This cottage exceeded our expectations! Very cozy and well thought out. New mattress delivered for our last night and it was perfect. Very private location with views of the ocean to watch for whales and to enjoy the property and orchard. Nicely mowed lawns, very green with many flowers and palms and trees made for a beautiful place to wonder around, or just sit on the red bench and take it all it.
We loved the sunrises and were out there every morning to enjoy the view and get recharged for the day. We've never had such a wonderful experience before! Wow.
There's nice roads and trails to the ocean bluff to watch the waves hit the cliffs. We enjoyed our week there and was close enough "town" and the botanical gardens and volcanoes, so it worked well. Bob and his wife and dog Lilly were gracious and responsive. Thanks for a great place to stay!

Bob and Kady Smith are gracious, generous people…just lovely hosts. The residence is truly remarkable, with breathtaking views of the ocean and Mauna Kea. Bob pointed us in the direction of all the sites along the Hamakua Coast. The property, just 10 miles north of Hilo, is near Akaka Falls and the 4 mile scenic route with the tropical botanical garden - the best we have ever seen. The residence is gated within Bob & Kady’s fruit farm. It is clean with a large living area with kitchen/dining, nice bedroom, and excellent bathroom with large walk in shower. Excellent one week experience that we would love to do again!

We had a wonderful stay at the cottage! The property was spotless. And we could come and go as we needed with a gate opener. The kitchen was well equipped and the grill outside let us cook all our meals easily. The host even dropped off some citrus fruits for us, and had a great guide book available for our use. Finally, we had fun playing with Lily the Border Collie. All in all, it was a lovely and relaxing stay.

The cottage is situated on a beautiful fruit orchard. The accommodations are very clean and comfortable. The hosts live on the property and are willing to assist in every way. I very much enjoyed my two week stay and plan to return. Thank you to Bob and Kady!

This was a wonderful place to stay for a couple of days north of Hilo. The location was not too far off the beaten track, but just far enough that we were away from the city. Bob and Kady invited us to sample fruit from their orchard. They have included everything one could possibly want in their nice little cottage. Their border collie, Lilly, was friendly and adorable!

Our stay at the cottage was amazing. It had everything needed to accommodate us, and was just a quick drive into all the areas to explore. The orchard on the property is beautiful, and Bob showed us some of the plants and fruits during check in. Bob and Kady are extremely polite and welcoming, and the pup on the property is super sweet and comes around to gently say hi when you arrive. Any time we travel we worry about cleanliness, but this place was as immaculate as they come. We slept well and enjoyed the giant shower after long days out. Most of all, it felt like a home away from home, just on a much more exotic level. We are glad we stayed here for part of our honeymoon and would absolutely stay again. Thanks for having us!

We have been staying at VRBO properties for 20+ years and The Ocean View Couples Cottage is at the top of our list! Everything we needed for our stay was included in the well-appointed cottage and it was incredibly clean and roomy. The owners are super friendly and helpful. The fruit orchard on the property is beautiful and the morning sun rises are breath-taking and not to be missed. Relaxation and serenity at it’s best is what we found here!

My partner and I were greeted by Bob to show us around the beautiful property. There were many fruit trees and tropical plants. Bob gave us many recommendations on sights, activities, and restaurants on the island. The cottage itself was clean and provided many amenities. Thank you Bob, Kady and Lily for welcoming us to your slice of paradise.

Comfortable and beautiful stay! The host lives right on the property and very friendly and helpful. The grounds had so much fruit trees. We would stay again if in Hilo.

What a beautiful property to explore and enjoy. The grounds are full of Hawaiian trees, plants and birds. Our host, Lily the dog and her master Bob were right there to meet us, show us around and make us feel at home.
Bob brought us fresh picked fruit and was available with any questions we might have.
I highly recommend this listing for a truly relaxing, off grid experience.
Thank you Bob and Kady for sharing your beautiful world with us!

I loved staying at the orchard! Bob and Kady are amazing. The property is a little bit of paradise. So peaceful. The cottage is spotless and has a great vibe. I really enjoyed the grill on the patio. My favorite parts were walking barefoot on the property, the singing birds, Lilly (their collie), and the fresh fruit, especially picking lychee. Their cat is cool too. If things align again, I will definitely return to see Bob, Kady, and Lilly at their Sun and Moon Orchard. Mahalo and Aloha! Melissa M

I have been visiting Hawaii for 40 years, this is the best. Everything is so wonderful and the hosts Bob and Kady I can't say enough about these wonderful warm people. But most important is their dog Lilly, she came to say good morning everyday while we were eating breakfast, she stays outside though. This place is on 10 acres with fruit trees and a beautiful stream.

Except for the kitchen, this would have been a 5-star place. The description of the kitchen listed an induction cooktop; in fact, it was only a one burner plug-in induction hot plate. This made it difficult and time-consuming to prepare a full meal. Also, a roll of plastic wrap would have been extremely helpful for covering left overs in the refrigerator and heating items in the microwave. Only aluminum foil was provided.

Bob and Kady are wonderful hosts. So kind. And don’t forget Lily their dog. Their cottage was immaculate and we did not want for anything. Very private. Wonderful yard and orchard. We would recommend highly to stay here and we would love to return one day if ever In Hawaii again. Kim and Rodger

We had a lovely week+ staying at Bob and Kady's. The cottage itself was clean and comfortable with all the amenities you could need. Bob and Kady were incredibly kind and hospitable without being intrusive on our getaway. Lily the dog was the best welcoming committee and visitor, and the property itself is in a remote area where all you really hear is the birds singing and/or the trade winds blowing. Only 15 minutes into Hilo and easy to access all other parts of that side of the Big Island. Hope to be back for another stay sooner than later. THANK YOU!

This is the best property we’ve stayed at for thoughtful consideration to the details of what people need when renting a vacation home. Bob met us when we arrived to make sure we knew all the important things, and he continued to check with us throughout our stay to make sure we had what we needed (fresh towels, more fresh citrus from the orchard, etc.).
The property is a perfect representation of windward Big Island … views of farm land, huge ocean vista, and green! Loved falling asleep to wind & rain. Make time in your visit to walk the orchard. Close enough to Hilo to do activities there and retreat back to quiet (directions given are perfect just be aware that when it gets dark it is DARK).
Strongly recommend if you are seeking peace and quiet.

If you want to spend some peaceful and relaxing time in a beautiful setting, this is the place. We enjoyed our hosts...it's always nice to get the flavor of the island from those who live there. Highly recommended 👌.

We loved the "Couple's Cottage"! The orchard on which this guest house sits is idyllic. Our hosts were hospitable and helpful. The cottage was clean and well-provisioned, and had lovely decor and amenities. We felt like we were out in the Hawaiian countryside, yet it was just a few minutes drive into bustling Hilo. We'd definitely book here again, and will for sure recommend to friends and family!

This was my 2nd time staying here, and it was just as great this time as last time. The location is a quick drive to Akaka Falls State Park and downtown Hilo. The hosts are very friendly and we enjoyed getting to know them. I like the fact that this cottage feels like you are a local and not a tourist. I highly recommend staying here if you want a quiet vacation.

Beautiful setting; comfortable accommodations; lovely, helpful hosts; delightful rural location a few miles north of Hilo; hoping there will be an opportunity to stay here again.

Beautiful, clean, well-cared for cottage. Bob and Kady were gracious and generous with their time, communication and ripe fruits from their orchard. And the four-legged host Lilly was professionally enthusiastic in welcoming each of us. We look forward to our next visit!

I have only great things to say about our stay! Bob and Kady are great hosts that greeted us upon arrival and showed us around. They shared fresh fruits with us and checked in to ask about our stay. While they do live on the property, we felt like we had privacy, while still enjoying their friendliness (especially Lilly’s 😊). The cottage had everything we could have possibly needed and more. One of our favorite touches was a little cooler that made our farmers market trips and long days of exploration that much better! Thanks for the great stay, if we are ever back in the area we will definitely look to stay here again.

Amazing experience even before we got out of our car. Resident dog Lily greeted us as soon as we arrived, followed by the owner Bob who shared his freshly picked lemons with us. He was so friendly and made us feel so welcomed.
The cottage was immaculate, cozy and spacious. They even provided a small cooler, which came in so handy when we went to the farmer’s market. The property was peaceful and tranquil. We loved it soooo much, we plan on staying there in the future, rather than a hotel.
Some of the highlights were waking up to the chirping of the birds, the occasional misty rain and the stargazing. Not to mention the fragrant smell of the Puakenikeni tree right outside of our bedroom. Walking around the Orchard (with Lily) was such a stress reliever.
Perfect location for anyone planning a “book action.” Or just to relax and re-energize.

This beautiful cottage on a working farm is "off the beaten path" but worth the drive. Ocean views are available from the property but not from within the cottage or lanai except through 2 small high windows in the lanai. It is immaculately clean and spacious for two people. The kitchen is well equipped. The owner was very accommodating and helpful. Unfortunately when we were there only limes were available for sharing from the orchard. It’s a great location close to Hilo and great hiking, waterfalls & markets. The owner’s dog, Lilly, is great fun. We stayed for four days as a relaxing end to our busy vacation.
The cottage has perimeter fencing that extends around the lanai to provide privacy and it is "cute". Overhead, the lanai is covered with lattice boards that do not protect from getting wet when raining. So, when it rains, the only place to relax is inside the cottage. The lovely views of the property and the ocean beyond are only visible from the interior when standing at the high kitchen or bathroom windows. The full glass double sliding door has a view of the trash cans and grill with solid fencing behind. We enjoyed our stay in this cottage but we felt claustrophobic when relaxing inside during daily rains. Unless one is standing, there is no view from this lovely cottage. We took lanai chairs out to the lawn area to enjoy views when it was not raining. To do this we had to go outside to unlock the laina door as it latched from the outside. We would stay again for an overnight but not with plans to relax and enjoy the view.

A Great Couples Cottage
We loved the orchard. The cottage was cozy and comfortable. The pineapple and lemons were a nice touch. We would stay again.

Hawaiian getaway
My wife and I had a wonderful time with Bob and Cady! Cady gave us the most delicious pineapple I’ve ever eaten, and Bob responded immediately to a couple of minor issues. The cottage is lovely and perfect for two! Hilo is twenty minutes away, and Akaka Falls is right across the highway. A terrific location for exploring the east side!

Peaceful, quiet, relaxing, beautiful property
This property is so beautiful! Bob and Kady are wonderful, kind, welcoming people. They are living the dream. Their property is tranquil, and fun to explore. The cottage is clean, and my favorite room is the shower. 😄 Their dog, Lily, is fun to play with and welcomes your affection. I would totally stay here again!

Superb get away cottage for couples.
Bob and Kady have created on their property a wonderful retreat for couples. The rural setting overlooking the orchards and Pacific Coast with Mauna Loa behind you is incredibly peaceful and quite. The cottage is immaculate and comfortable. Bob and Kady's infectious warmth and Lilly's attention make you relax immediately upon arrival.

Wonderful
Serene and beautiful with birds in the trees and a pretty little gecko on the patio fence. The cottage looks brand new, though it isn’t, and is cleanest we’ve ever stayed in. Hosts are terrific, including Lily the dog. Five star recommended.

My wife and I were on Big Island for 3 nights and were happy that we picked Bob and Kady's cottage to stay at!
When we arrived, Bob greeted us and gave us the lowdown on what-was-where in the house. This included a guide book that he recommended and a packet of materials they had prepared including local recommendations for sightseeing and dining. The recommendations came in handy as our Maneu Kea stargazing tour was canceled at last minute due to weather, so we used it to build our own itinerary-on-the-go. Some of their orchard fruits were out of season or not yet ripe, but soon after our arrival, they provided us with lemon, lime, and a bag of lychee nuts from their orchard. They also gave us tips on the best days for the farmer’s market (it was Weds and Saturday).
The cottage itself was cozy and clean. The kitchen has a full-size fridge and the cabinets are stocked with essentials to cook with, and we grilled some fish out on the gas grill on the patio while we were there. The shower is spacious. There isn't A/C in the cottage, so keep that in mind depending on time of year. (Everything is correct in the listing, but we didn’t expect the weather to be quite so warm while we were there.) At night it got a bit too warm for us personally, but we kept the windows open and the fans running, which was generally fine. The hosts warned us, careful with lights at night which can attract insects. The birds also start chirping nice and early. We were up with the sunrise (which was beautiful!), so this was fine for us, but if you like to sleep in, just something to be aware of. The dog is very friendly and will greet you on arrival.
As for the grounds themselves, they were quite lovely and located off the beaten path while being convenient to Hilo town (a car is a must for this house). We had a couple of early morning walks around the grounds and down to the stream, and we saw all sorts of birds and fruit trees (like an avocado tree – a first for us). Driving back to the cottage offers a great view of the ocean, which is a nice feeling coming back for the day.
We had jam-packed our schedule, so had to leave in a bit of a rush, but Bob and Kady came to say farewell and make sure we were happy with our stay. We didn't have any issues while we were there, but I they seemed very ready to help us if we did!

Our 10 day stay at Bob and Kady’s cottage could not have been more pleasant. Their 6 acre orchard with their home and the cottage was quiet, relaxing and very pleasant. They were excellent hosts, sharing the fruits and eggs from the orchard and making sure we had all we needed. Everything in the cottage was clean and well kept. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay there. It was a great place to spend a relaxing vacation.

This was the first stop on my wife’s and my marriage and honeymoon tour, a gorgeous cottage with ocean views on Bob and Kady’s fruit farm. They and their dog Lily were extremely friendly but also respected privacy. We originally booked the property for a week, and at one point planned to hold our very small wedding on the property. Later we decided to break the trip into smaller pieces, shorten our stay on the east side and hold the wedding at a nearby botanical garden. Bob and Kady happily accommodated every version of our plan; Kady even helped my wife with her makeup the morning of our wedding. These two exude loving energy, and have a genuine interest in their guests’ stories. The property is great, and we are fortunate to have met Bob and Kady, friendly characters in the story of our wedding for years to come. We would not stay anywhere else in the Hilo area.
