The room and bathroom were a little small but the location could not be beat. Beautiful area.

We loved this beautiful area of the country. We loved the lodge. Our room was tiny, but, really, it was all we needed. We would definitely go back. And it was near to many sights to see.

We attended a wedding on this property and we had higher expectations for the hotel considering the high price. The area is beautiful and the staff is very friendly and attentive. The price is exorbitant considering the condition of the hotel and the tv's have limited channels and were NOT High Definition, just like the old days. The food in the dining room was not worth the price tag.

The restaurant was winding down for the season so the servers were actually housekeeping staff and they were out of most of the wines that we wanted.

Amazing place to stay with views from every angle. The rooms was beautiful and just redone. The restaurant dinner was delicious!! We will definitely come back. Simply 5+++Stars in our opinion.

Superb location. The dining room was not good and very expensive. The dining room and bar closed at 8 pm which is ridiculous. The room had no headboards and only one nightstand between the beds. No reading lights either. For a place that charges a premium amount for everything they didn’t come through. That said it’s a beautiful area and the hiking trails are great.

The living room was charming with an outdoor motif and the dining room had large windows with magnificent views.

I liked that this felt nostalgic staying at a state lodge versus a chain. And the proximity to Sylvan Lake and Custer State Park couldn't be beat!
The onsite restaurant and bar we very nice. (The S'More martini was especially good!)
My wife prefers a bathroom with more counter space, but if that is worst you can say about a property like this, you're living pretty good. (The shower did take a little time to warm up, but once it did it was wonderful and stayed hot the entire time.)

Issue was that after a day HiFi g we went back to room to shower. We could not get shower to work. We ended up with two staff ( desk person and someone who was a ‘maintenance’ worker) come in. They could not get shower to work. I called multiple times. Was misdirect3d multiple times. Finally manager called back and said shower worked. It did not.

Everything was clean and comfortable and there was plenty of outdoor space to enjoy. We especially enjoyed watching the bison herd right below our patio in the morning. It's not really the hotel's fault but the large groups of people smoking everywhere we went were quite off-putting and the noisy group of people smoking cigars and drinking whiskey on the deck at the lobby entrance were not exactly the best first impression the hotel can offer. Otherwise I think I would have given this a perfect rating. So take it with a grain of salt that I did not. I'm pretty sure they won't be there when you check in. ;)

For the pros, lodge is set in the hills and feels remote. Cons, front desk staff was rude, door to the room was very difficult to open, found dirty socks in the room from the prior guest, shower made a horrible screeching noise when running, and wifi is super slow.

Wonderful resort with a historic feel and story. Beautiful area!!

Beautiful property with great views of the mountains. Rooms were small and not a lot of parking in the front. The over-flow parking was a challenge for my husband to walk back from, since it was down the hill. Staff was very nice.

I felt like I was staying at the lodge from Dirty Dancing. Straight out of the 1950s. My room was very small. It was clean. I dont know that I would stay here again. Its a good place if you want to be close to the park.

The property was clean, remote and staff were great.
Room 223 had a view, straight down, of dirt but to the right on the balcony it was great.
Parking spots are limited but can park along the road.
Limited times for meals. Probably better to make reservations the day before. (We arrived at 7:30pm ish and no more reservations being taken for dinner. 7:30 am. No coffee until breakfast at 8.)
One dinner, on site, and it was great.

Sylvan Lake Lodge is a jewel property in Custer State Park located in one of the most beautiful areas of the Black Hills. However, it is in need of some tender loving care. Dining was excellent. Property was definitely understaffed but available staff was friendly & helpful. Grounds & property including rooms, however, looked tired & in need of maintenance.

The lake and area around it is beautiful. The cabin was small, and the bathroom was like a closet. They never cleaned our cabin (even though we requested it twice), and they did not provide enough toilet paper or towels or toiletries for our length of stay. The breakfast was very limited and poorly organized. They seemed to be short staffed and poorly managed. We were bewildered by the set up of it all (nothing was placed in an order that made sense). The plates and silverware where near the end, and the toaster wasn't really working properly. While this alone isn't a deal breaker, it felt like they were operating on a shoe string budget and withholding all the little things that make staying away from home fun. If you book a room/cabin here, then make sure you bring all of your own supplies (right on down to the towels and toilet paper), and plan to go elsewhere for all your meals.

Loved staying at Sylvan Lake Resort. Staff shortage didn’t stop those working from going above and beyond for the guests.
Thanks and we will be back.

Absolutely beautiful property. We stayed in the lodge and our family stayed in cabins. Beautiful views, fun to get to (switchback roads), nice hotel, beautiful cabins. A bit more work on the breakfast...serve coffee at 6:30 or 7am, make sure there is enough milk to go around at breakfast (ran out of milk), ample plates, etc. Given we visited post-COVID I'm sure it was a challenge getting all the food, help, etc. at the resort. All in all, a beautiful experience. Kudos to Brook and Sydney for helping us to make this a very memorable stay. All our best, your visitors

The two young ladies at chick in were wonderful. Thankful for their ministry. They are placed in national/state parks each summer to help do church service and were so nice. The hotel was very clean. The lodge rooms are extremely small. And there was minimal hot water.

Still not full-service because of COVID restrictions, but the staff was great, the rooms were spacious and the location was perfect for Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse and Custer/Custer State Park touring.

Very old and dated. Severely understaffed. Dining is a joke (no fault of servers). Uneducated check in staff. Little parking. Morning still had evening dishes/glasses uncleared from tables.

Beautiful 100 year old lodge. Repairs and updates seemed to be taking place during our stay. It's hard to say this but if they were able to thin out some of the trees to allow views of Sylvan Lake, it would be great.

It was overall good but they were renovating the place so it was messy. It is an old building so the floor creaks and door was tough opening and closing. Overall the view was beautiful.

The location was perfect the lodge is beautiful staff was great. The room was small and the heater would overheat the room
