"Prefab-ulous: Gunnison houses were sturdy, affordable and went up in a wink." Who put the magic in Gunnison Magichomes? That was Foster Gunnison, the man who wanted to do for the American home what Henry Ford did for the automobile. And what was the magic? "If you had your foundation in place, you could start [construction] Tuesday morning and the family could eat dinner on Friday evening in their home," said Randy Shipp, a Lexington, Ky., City Historic Preservation Specialist who's been researching Gunnison Homes for about four years. In the early 1930s, Mr. Gunnison, a lighting engineer who illuminated the Empire State Building and Rockefeller Center, worked with a group of architects, engineers and plywood experts to develop affordable housing using assembly-line techniques. The one-story houses could be put together on their sites from ready-made components, including walls that already contained steel casement windows and wooden doors. Gunnison homes were a hit because they were moderately priced, well-built and, thanks to a variety of add-on features, could be custom-made to accommodate families of different sizes and means. In 1961, Mr. Gunnison's New York Times Obituary called his product "the first commercially successful mass-produced home in the United States." Marketed through franchised dealers across the country, Gunnisons by 1950 came in 11 sizes, from a boxy 24-by-24-foot model with kitchen, living-dining room, two bedrooms, bath and utility room to a spacious four-bedroom, 2 1/2-bath model. All had built-in bedroom closets and linen closets. Traditional styles -- Cape Cod, Colonial and Ranch -- were chosen to boost consumer confidence in the novel prefab building method. Mr. Gunnison, son of the publisher of the Brooklyn Daily Eagle, established his company in 1935 in New Albany, Ind., a suburb of Louisville, Ky., on the opposite side of the Ohio River. "New Albany had a good central location, access to a good supply of materials, and the building had been a wood veneer factory," so it already had some of the necessary equipment, Mr. Shipp said.

Perfect location for Lexington activities.
The house was neat and very clean. The owner responded quickly to text messages. I know it's not mentioned in the description, but the outside back patio could be a great place to relax and enjoy the day before or after busy activities. Just a thought!

I stayed here with my fiancé and friend. This house served as a perfect home base for us while enjoying Lexington for a few days. The neighborhood is peaceful, and the house was very clean and welcoming when we arrived. The beds were super comfortable as well, which can be hard to find when traveling.

Good location in quiet neighborhood
Quaint home with everything you need. Comfortable beds and clean throughout! Our only disappointment was the patio furniture was so old and dirty we could not use. Such a shame for the weather was perfect to do so. Otherwise… great find!

quick Lexington trip
The home was just as advertised and very clean. The only negative was the condition of the back yard and patio. The grass was not cut and the lawn furniture was not cleaned. Neighbors were friendly and we felt comfortable and safe.

This is bar none the best home I have rented in Lexington. It is close to the university Kentucky where my daughter graduated, as well as proximity to other parts of Lexington where my family lives. The backyard was great for the kids to hang out when they came to visit. I have no suggestions of any changes that could have made this a better experience. I certainly will rent this property every time I come to Lexington to see my family.

The cottage was simply adorable. The kitchen was fully stocked with all the utensils we could possibly need to cook a good meal.
Great hot water, nice furnishings and a good bed, what more could you ask for?! The entire house was very clean, it felt very safe in these times
The backyard was great for Squirt and the neighbours were all super friendly.
Michelle and Faron were perfect. With all the covid ups and downs they were completely professional when our trip had to be cut short.

Perfect spot for us
Comfortable beds, laundry facilities and a kitchen were much better than what we would have gotten at a hotel for the same price. We had private spaces and room to have another people over to visit. The proximity to restaurants, grocery store and attractions made this house very convenient.

Nice place
My dad and I stayed here for the Kentucky Derby. We had about an hour and 15 minute drive to Louisville each day which wasn't bad. The place was nice and clean. Beds were comfortable. The owner is very particular about you checking in with her which is something we have never encountered with any of our previous rentals. I think she might have had a way to control the HVAC settings as well because when we would come in at night the settings would be different than where we had left it which was very peculiar. Overall a nice quaint place. Quiet neighborhood as well.

Very nice, comfortable, and well stocked house
I've been to a few rental houses now(I'll never stay in a hotel anymore) and this one really impressed me! Nice neighborhood location that's easy to get to off the interstate. Very clean, and they have gone over and beyond supplying misc bathroom supplies and condiments; even some bottled water. There was plenty of cleaning supplies and laundry supplies. No cable or satellite, just rabbit ears, but they do have Roku which makes up for it. Maybe the only drawback is the living room furniture. It consists of a sofa, club chair, and rocking chair that is outdoor wicker patio furniture. It's comfy at first but by the time you watch a movie your uncomfortable. The owners are easily accessible and friendly. I'm definitely considering this again for my stay in Lexington later this year. The only reason I'd not rent this house again depends on the number of people coming down with me. 3 people is perfect, four is stretching it, and 5 would be to many and there could be 5 of us. Huge kudos to the renters... They are awesome people!

This property is exactly as advertised. It is squeaky clean and comfortable. The owners are extraordinarily accommodating and responsive. They have furnished the house with all the essentials needed fior cooking and the appliances are state of the art. We appreciated the extra unexpected amenities like bottled water, furnished condiments and all the extras. We actually overpacked for the trip. All you need is your food and personal items.
