THE SPACE Beauty, peace, and simple elegance define the Above the Clouds Retreat experience. Located at the end of a quarter-mile-long wooded driveway you'll find two exquisite homes, each perched on the top of the world overlooking a breathtaking 180+degree mountain vista. Complete privacy abounds on this 20-acre estate where the only signs of life are lights twinkling across the valley at night and the wildlife that shares the land and soars over the valley. You’ll be immersed in the profound beauty of nature in these exquisite homes where huge windows, tasteful art, and one-of-a-kind furnishings blur the boundaries between the built and natural worlds and up to 13 people can sleep lulled by the sound of the wind and owls calling. Built into a granite outcropping, Above the Clouds I -- the main house -- sleeps 7 in two spacious private bedroom wings on different levels of the house (a king on one suite level, a queen and daybed on another level, and a pull-out queen in the cozy upper living room). Each bedroom has an en-suite, luxurious bathroom (one bath with a 2-person jacuzzi, the other with a huge shower with 5 shower heads). Graced by floor-to-ceiling picture windows facing Vermont’s iconic mountain range, yet another level of the house sports over 1500 sf of open-concept living with both a fireplace and wood stove built into a soaring fieldstone hearth, a dining room table that can expand to seat 12+, and a fully-appointed gourmet kitchen. A massage chair and hammock chair add comfort and a touch of whimsy to the experience, while french doors open onto a spacious deck with a 6-person hot tub and a large patio with a Traeger grill/smoker. From there, stone steps lead down to the extensive flower, herb, and vegetable gardens; the water garden; blueberry bushes; many rock outcroppings; or over to Above the Clouds II, the adjacent guesthouse, where you can take a private outdoor shower while gazing across the valley or toast marshmallows around the fire pit. Situated nearby, the guesthouse (Above the Clouds II) is placed so each home has almost complete privacy. This home sleeps up to 6 in a two-story, open-concept layout that features, among other things, custom-made live-edge furniture; a spa-like bathroom with a carved-boulder sink, a tree-trunk vanity base (from a birch on the property), and a spacious shower with a river-rock floor and rainfall showerhead; and a glass-walled deck perched up so high that you’ll feel like you’re sitting in a treehouse. With an expansive granite counter, the sleek Euro-style kitchen has all the appliances and gadgets needed to cook up a gourmet feast. And snuggling on the large sheepskin in front of the gas fireplace is the perfect place to sip a glass of wine or read a great book. In fact, everywhere you turn there is cozy place to soak up the splendor of this peaceful and uplifting getaway. No detail has been missed at Above the Clouds. All bed linens, towels, and pillows are hotel quality with both down and non-down options available. The toiletries are made from organic botanicals and essential oils. For your entertainment, both homes have WiFi, cable TVs set up for streaming, Blueray DVD players (with an array of DVDs to choose from), and bluetooth speakers for streaming your digital music. For some old-fashioned fun, there is a generous store of books, puzzles, and board and lawn games. And no vacation retreat would be complete without hammocks for napping and a place to roast marshmallows at night (with pillows, firewood, and marshmallows provided, of course). Although Above the Clouds is close to many of Vermont’s premier tourist destinations, there’s so much to delight you here that you may never want to leave! GUEST ACCESS The entire property is yours to use. Both homes, the gardens, decks, patios, hot tub, outdoor shower, fire pit blueberry bushes, raised bed gardens, and flower gardens are yours alone. Parking is available for up to six cars. Ask me if you need to bring more than six cars. GUEST INTERACTION My husband (Bob) and I will not be on the premises during your stay. We will greet you on arrival and then take off on our own adventure. I'm always happy to work with you in advance to help you plan a wonderful, and I will always be available to answer questions by email or phone. A local caretaker will be available if you need on-site assistance. OTHER THINGS TO NOTE Although Above the Clouds I is Bob’s and my principal home, we have the house set up so our prized possessions are in locked closets. Everything else is yours to use, though we ask that you use the food in the pantry of the main house on a limited, honor-system basis (of course the fridge and freezer will also be cleaned out for your personal use). The kitchens in both homes have well-stocked spice cabinets and we supply coffee, tea, maple syrup, some organic whole milk, and a few other specials treats to indulge you upon arrival. We do not, however, supply breakfast. Additional Services: We can help you arrange private, in-house massages and/or yoga classes. Extra cleaning and laundry services is available, at a fee, with 24-hour advance notice. We can also arrange to have your refrigerator stocked with fresh local delectables, including the much-sought after, #1-rated beer in the US -- Heady Topper by the Alchemist -- which is brewed nearby and only sold in Vermont. THE NEIGHBORHOOD While you'll feel like you're at the end of the world, Above the Clouds is conveniently located 10 minutes off I-89, 20 minutes from Sugarbush, 30 minutes from Stowe village (the ski area is another 10 minutes up the road), 20 minutes from Montpelier, and 45 minutes from Burlington. Plus the beer, coffee, cheese, and ice cream mecca of Waterbury is only 20 minutes away. Come summer, the food artisans and talented crafters at the Waitsfield Farmers Market attract people from far and wide, and there are many points of access to the nearby Long Trail and Catamount Trail. The Mad River, Waterbury Reservoir, Lake Champlain and more are nearby for water sports and world-class fishing. Or you can start your outdoor adventures closer to home; paths that start on the property lead all over the mountain and are great for hiking, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing. Bicyclists have easy access to Vermont's picturesque Route 100 and many more off-the-beaten paths, roads, and trails. We maintain an extensive collection of books, magazines, local papers, maps and handouts about sites, tours, events, hikes and restaurants you can visit/enjoy while you are here. Plus, of course, we are always happy to make suggestions. GETTING AROUND You'll definitely need a car to get here. Winter visitors will certainly want at least front-wheel drive and snow tires. Four wheel or all wheel drive cars are best for the winter but not always needed. During Vermont's mud season (generally from mid March through early April), however, AWD or 4WD are essential. If you're willing to put up with the mess of the mud, fresh maple syrup (and sugar on snow), as well as quiet-mountain and spring season skiing definitely make a mud season trek worth the adventure.
