Sunpath Mongolia Tour & Hostel

It looks new and you can use the kitchen freely. The staff Nara Bagsh (Teacher Nara) was so friendly to us and so cute even though she can’t speak English.

The signage could have been a bit clearer. There were no instructions on how to get there, what the door code was. It is behind the building via the playground. Once we got there, we had to wait for someone from the other hostel to let us in. And we went to the wrong one. Turns out Sunpath is on the second floor. But there was no signage on the door so we accidentally followed the other person to the Ulaanbaatar hostel. Also, the communal areas are a bit small and it feels a bit awkward interacting with other guests. It feels more like a home with 5 bedrooms rather than a hostel.

Very good hostel, but their tours are where they truly shine. Took a 12 day tour through central Mongolia and the Gobi. A great guide (Miga) and an excellent driver/mechanic made for a seamless, well paced trip staying with locals and experiencing this amazing wide open country. Will visit again, stay at the hostel, and take another Sunpath tour.

Sunpath is a very comfortable place to stay in many respects. The rooms are spacious, the beds are very comfortable, and the hostel is quiet. Some staff members were exceptionally kind and helpful.

One staff members was surprisingly rude. The hostel is generally kept very clean, but the restroom was usually missing toilet paper and soap. Even after I brought this to the staff’s attention, the supplies often were not replaced. The free breakfast consists of a hard-boiled egg, toast, and instant coffee or tea. Unfortunately, the eggs were consistently either seriously overcooked or undercooked. Laundry costs $10, which is almost twice what I have paid at other hostels in UB and guests are not permitted to wash clothes by hand. My biggest concern was how reservations were handled. The hostel keeps its records on paper, and staff incorrectly insisted that I had to check out even though I still had another night remaining on my reservation. They told me the hostel was fully booked, although Booking.com showed seven beds still available. I had to refuse to leave and ask them to call the manager. When she eventually arrived, she confirmed that I was entitled to stay. No one apologized for the mistake. On a more positive note, the manager was kind enough to drive me to another hostel on the day I was actually scheduled to check out. Overall, Sunpath has comfortable rooms, excellent beds, and a quiet atmosphere, but inconsistent service, overpriced laundry, and poor reservation management detracted significantly from my stay.
