About this resort
Horseshoe Lake Hideaway resort consists of a lodge, a cabin, and a duplex unit situated on 22 wooded acres on private, no-motor Horseshoe Lake. The resort sleeps 21 guests. Ideal for extended families, reunions, or retreats. The resort has 800 feet of frontage on spring-fed Horseshoe Lake, which has been estimated to be 15 acres in size and up to 18 feet deep. The property sets back a long wooded lane offering tranquility and seclusion while being only minutes from town. The lodge unit has 5 bedrooms and 2.5 bathrooms and sleeps 11. The stand-alone cabin has 2 bedrooms, 1 bathroom and sleeps 4 in beds. The cabin also has a fold-out couch to accommodate up to 2 more guests. The duplex unit has a double-locked inner door dividing the two sides. The rental side of the duplex has 2 bedrooms, 1 bathroom and sleeps 4. In all, there are 14 beds available for guests plus the fold-out couch. NOTE: One side of the duplex unit is not rented out and is reserved for the Owners, who usually are not but could be present during part of your stay. Other than the Owner's unit, this rental includes the entire resort and all amenities. Bed linens, blankets, and towels provided. Kitchens fully stocked with pots, pans, dishes, etc. Each unit has a coffee maker, toaster, and microwave. The duplex unit has a window air conditioner. The cabin and lodge DO NOT have air conditioning. Each bedroom has its own box fan. Jet tub in cabin along with a separate shower. Private decks on cabin and lodge. Charcoal grill and picnic table provided for each unit. Campfire area with two firepits. Each unit has a wall-mounted flat-screen TV with Direct TV service and a DVD player. The televisions are not "smart" TVs. Hughes Net satellite wifi service is best described as better than nothing and is the only thing available in the area. It's slow but usually ok for web browsing. Lodge has a game room/recreation room with a small ping-pong table, dartboard, and board games, as well as a small TV with a DVD/VCR and children's movies. Cell phone service is usually good with Verizon. Guests have reported that ATT cell service can be spotty. No laundry facilities are available for Guests at the resort, but there is a nice laundromat a few minutes away in the town of Mio. Excellent bass and panfish fishing in the lake, which has only two other waterfront property owners and no public access. Large perch occasionally are caught in the middle of the lake. Small sandy beach area for swimming and wading. Like many northern Michigan lakes, the spring-fed lake is clean for swimming, but the lake bottom turns from sand to "muck" approximately 15 feet from shore. The resort is located in a secluded, heavily wooded area, and guests may encounter ticks in the summer months, particularly if they venture off of the maintained grounds and trails and into the woods. The overwhelming majority of the ticks in this part of Michigan are known as "dog ticks," which do not carry Lyme disease. Two canoes, two pedal boats, a row boat, and a kayak will be available for resort guests. Deer, turkey, geese, and other wildlife frequently observed on the property. A bald eagle also has been seen on occasion. Numerous other lakes within a short driving distance. Area attractions include fly fishing or canoeing/tubing on the AuSable River and golf courses. Although ATVs and other off-road vehicles are not permitted to be ridden on resort property or on adjacent private property, such vehicles may be brought to the resort and transported to nearby public riding areas. Horseshoe Lake Hideaway resort is about a 45-minute drive to Lake Huron and less than 2 hours from Mackinaw Island. Owners purchased the Horseshoe Lake Hideaway property about 12 years ago. In addition to enjoying the property personally, the Owners have spent several summers remodeling and renovating the cabins, lodge, and duplex. The 2020 season was the first time in more than a decade that the resort's units were available for guests to rent. Horseshoe Lake Hideaway was built in the 1960s. While it retains a "rustic" feel with much of the original knotty-pine interior, the Owners strive to make the units clean, comfortable, and appealing.

It was a great location and facility for our family to gather. Appreciate all that the property offered. Thanks!

Our family absolutely loved our stay at Horseshoe Lake – what a hidden gem! We were an extended family group of about 14, and having 3 separate sleeping units and kitchens was perfect for us. No struggles with finding enough fridge space or oven space! :) I have to say — I feel like the pictures on VRBO don't even do the property justice (it's better!). The lake is beautiful and private, there are plenty of outdoor areas for relaxing and playing games, and a great firepit. Plus, the property owner was kind and always quick to respond to questions, providing all the info we needed to enjoy our stay. The cabins included plenty of towels, bedding, and more very thoughtful amenities. For any birders out there, a bald eagle, great blue heron, and solitary sandpiper were frequent visitors to the lake on our stay.
This is included in the listing, but the only thing I would note is that there is no laundry on site. Just a matter of packing enough clothes for your stay, and making sure to get beach towels out hanging in the sun to keep them dry! (There's also a laundromat in town.)
10/10 would recommend for any group, especially a larger extended family/friend group!

We enjoyed our stay at Horseshoe Lake Hideaway. Everything was very clean and tidy. The three separate buildings provided us with a lot of space but are close enough to still feel like part of the group.
It is clear that the owners take care of the property and pride in its beauty. They show a lot of attention to detail in both the aesthetic of the property and the little touches like leaving a tea cake for us. They left a basket of small toiletry items in case we forgot anything, fresh bottles of hand soap at the sinks, dish sponges in each kitchen, fresh bottles of bodywash in the bathrooms, and towels…so many soft towels!
The kitchen and grill area are well stocked. I only used my own knives. I couldn’t find an ice-cream scoop, but it could have been in another kitchen I didn’t get a chance to search. There are no containers with lids, so bring containers, Ziplocks, or saranwrap if you think you will have leftovers. We brought lots of drinking water; it is very expensive at the local grocery store, and we used it to cook as well as the water smelled like well water.
Coffee is ready! The owners left coffee, water for the pots, powdered creamer, and sugar in an adorable display in each kitchen.
The lake is beautiful with lots of small fish for catch and release. It is not great for swimming because the bottom is typical for inland Michigan lakes. However, we still swam.
Like another commenter said, one room is really bunkbeds in a large closet, but it does have its own

We loved this rental! The property was as described, very well stocked and welcoming. We had a range in age from 9 months to 87 years -13 of us-and each of us had plenty of space. Lots of games and the kids enjoyed fishing and swimming. The lake is quite clear. Doug was a perfect host and very quick to respond to any questions. Would not hesitate to rent again.

This was a great place to stay; secluded and quiet with plenty of space for multiple people; activities onsite and also close enough to drive to a beach and to river canoeing.
We were easily able to make our food with the items provided, and it was awesome to have boats and a fire pit available.
Just a few things to help clarify the listing. The buildings are close together (which was a plus for us). There are plenty of fun games and movies for kids. Kitchens are well-stocked, and there were lots of towels. There were definitely lots of bugs (early July). Temp in buildings was fine without AC.
The one item we wished was available was a washer/dryer. Also maybe worth noting is that the bedroom in the lodge with the bunk beds is quite tiny and has a bathroom attached.

The spaces worked out perfectly. Everyone had a good time. We strolled through the woods, enjoyed the water and fire pit. Relaxed, laughed and had a lot of fun! Thank you!

If I was selfish I would leave a bad review so this place doesnt get overbooked for next summer!!! But I can't do that to Doug and his amazing place. My family had an fabulous time, this set of cabins were perfect for my family and we did everything offered on the property, paddle boat, canoeing, volleyball, hiking, ect. We even brought an airmattress for king of the hill wresting matches on the lake which was hilarious and super fun. Can't wait to come back next summer!!!

My family and had an amazing time at the property. Far away from everything so the kids could be kids all day. And when it came to enjoying the lake the property owner went above and beyond to make sure there was plenty to do. 3 canoes, a kayak and 2 paddle boats. I will definitely be staying again. Thanks for everything William!

We rented this property for a family vacation and were so pleased with it. It was perfect for a large group, having plenty of space for everything and everyone. It was clean, yet cozy and inviting. You can tell the owners put love and care into the place. It is very kid friendly, the owners have a wonderful game room and do little things to make the kids feel special. The lake is small but so private. It has a nice beach with gradual water entry which is great for small swimmers. Good fishing. Beautiful setting and great views from several nice decks. It had extremely well stocked kitchens . Would highly recommend !!

I would recommend this property to anyone and everyone!! The accommodations were incredible for our large group and the property is just gorgeous. Everything outdoors is right outside your doors!! I will definitely be staying here again. We actually tried to extend our stay beyond our six days while we were there, but unfortunately it was already booked!! Not one person wanted to leave. 10/10 on everything!! Not having AC was rough for some during the hot days, but being in the lake made up for it!! Communication with the owner was outstanding. He really goes above and beyond. We had an incredible week and created amazing memories here!!!

First let me say that the owners are some of the nicest I have ever rented from and I rent a lot of homes for trips! They were quick to answer any and all questions I had before and during my stay. They were fully stocked for large groups, they didn't mind if you took a pot or utensil from one cabin and brought it to another. They also were kind enough to leave access to supply closets so we could get extra toilet paper, trash bags ect.
The way the cabins are set up is great. It allows for large groups to be together but still have some privacy. The beds were comfy and the space was clean.
A few things to note to future renters (but understand these things are no fault of the owners).
1. The pond is small so it's not super clean, if your fussy about where you swim you may not like it.
2. The lagoon and surrounding woods are full of ticks (at least at this moment). If you stay in the yard or by the pond you are fine
3. Cell phone service is not great for t-mobile and at&t carriers.
4. While there is wifi available it was not high quality... I'm not sure you can get much that better so far back in the woods
5. There is not a ton to do in Mio besides spend time on the Ausable River (which was fine by us)... I think the town packs up its side walks at 7pm... seriously even Mc Donald's was closed at 7pm lol
This rental isn't for everyone... but my family LOVED it!!! We didn't do much just spent a week together and relaxed, played lots of yard games, and forgot the outside world.

Just as described
We had a great time at the resort. It is very secluded and we had the lake all to ourselves. If you are looking for a fancy place, this isn't it. But if you are looking for a clean, nice place with plenty of beds then you can't go wrong. We did have an issue with one refrigerator not working properly and the sink in the lodge not draining well. But other than that we had no issues. The lake was low but still able to swim. We saw a family of deer across the lake almost every morning. We were visited by wild turkeys and cranes as well. We would stay here again.

Owners had amazing communication through and before trip. Cabins were clean and cute, everything we needed was included. Upon arrival there was a little treasure hunt on the beach for the kids ❤ Absolutely stunning views, open porches with seating, everyone enjoyed fishing, kayaking, paddle boating around the lake or just relaxing in the many seating areas. Bald Eagle viewed everyday. Main lodge has 5 bedrooms, the 2 side cabins have 2 bedrooms each. Comfortably sleeping 19 in beds, plenty of couches for more to sleep. Our family loved our stay and plan to return again soon!

We had 21 family members on this trip from four months old to their mid 60's and everyone enjoyed themselves. There was room to spread out and it was so calm and quiet. The lake is beautiful as is the setting in the trees. The cabins and lodge are quaint and nicely equipped. The location made several day trips, to Lake Huron and to Mackinaw City very easy to do. The communication with the owner was quick and very professional. I recommend staying here and plan to come again soon!
