This duplex is located on a safe, charming street 2 blocks from Lake Merritt, and 10 minutes to Bart, Oakland Museum of California and all the shops on Grand Ave and Lakeshore (Safeway, Trader Joes, CVS, Peets, and many more). Visit the Oakland Spice Shop and cook in our fully equipped kitchen with high-end appliances or step outside to all the amazing restaurants that surround the lake. Walk to Bart or rent a FORD GOBIKE or Scooter (LIME & BIRD) available throughout the lake. Off street parking is available for your rental or pick up Zip Car from several locations around the lake. Bosch washer/dryer available in the unit with baby-clean feature. This unit is on a second floor so there are 16 stairs to a private flat. All dark bamboo floors with wonderful space rugs throughout. Wine fridge available for the perfect temperature next to a build-in desk for all those working in or attending conferences in SF, Oakland or vacationing. This was the second time we stayed at this home which may be all you need to know. It's clean with plenty of room to spread out and most of the conveniences one would expect. It's close (walking distance of about a 1/2 mile with a steep return climb) to shopping and dining areas and to public transportation should you choose not to use a car to get around. Carlos and his family are very warm and welcoming, and it was good to know that they were there just in case (but there were no problems, happily). We highly recommend this rental and hope to stay there again when we next visit Oakland.

Carlos's Oakland property is a lovely oasis of peace and comfort. We felt instantly at home. Light- filled and spacious, this second floor flat is decorated in beautiful style with interesting collections of books, artwork, and curios. Very clean, well-appointed, and safe, and the listing photos show it very well - the reality surpassed our expectations. A perfect home-base to explore SF and the Bay area, with walking-distance to Oakland grocery, restos, and shops. We had such a nice family holiday and I hope to be back sooner rather than later. My husband, 16 year-old son and I had a wonderful time at Carlos' place. The apartment was very clean and comfortable. We loved the artwork and the proximity to Lake Merritt. When the smaller bedroom got too hot due to an increase in temperature, we requested a fan and Carlos provided one right way. Communication with him was seamless. We highly recommend this apartment.

The property is as advertised but the pictures don't do it justice. The unit is a second floor duplex with a locked private entrance that is totally separated from the downstairs unit where the owner lives. We never heard a peep from folks below us. It was quiet, peaceful, and beautiful. Carlos has filled this lovely unit with art he's collected over the years. It's interesting, whimsical, and delightful. It's an older house with modern bathroom, kitchen, and flooring.
The unit is well-appointed with amenities to meet your needs. There are games, CDs, a Roku TV, all the kitchen goodies, etc.
The neighborhood is safe and very near restaurants, shops, a vintage movie palace (the Grand Lake Theater), and a great urban park (Lake Merritt). It's convenient by highway to S.F. and the Bay Area.
Our only quibble -- and involves a purely a personal and subjective matter of preference -- is the bed in the master bedroom was a bit too firm for our taste.
We would recommend this great unit without reservation, and with our full endorsement. We'd go back there in a heartbeat if time and circumstances allow.

We needed a place to stay in Oakland for 12 days, and are so glad we found Carlos’s fantastic place. Super cozy, charming and comfortable, it was perfect for us. It’s full of character and personal touches, and feels very much like a home instead of a rental. Bed was comfortable, bathroom was modern and functional, closet was great, kitchen was well supplied and easy to use, and the two different living room spaces really helped us spread out. There is lots of artwork and some funky antiques too. Most of all, Carlos was an amazing host and a true gentleman. Loved the neighborhood too. We’d stay there again in a second!

My wife, my daughter and I stayed here for four nights, and loved every minute of our stay! The house is very clean and comfortable, and the windows let in a lot of fresh air. The kitchen was well-stocked with pots, pans and utensils- so if you are planning on staying a while, you will be able to cook your own meals, if you desire.
Carlos was very friendly and welcoming- one evening he showed us around the yard and we talked about the history of the house, and the work he had put into it. It's clear by how clean and well-maintained the place is, that he really cares about the place, and sees it as more than a rental property.
If we are ever out this way again, we will definitely try to book here again.

We loved staying here so much that after one day, my son would talk about it as "home." It feels a bit like a treehouse, being on the second floor with trees all around. The sheets are soft, the bathroom is beautiful, there is a ton of space (much more than I expected -- two living rooms), it smelled lovely, and so many windows to keep open to enjoy the Bay Area weather. It is decorated in a way that feels warm and really like a home -- with so many interesting and beautiful things to look at -- and everything in its place at the same time. There are games for lots and lots of information about the local area. The garden in the front is gorgeous. On the practical side, check in and check out was super easy, the washing machine and dryer worked great, the kitchen is big and well equipped, and it is meticulous. I feel so lucky we got to stay here and hope to return in the not too distant future. Thank you, Carlos!

This is the nicest Vrbo we have ever stayed at. The location was ideal with an easy walk to Lake Merritt. I can’t say enough about how nice the apartment was. Quirky & Colorful Lake Merritt Duplex Upper
We had a great stay at Carlos’s place in a wonderful location in Oakland. Walked to farmers market, shops, cafes, the Lake. The place itself has everything you could need and plenty of fun and interesting decor. Communication was easy and there’s a pair of sweet cats who will greet you on the front porch. Definitely recommend.

Excellent visit in an Eclectic Environment
We couldn't have picked a better setting for our visit. Two large Balinese statues flank the entrance and as we have lived in Asia, we immediately engaged with the property. Lots of interesting bits and pieces from around the world add warmth. Our favorite spot was the window seat that overlooks a backyard of delight and you will believe that you have travelled far away from a city and perhaps even to another country. A parking spot as well with convenience to freeway, Lake Merritt, and food and wine shopping. We would stay again and as we were visiting our daughter who lives a few blocks away, it is highly likely we will. Thank you Carlos for creating a engaging and eclectic environment.

We came west to celebrate a family holiday. This place could not have been more perfect. It had the best outfitted kitchen I have ever encountered at a vacation rental. It was comfortable, spacious, tasteful, and convenient. The whole process was seamless.
