the decay all over the place, which is not what we expect for this price. The unnecessary use of plastic, including individually wrapping the glasses, was disappointing and environmentally unfriendly. Considering the high price, we expected better. We encountered a cockroach in one of our rooms, a disappointing experience for a supposedly upscale 4-star hotel. For a more enjoyable experience, I recommend considering Tagaragawa Onsen, where the Onsen is open longer, surrounded by nature, and offers better value for the price. Overall I would not recommend coming here. It’s just not worth it. Gero itself has zero charm in my opinion, and I think there are many options in Japan that will create a better experience overall when visiting.

Le petit déjeuner était copieux et délicieux. Nous avons extrêmement bien dormi, l’établissement est très calme. Le personnel est accueillant et au petit soin. Les bains chauds sont un vrai plus.
Rien.

Stellar historic building. Incredible staff. The exterior views and internal decorations were so nice. The Japanese breakfast experience was unforgettable. The Onsen baths are big and beautiful.
Absolutely nothing.

El entorno misterioso, que sea tan tradicional le da mucho encanto.
La cena en el restaurante muy buena y bien precio
El desayuno. Si no eres japonés no vas a comer nada. De buena mañana salmón, verduras encurtidas no apetece...para nuestro gusto un poco sobrepagado en general.
El shuttle a la estación. Si no, a saber cómo llegas. Esta bastante perdido en la montaña. Si estás más de una noche no sé qué se puede hacer allí. 1 noche más que suficiente.
Me esperaba más.

Beyond anything one can imagine. Couldn't recommend this accommodation more. Yunoshimakan is situated in the most serene location, surrounded by nature. The view from our room on the 11th floor was mind blowing, and we had the most beautiful sunset :)
Hospitality 10+!!
Public baths are absolutely beautiful.
Our room was spacious, the futon beds were the most comfortable we've had in our trip. The Kaiseki dinner is superb, breakfast delicious as well. Thank you so much, can't wait to visit again

Incredible property, I couldn’t recommend this place more. The staff were so lovely and helpful, gero is such a beautiful town to visit, the rooms had incredible views. It is on the pricey side but you get what you are paying for. They also serve beautiful breakfast every morning.

We had a wonderful and relaxing stay at Yunoshimakan. The onsen experience in our private bath was amazing with a great view onto the woods. The kaiseki (multi-course dinner) experience was great. The food was good and the service was reallly good. The mattresses were so comfortable for sleeping and the whole room with that view of the woods was so relaxing.

Beautiful 1930s building in a glorious natural setting on the side of Mt. Nakane. The hotel operates like a traditional ryokan, so you will be allocated a staff member to look after you throughout your stay. All the staff were very professional, friendly and attentive. Dinner will be served by your staff member in your room, and they will diligently come and go as you eat to prepare each subsequent course. Breakfast was served in the banquet hall, and was always sitting out ready for you at the pre-arranged time in the morning. All the food changed daily and was of very high quality, with the majority of it being locally sourced. The Hida beef dishes especially were delicious.
The hotel has two onsen on site, and you are provided the towels/yukata you'll need. There are many different activities and facilities available to keep you occupied, as well as a souvenir shop.
Rooms, being traditional style, are very spacious and airy. The view from the higher floors of the mountains around Gero was beautiful, and although there was no air conditioning, the large windows could be opened wide. Some rooms have their own private onsen baths which are great for giving you the onsen experience if you're more self-conscious. Doors to these could be opened to the outside for the open-air bath experience. Futon beds will be set up very quickly in the evening by staff members, and I found them very comfortable. Opting for a room with a private toilet was better for convenience, not all rooms have their own bathroom facilities.
Hotel bus will transport you to and from the JR station but be aware that pickups don't start until 2:30pm - if you arrive on the Hida express at 11am for example, you will have to pay for a taxi. Although it doesn't look far away, walking to the hotel is not an option, especially with luggage due to the steepness of the hillside.
Some parts of the room in the 1987-built section of the hotel felt dated, and could do with freshening up. Somewhat difficult to get to if your timings are wrong.

Everything about this hotel is beautiful. It’s like staying in a time capsule and Honors the nature of the mountains
The room had a smell that was quite strong. Not sure exactly what it was but it wasn’t very pleasant.

This hotel / ryokan its one of a kind. Some time agora the emperor and wife visited and stayed there for one night.
The onsen are female and male separeted and thei're quite nice. One of them (interior) has a better view then the other.
The outside onsens are great.
The dinner you have to have an open minded and go with it. You will experience a lot of courses!
The breakfast its a typical japanese breakfast so pay attention for that.
When you arrive at the train station there will be a chauffeur from the hotel waiting for you.
Our room had no shower so you needed to shower in the onsen. For first timers could be a little bit strange, but we are all naked and all doing the same.

location is amazing! great view over Gero village and great walk around the hotel and down to the village. fresh air from the mountain and we had 3 days of oxygen bar for free! woke up to the birds songs in the morning is just amazing!
the room is big and comfy.
the hot spring! that what we are here for after all! they have real hot spring water from the tap, from the shower and of course, from the indoor hot spring bathtub! we visited the hotel end of May, and early June, during mid week and there aren’t many guests, so, although we have private bath in our room, we all enjoyed the public bath very very much! as there was no one there and you can fully enjoy the public bath in open air! and yes, no garments allowed in the bath! so do it the proper Japanese way. the private bath is also great during the cleaning hours of the public bath. (10am-13:00) I do believe if there are more guests, we will definitely enjoy the private bath more!
the dinner and breakfast were Amazing! we stayed 3 nights and every meals are different! and we had the most luxurious sukiyaki of our trip! amazing Wagyu beef sukiyaki! we strongly recommend you to upgrade to the Hida beef menu! it’s well worth it!
the service was also very warm and welcoming!
it’s an old and big hotel, so some part of the hotel can be eerie when you are alone. especially when there wasn’t a lot of other guests around and you get lost … however, if there is a group of you, then it becomes fun to explore the hotel and collect stamps.
mosquitoes! I don’t know where they comes from as there are nets on the balcony so even when the window is opened, the mosquitoes shouldn’t able to get through. However, they did get through and OMG… I got bites all over my body and face. our room attendant kindly plug in the mosquitoes repellent for me but it doesn’t work… only on my last day I realised that… the electric repellent was plugged in but not switched on… well… I did my parts and gave it back to nature!

Very traditional and immersive stay. The city and location were really beautiful. We enjoyed it a lot.
The food was a great selection of the Japanese cuisine, but some of it was a little too challenging for unaccustomed Western tongues.

They private onsen bath at the room is very comfortable
They do not come to the JR station at their scheduled time for the shuttle bus pickup after my walk around the area and I have to wait for more than 20 min and tried to call from the tourist information Center but not successful. So I have to get a taxi back. I complained afterwards and their excuse is that they don’t come because they know there is a JR delay!! They don’t expect that there will be other people waiting!! Although their remarks for the shuttle bus schedule is “no reservations required”, I will suggest to double confirm if you want to take any shuttle bus. Finally they apologised and reimbursed me the taxi fare.
